      @@GrumpusTheCat I’ll take even a low bar if it is at least trying to be a Trek show. I’ll even accept Trek stealing from itself, which is a grand old Trek tradition. In case everyone missed it, the Khan chick is recycling the Tasha Yar character from TNG. Just add “raped/eaten by Gorn” to the already heinous backstory if roving rape gangs, plus “KHAAAAN!” Yes Uhura is mainly borrowing from Hoshi. But Riker and Troi were just pencilled in name changes from Decker and Ilya.

    If this series takes place prior to Kirk then there are no biological filters on the transporters. There are a couple of episodes in the Original Series were the crew had to either wear protective gear, or could not leave the planet they were on until the illness was cured. The filters were introduced in Next Generation.

      The most troubling aspect is not merely that the officers were not sanctioned, but that their violations were never remanded to Starfleet fir adjudication.
      In the case of the first officer, surely a captain should have some discretion, and nobody would insist on a slavish adherence to rules for their own sake, however the absolute prohibition on augments clearly reflects seriousness in which Starfleet views the issue.
      It should not lie within Pikes discretion to so casually be dismissive of the band merely because his officer is competent-- after all, wouldn't an augment, by definition, be expected to be highly competent and proficient?
      Pike's reasoning is deficient, and does not go to the heart of the issue, namely the policy objectives of the ban, and clearly implies inconsistent and problematic results.
      Suppose for example that the first officer was merely mediocre; would Pike then subject her to listen to disciniplary sanction?
      While new trek seems to advocate for ian "end justifies the mean" type of morality, this should be contrasted to Capt Janeway who formed an alliance with other ships trapped in the void, so long as they maintain a moral code which includes a Prohibition against plundering other ships. When Janeway discovers that one of the ships in her coalition I've actually stolen equipment from another ship, she refuses to cooperate with them unless they return the stolen Goods.
      If Pike was principled, he would have reported the issue to Starfleet, but advocated for his first officer, and also that the prohibition should in general be repealed. But nah, he's okay with selective enforcement of the Starfleet rules for people that he likes

    I hated the doctors daughter reveal... it just opened up too many convenience plotholes for the entire Trek universe.. "Someone's dying? Don't worry! Just stick em in the databanks for a bit..." Hiding a fugitive? Stick em in the banks! Avoiding the missus? Hop on in the banks! ..whereas the whole point of Scotty doing it was a one off, due to him being an engineering GENIUS who used his innovation and creativity to find a clever loophole in a very desperate situation... this kinda just makes a mockery of the idea.. Are people just asleep in there? Dreaming? Floating in digital oblivion? Partying with databots? Swatting up on wikipedia? Just kinda dumb... And no true consequences to it.. What if every time he did it, her code degraded a little... so his time to find a cure was limited? And why didn't he just materialise her so they could update the transporters, then put her back in it? Seems very hypocritical for a DOCTOR to risk so many lives by refusing to upgrade them? Hell, would he even be able to tell them no when they went to do it? The whole thing was just silly to me...

      Thank you for making this point. Heck, nowadays you'd have to be nuts to disregard an anti-virus update, let alone a transporter anti-virus update. _Trek_ has done the idea of storing a person in a pattern buffer multiple times. It's not a new or sense-breaking concept for the show, nor does it take away from Scotty. Scott was a genius for being able to make the procedure last for _decades,_ while the doctor thought it was a forgone conclusion that the person needs to be rematerialized regularly. The concept is the same as a very expensive ICU. You can hide in the closet from your missus too, unless she decides to do a little searching of the house; and just like checking a closet or your text message history on your phone, she could check the transporter logs.
      Don't try to poke holes in the show's ideas if you won't look at poking holes in your own.

Here's why: 1) officers on duty talking with higher ranking officers like they are some Gen Z friends hanging out (or whatever gen Z does), 2) every problem is solved by pure conjecture and making up some macguffins. Remember for example Stellar Cartography on Ent-D? Nu Trek characters don't need that. They just think for a second (if that much) and think of the right solution. 3) transporters can't get a person from orbit to surface with all clothes, but transporting A PIECE OF A PLANET'S CORE THROUGH THE CRUST AND MANTLE (!!!) is no problem, apparently, 4) No.1 and Doc should have been kicked out of Starfleet after Ep.3 or at least face some serious repercussions. But nope, zero accountability.

