I live in Washington State, and have used Arteza gouache in a mijello palette for a couple years now. It hasn't molded on me, fortunately. The mijello is the best palette for gouache, imo, and I use a mini spray bottle to keep the paints usable. This works great if you paint often and want them ready to go. I just have to store the palette flat so the paints don't run. Sometimes for my jelly gouache (especially when storing them) I add a little bit of hand sanitizer to the squirt bottle water and shake it up before I spray them to prevent the jellies from molding. I spray water as I work, and I spray water/sanitizer before storage. I "decant" the jellies into a mijello palette as well. But again, I haven't experienced molding myself. Arteza is a great gouache to start with. I prefer it for daily practice for sure. Love your videos, they always seem to inspire me. Thank you!
I love Arteza gouache.I'm more into watercolor and since I don't want to spend too much on gouache this brand is very good for playing and experimenting only.
i haven't tried the arteza gouache yet, but i've been having great results adding a bit of propylene glycol (supposedly the main ingredient in windsor&newton blending medium) to help with rewettability in pans and easier spread. it's a great tip from lena rivo that it doesn't make paints as sticky as glycerin or honey - and i've found cheaper paints tend to be stickier and harder to spread out, so this really helps. if you are teaching a class it could be handy to get a larger bottle from amazon, it's much cheaper than the w&n blending medium.
The class sounds like it's going to be really fun! I'm sure the gouache will be fine, and like you say they can always purchase more expensive tubes over time. The Arteza set seems like a decent one to start out with, and the painting you did looks lovely! That purpley colour is really pretty. 💜
Ruth Wilshaw and James Gurney. Great for learning gouache! Just mentioning them in case anyone looks in the comments for more ideas. I like the Arteza gouache better than the himi gouache, for sure!! But yeah, definitely not pro gouache
How cool about the class, sounds fun! I'm glad you're trying the entry level gouache so the people can judge it. I love the idea of building up more expensive gouache color by color after figuring out which ones you use most. Awesome painting as always!
My first class was yesterday and we had a lot of fun. I think this gouache will be just fine. I really do hope they'll replace their tubes with the more expensive stuff as they go, though. I think it'd be a fun comparison for them!
i can't wait until i get into gouache~ it looks like such a fun medium! i got a small set of w&n ready but i'm just not ready yet lol. ---wahhh! i love the pink top part at --12:47--!!!! --- waah! ur recreation is so accurate! i need to rewatch this XD
Excellent paintings ! Love the colours. I have enough gouaches paints and would go to professionals when I need replacing them. Have a great week, Miranda with the 4legged goofball
Enjoyed the video. Really like the Arches scene. I got curious. I am horrible with my gouches. Checked my Holbein paints in a Mijello pallette. Been MONTHS, they're dry but not flakey. I rally wish I had more time to play with my gouache paints. They have been calling out to me lately. Have fun with your class.
I did stir t them with Windsor Newton medium. They looked good but didn't use them. Whenever I check my airtight palette, I'll use a vinegar and distilled water mix if they need stirring.
Hi Miranda! I was gifted some Arteza gouache and love it! Nice colors, nice opacity. I don't save it session to session, just squeeze out a small bit each time. Your students are blessed to have such a wonderful instructor !!!! Oh what a shame that gradient paper got splashed! Your desert landscape came out great!
The Arteza is the least lightfast gouache of the Miya-Arteza realm. However, it's not bad gouache at all to use. But warn them on the lightfastness (Kimberly Crick test). Some of the pinks and yellows will completely disappear. And Miya rewets more easily. I love those Mijello palettes so much, own three, wish I had more. I subscribed to that LMA kit too. I found that even the DS gouaches quickly got muddy on the arch in this painting, so I'm now forging ahead in your video to see how the Areza did. Update: Ahhh, we mixed our browns, you're using convenience browns. Definitely makes a difference. You did the painting very differently from the tutorial process, but I almost like yours better! Nice job.
A couple more gouache channels to recommend @RuthWilshaw She has only a few tutorials on You Tube but they're great. @sandraruberto8806 who mostly gives demonstrations but makes amazing watercolor paintings.
Ty for sharing this with us. I love the final picture, it's gorgeous. I'd definitely enjoy more gouache videos but my true love is watercolors. Have a great day
Love Jess Chung for gouache! And Sarah Cray's national parks gogh Gouache box with let's make art is so well done! It was really fun! They still have the digital edition available on their website and have been having great sales of anyone swooned over that box like I did when she first released it!
