  • Remember way back, in The Before Times, when Irene said she wanted to try gouache? It feels like forever ago, but she finally got her hands on a set of Holbein Artists’ Gouache. Not only that, but she demonstrates it here while sharing what she knows about this new-to-her medium.

Hey Irene! Glad to see you're exploring gouache! I've been doing the same recently. The tube size isn't such a big deal for the colors, especially the ones that don't already have white mixed in, they last forever, and you'll go through the white the fastest. For brushes, I've been REALLY enjoying the Creative Mark Polar Flo brushes, they give you a nice point but they're synthetic so a bit heartier. I've found it difficult to get a nice point with gouache but the Polar Flo's do a great job. Still soft though, I use them for watercolor too sometimes actually. Also, one vote for M Graham instead of Holbein if you want to dry your gouache. All gouache will eventually rewet, but M Graham rewets within minutes for me, Holbein and Winsor & Newton take a lot longer to soak up the water and can be "chunky". Both of the latter have a much wider variety of convenience colors though, so it depends on your priorities. I dry my M Graham in a semi-airtight palette with plastic wells (the silver and green 16 well on amazon, you can get a set of 2 for $10) and only use my Holbein from the tube. It works out ok. The airtight palette keeps it wet for a couple of days give or take, and I use a sta-wet palette for acrylic gouache. Sorry for the information vomit, I can't help myself!

Also FWIW the jelly gouache is also in my regrets bin. Mostly because I HATE contaminating my colors and without having a fresh tube to refill them, it just irritated my OCD way too much.

I'll look into the Creative Mark Polar Flo brushes. Seems like the next item I get should be a big tube of white. LOL. Do you think 'Titanium White' is the best option? I appreciate all the info and tips, Sarah - thanks!

@@INCWorks I personally like titanium white but really serious gouache artists will use zinc white for transparent tinting and titanium white for opaque tinting... or something like that. if you search for the words "which white gouache RozWoundUp" you'll find an excellent summary of each and how to use them. Roz is a great resource!

5ml tubes are so adorable, and I think you'll get a good lot of use out of them before they run out. This is a good starter set of colours, and I am sure you know how much I like Holbein gouache, haha! Gouache works well on many papers, including cellulose and it's more forgiving than watercolours. I love them on toned paper as well! When painted more thickly, lightfastness isn't such an issue. I hope you enjoy your lovely new paints! ❤ P.S: I remember what it is like being so close to 1000 subs and impatiently waiting for it to click over! I'll happen soon, I'm sure!

More please, lol! Admittedly, I had to go look up who Edward Hopper was. If it saves the universe, I say go for it! This gouache looks really nice. I hope you reach 1,000 subscribers by the end of the month - that would be so exciting!

Hello! 😀Since this video, I've tried M. Graham, Da Vinci, and Caran d'Ache. But Holbein is my favorite gouache. I've always been curious about Himi, though, and have seen some TH-camrs make lovely art with it.

I would love to have this brand and enjoyed the swatching. I am trying Chalkola gouache next week. Gouache is a very nice medium and I find it perfect blend between acrylics and oils or acrylics and watercolors.

    • @INCWorks

I kept waffling over which brand to go with (too many choices out there) that's one reason why it took me so long to finally try some. I wanna see that Chalkola video - I'll keep my eyes peeled.

wow you weren't kidding, these paints are so pigmented 🤯
yeah I hear you about the jelly gouache. I bought a himi gouache set during the beginning of the pandemmy for my dad and me to have something to do together and we just always felt like we were waiting to be able to upgrade to the next best thing. don't get me wrong, the colors packed a punch and all, especially the prussian blue, but I just felt like having to dip into those little cups was a less fun and less controlled experience than being able to squeeze paint straight from a tube.
also amen to making tall people reach stuff for short people. last year I was working as a grocery order pickup runner and my 5'3 ass cannot reach anything on the top shelf. I am too short for that job. 😔

That's a cool idea - having a small 'paint party' at home. But I can imagine it leading to conflict... 'Hey! Who got ultramarine in the lemon yellow??' LOL. Honestly, I'm not always so pessimistic. 😄

Gouache lasts a long time, you don't need a lot. Less than watercolor but not bad, Its actually better for softer brushes with gouache it blends better. Iv heard all opposite of what you said, gouache is also better to use fresh but even when dried you are supposed to let water soften it so not sure what you mean by scrubbing it, you shouldn't be scrubbing anything with gouache.

If you buy the 18 set of the jelly gouache, all but the violet and slightly the rose are light fast. Same with the Holbein. That pretty Holbein violet is gone in few months of sun. Gouache isn't intended to be light fast....although Daniel Smith has gouache in the works that will be.

How long will this 5ml tube last?

    • @INCWorks
      @INCWorks  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you are a gouache painter, I recommend sets that have full 15m tubes. These smaller 5m tubes worked for me at the time because I wasn't sure if this medium was for me. So, it was a good way to try gouache without fully committing. I'm not a prolific painter and still have some of this paint left even two years later. But that's probably due to the fact that I split my work over several different mediums plus a couple of other large Holbein gouache sets. Someone who paints with gouache more often would likely used this 5m set up quickly.

If you want the best gouache at the most inexpensive prices but Chinese watercolors. They are 100% opaque straight out of the tube without white added to them. Chinese professional watercolor paint is more largely ground than western pigments because they are meant to be used in non sized paper. I get that TH-cam doesn't promote this knowledge because they can't get the product for free, but there it is. If one wants a high quality, highly pigmented, matte, easily controlled gouache by Eastern professional watercolor. Preferably Chinese. These holbein are easy to expensive and they are not opaque at all.

    I have holbein and himi/miya.
I love the himi/miya they are amazing and fun and so inexpensive i can paitn as much as I want with no worries.
You can take out using a pallet knife and use from another pallet.
The holbein are only 1.5 to 3 times better (at most). Personally I think its just 1.5 times better. Yet where I live its litterally more than eleven times the price!
    Basic math.
I rarely use the holbein as its 'too precious' Although I force myself to sometimes anyway.
The himi/miya is amazing in my personal opinion and WAY more worth the price!
If investing in Holbein gouache you can go after lightfast colours if preferred.
Some of the himi/miya have passed my one year window lightfastness test actually while others are fugitive.
I have been enjoying using fugitive colours anyway as they can be very inspiring.
Lightfast is recommended for originals for sale but you can still use fugitive with clear warnings to customers.