    I would absolutely agree that the best thing we can say about Strange New Worlds to this point is... "Well, it's not terrible." But when Discovery and Puke-Hard have lowered the bar practically to zero, that isn't exactly high praise. That said, I would remind people that the first season or two of The Next Generation was hardly amazing either. In fact it was overall pretty bad, but similar to Strange New Worlds itself, people were so starved for Trek at that point, that it was easy to put on your "rose colored glasses" and forgive some of the shows shortcomings. Now I'm not saying SNW will hit TNG levels at some point (especially since Kurtzman is still calling the shots) but maybe, just maybe, it will find a decent "footing."

    • @broco1163

      I think the issue is that ST fans view Picard and Disc as stand-ins for the poorly written S1 and S2 of TNG. New Trek has had it's time to get past its growing pains. So the hope is that SNW will hit the ground running, which isn't very fair to it, but it's the reality. When so much bad has happened before your show, your show will be expected to prop up everything from the jump. SNW has been ok so far, but I agree with the video, it's going to need some pop, a great episode pretty soon. Otherwise it's just going to be the milquetoast cherry on the New Trek shit sundae.

      @vancebocas7626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to disagree with you on this one. Encounter at Farpoint, in it's two episode format, was an excellent introduction to TNG. It captured your attention with a great storyline, it offered you tidbits into the different characters and their styles and personalities. It definitely allowed you to be fully immersed in this new "world". You cannot say the same about SNW. Of course, there were misses in the first year, but TNG started strong and definitely had more hits than misses. 3 episodes into SNW, there is none of that. Nothing to catch and keep your attention. More things to make you roll your eyes and say "but...wait" in sheer confusion about the thought processes and storylines. As I said in a previous post, we have got to stop saying "eh it's better than Discovery and Picard" and give it a pass for that. Star Trek can and HAS been better and that should be the standard, period.

If I was a writer I'd get out my 'Stellarium' program and start researching to see what kind of curiosities does space within a certain number of light years offers. Also, read a lot of human history. What kinds of events could translate into an episode. Also, from what stills I've seen they have made this Enterprise absolutely HUGE. They could have kept the dimensions of the original while updating some of the tech. I may buy this series when it comes out on DVD.

They also did something close to that in a couple of DS9 episodes too. And i still won't watch this on its own. I'll rely on your reviews for it. It is so convenient of a trope isn't it, that is all over the place of Star Trek. The only thing with holding a pattern in a buffer is, that it is taking Energy in some way to do so. And any Transporter Inspection beyond some safety weekly check should pick up an above average Energy consumption not only on the Transporter, but also on the Energy management system of the ship, that feeds the transporter "room/s". So yeah. pretty hard to dodge this. I mean a doctor is educated, but he doesn't have a engineering degree let alone a specialization for transporters haven't he? When Scotty do it, it is believable because he basically can dissemble and reassemble the ship from bow to stern eyes closed in a week.

    It’s probably all going to come down to the characters to set this show apart. It’s hard to craft completely original stories at this point when you have a back catalogue of 700+ episodes. If even half the episodes are fairly unique, that’d be a massive accomplishment. So it’s really going to be whether the characters are interesting and relatable and that usually takes a couple seasons to really sort out. Enterprise ended up a pretty good show by the end, but only Trip was really worth anything in the first season. TNG started very slowly with almost everyone being a blank slate until around season 3, Voyager was completely inconsistent in every regard the whole way through, and DS9 had some solid characterization from the start but took several seasons to develop the full cast (looking at you Dr. Bashir). It will be interesting to see if SNW can develop quicker because they almost have to, since there are only ten episodes a season nowadays.