The timing on this video is downright spooky. I told you Denise's Opacity palette has "rurnt" (redneck for ruined) me. I've been looking at gouache & watching Sarah for weeks. Arteza has q 12 tube set also. Sounds like the perfect place for me to start. Thank you so much for this video!
I had decent luck with Arteza gouache, but my favorite affordable option is the Caran d'Ache pan gouache. It's an absolute joy to use! I saw a video indicating that the studio gouache and the fancolor were possibly the same, so I went with the fancolor option since it was cheaper at the time, and it's worked out great.
Hi Miranda, ive got these guache and its lovely and covers well, I tried it in A pan and it was horrible, it cracked and broke up something terrible. I then tried one pan where I mixed a tiny bit of honey in and bingo!!! It rewets great and is lovely, I hated guache when I tried it a couple years ago, couldnt see the point and didnt really know how to use it, I kept going back to it and NOW im obsessed love it so much, Im doing an A4 book of birds and paint everyday and am REALLY enjoying it!!!
@@MirandaWatsonArt it was just runny honey I had in the cupboard worked a treat, put a bit on a cocktail stick and stirred it in, I think any honey would do
I've had arteza gouache in a stay wet palette for over two years now and I can assure that they didn't grow mold at all 👌🏼 when I first bought them I was struggling with gouache in addition to being very sick so I didn't enjoy painting with them very much and I abandoned them 😅😅😅 but a year ago I started gouache again with himi miya tube gouache and I loved it so I'll give arteza another chance in the future! But mine didn't crumble at all, so hopefully that diffrence doesn't affect it's moldness 😅 I just adore the way you painted the clouds 😍
Thank you for the video Miranda. I’d love to see some more gouache studies on the channel. I’m very interested in learning gouache as well as watercolor. The arch painting turned out just lovely too btw. 😊
I love arteza guache the best for a student grade paint, but its not meant to be dried out in pans.its designed to be used fresh from the tube, and cracks if dried ,it does rewet well though it will crumble if dried. I only use mine fresh and occasionally rewet only whats on my palette from what i hadn't used originally. Wouldn't recommend drying larger pans worth.
Great video. Would love to see the last painting done again in one of your favorite gouache for that comparison. What is the block you did the last painting on?
Hi Miranda i have a mini palette of dried arteza gouache, they dry fairly quickly but i gave it two days to ensure they're fully dry. the re-wet really but my ultramarine and some of my browns crumble a lot. No mold thankfully.
Compared to watercolors, there seems to be fewer brands that deal with gouache, no? So, although I'm not familiar with Arteza's products, your demonstrations were enlightening and a delight to watch.
its an ok beginner gouache and easy enough to get with a bit of time to order, and it will give the students and idea if they will like gouache or not and then buy more expensive paint 🙂
I always thought that the Arteza gouache was a pretty good student gouache. I wonder how I would like it now after playing with the good stuff for a while? Hehe. Your painting turned out great. Have fun with your students.
Miranda have you tried Winsor and Newton gouache yet? I like it a little more than Holbein. I only have primary colors for Holbein and W&N, but they are so nice, I can mix anything with the primaries.
Thank you for doing this review. Do you know where I could buy an empty palette ( the ones that are used by HIMI/ Miya)? I would like to buy the 60 arteza set, but only have the arteza 24 set in the tackle box style palette. I love the Arteza gouache. I tried my art scape and Niji and were disappointed by both.

I have also enjoyed the Caran d'ache pan gouache. It's not as opaque without adding a white but still pretty. I LOVE the maintenance free aspect.
It does look intriguing..
Yes, maintenance-free would be nice!

Hi, Maggie! I have them in my drawer, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet. I'm really wanting to get to them soon though!
Arteza is definitely studio quality. I have both pro and student. I can use a pea size amount of pro paint to half a tube of arteza. But it works...ok
Interesting. I really hope to convince my students to upgrade their tunes as they run out. Fingers crossed 🤞

Local store - would that happen to be in Basalt?
Yep!
I don't find arteza gouache very good when dried down - it all cracks and crumbles and goes everywhere! I would use fresh from the tube 😊
Okay, thank you! I'm going to try an experiment first and if it doesn't work out, then straight from the tube for sure.
i haven't tried the arteza gouache yet i wish I could get any arteza they only sell it in usa i can’t get it in Canada 😢🥺