    • @infinitelybanta
      @infinitelybanta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheAnarchist01 I always liked Enterprise too, the concept of the early years of deep space exploration appealed to me, but when I rewatched it recently, I was taken back by how little they did with the characters initially. Or in Archer’s case, how much he matured. At the beginning, they lean hard into “the Vulcans are holding humanity back” and it really makes Archer come off as an emotional child. I can I understand his frustration and how they wanted to really show the difference between the two species, but trying to establish it quickly I think they made Archer act way over the top. He comes off as a guy with a quick temper and sort of makes made me understand the Vulcans’ position, which I don’t think is what they wanted to convey. By the second season, Archer is greatly toned down and that allows T’Pol to be less of a caricature of a Vulcan (sort of the same problem Tuvok had on Voyager) and it made the character interactions feel less forced.
      Enterprise may have actually had my favorite crew (sort of a tossup with DS9), with every character being pretty strong by the end… with the exception of Mayweather, whom I think they realized didn’t have much to offer so they basically ignored him as the series went on. I think they were going for a more likable Wesley Crusher, but the only personality trait he ended up showing was that he was perhaps cognitively impaired. Nice guy though!

    • @infinitelybanta
      @infinitelybanta 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomcruisenukedmyaccount5388 I liked Seven of Nine too (on Voyager, I have no idea who the character on Picard is supposed to be), but I think that it’s sort of sad that they sacked Kes to add her. I might be in the minority, but I thought that Kes was one of the more fascinating characters in the first three seasons of Voyager and her rapid aging and abilities would have allowed for some interesting stories, which they just then rushed through to get her off the show. Seven sort of unbalanced the show too, as she became a huge focus after she was added. Which was good for her character but sort of bad for the overall ensemble.
      They probably should have gotten rid of Harry (which I think was a rumor that he was considered to be removed instead of Kes) or better yet, that p-file Neelix. It’s funny that they sort of just quietly moved away from their relationship, with some quick lines about how they broke up. It would have been interesting if Neelix had ever been directly approached about how creepy he was, hooking up with a three year old, but I understand why the show wouldn’t go there (probably shouldn’t have even introduced the relationship at all then…)

    This was the first episode I really had a problem with. I have been very lax with my judgement of this series so far (I really want to enjoy it), but the end of this episode bothered me. Three scenes in a row involved someone confessing or being confronted about some mistake and no one was punished at all. No personal accountability. Una confesses to Pike about lying about her identity and status as an augment and he brushes it off completely because he likes her as his first officer. Una ignored the fact that her friend had hit her, which should have at least gotten her a reprimand. Sometimes TNG Picard let things slide, but not before dressing down the offending officer and making sure this mistake won't happen again. Una confronts Dr. M'Benga about his transporter shenanigans and how it nearly killed the crew, but she lets him go without even a warning. They just demonstrated that all the laws and regulations of the Federation and Starfleet can be thrown out the window whenever they want. Remember when Lt. Paris messed up and Janeway demoted him? Remember when Picard told Cadet Crusher that he needed to confess to authorities about what he and his classmates had done? Remember when Worf publicly disagreed with Data (who was in command at the time), and Data privately reprimanded him for it? Each of those officers was really important in their roles, but they were not spared the consequences of their actions. NOT punishing someone when they step out of line can have severe morale issues on a starship, and in general. E.g. "How come SHE got away with it but not me??? This captain is playing favorites!"
    TLDR: This show doesn't seem to adhere to basic human reality, but clings to a broken ideal where people can do whatever they want, but not have any responsibility for the consequences unless it was good.

As for the plot twist of Una, that was a bit of a surprise, but not too much. As for the ending, I won't give it away, but it really is unnecessary. It's an interesting subplot but far too much of an issue in such a large ship. I might have accepted it in Star Trek Voyager given the size of the ship and the strange situation they were in, but not on Enterprise. As for how Una becomes the source for the recovery of the crue, yeah, well, whatever it needs to move the plot along. The series still shows promise, but I'm not giving much hope...yet. Before, there were some SciFi movies and TV series I enjoyed watching. From time to time, I would revisit these old favorites. In the end credits, there were some scientific sources listed, usually for consultation on technical aspects of the show. Surely this was to have some level of realism for the audience. It was good that the writers made an effort creating a thought provoking and entertaining story.
    This latest Star Trek program has a long way to go in being just a good show. The sophomoric behavior of the characters, current vernacular spoken and reference to the recent medical crises is quite off-putting. Perhaps a Star Trek series made after The Next Generation ( decades or centuries later) may have been the better course of action. At least some fresh ideas could be created. I'm personally not keen on reinventing older material.
    There is still room for improvement. We'll see if the franchise listens to what fans want to see in coming episodes.
    Thanks again Dave for making a fair and critical review of the show. Cheers!

    La'an could be a product of Khan and a concubine. Khan did say he was a prince in Star Trek II the wrath of Khan, or some other relative like a nice or second cousin.

    IF Genetic engineering is Illegal in this world of Star Trek, How in the world did they not get in trouble in episode one of Strange New Worlds when they used genetic engineering to alter Pike's and Spock's, and La'an's appearance to match that of the alien species they were about to meet. And how did they know how to genetically alter them when they had never seen that race of aliens before and they weren't on any records or data bases.

      Like with the Geneva Convention, genetic engineering for medical purposes is fine, but you cannot use it to improve someone beyond their original capabilities. Using it for cosmetic reasons probably straddles that line, but I assume the changes are made to be temporary, so I would give it a pass.

    I thought this episode was by far the best overall. The series isnt great but it is far better then the other 2 of 3. I stomached my way through 2 seasons of Discovey and I went halfway through Picard season 1. The ending to this episode was very ex machina but I liked how the final message was a nod to not judging people without developing a full sense of the person. I felt the Number One character was kinda of a nod towards people who developed anti bodies towards Covid naturally versus people who had medical help. The whole episode while being a "Naked ______" rehash had a certain punch considering we are going through a pandemic.

    What other Trek tropes are coming ? A shuttle crash, a court martial, holodeck malfunction, evil twin, lost lover returns, captain gets mind controlled, warp engine runs wild...

    Why was Uhura dressed like Guinan in bed? Another frying pan across face moment was, Number one casually carrying a colleague to sick bay, in slow motion. Go, Strong woman, go (away!) Stop giving Kurtzman Star Trek stuff!

    Fun is good ... let's hope for Fun ! Good review. One reviewer said the show hits its stride by ep. 5, so I'm holding out till then, at least. Fun; at least the bridge and the uniforms are colorful 🙂This episode had a bit too much women for me, but it was mostly entertaining. #1 seems to walk/stride slowly/ deliberately when someone is beaming on board a piece of the planets magma or when shutting down the warp core. (!) I'd be running, but maybe she's more controlled and professional. (?) Keep the reviews coming ! 😀

    Personally i don't really have a problem with the obligatory alien infection episode (most of the time). But it would have been nice to see a twist on the formula, like in the Babylon 5 episode 'Confessions and Lamentations'. Oh well. It's still better than Picard/Discovery so far.

    Here's a plot hole/trope episode 1.3 unintentionally solves: Scotty's continual underestimating of the Enterprise's capabilities. Una secretly sets up a hidden power drain on the warp core for Dr. M'Benga, then when Scotty later joins Engineering (before becoming Chief of Engineering) he would observe and rate the ship's capabilities at that less than optimal level thinking that is the best it can do, i.e. thinking the 95% performance is actually 100% performance. Then when Una and M'Benga rotate out and presumably remove the secret power drain without his knowing, it would be to him that suddenly the ship performs better for no discernible reason, which he wouldn't ever count on because he can't explain it. AND to Kirk, who has also been present for the secret power drain, would later just credit better than previous "best" performance to Scotty as a great engineer, his so-called miracle worker. Solved!

    I'm curious what your thoughts are on season 2 of Picard. Personally, I feel it started strong with the first episode but quickly regressed to and surpassed the terribleness of season 1.

    Your sentiments are much like mine. I did see many parallels between these episodes and the more classic Trek shows. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Plasma storms, viruses, etc. are all part of the universe that was previously built. We need a causality loop episode where “I don’t think we can start second guessing ourselves.” But as long as they take the characters somewhere while keeping it more Trek I think I’ll be alright. I don’t think a whole lot of people really wanted the gritty shows they were coming out with. Evidently Hollywood has a whole lot of disposable capital to waste on multiple seasons of bad shows though.
