Matt Barnes always keeps it real. Great for people to see where he came from and how thoughtfully he speaks. If everyone that dislikes him for his play on the court saw this video, I'm sure a great deal would change their minds about him. Happy to see that he's having success after his playing career ended. I saw him once at a hotel pool with his young family when I was with mine. He wasn't well known at that point but I knew him at a glance because I followed UCLA basketball. We lost to Missouri in the NCAA tournament because the UCLA coach took Barnes out and they went on a run. Always wished him the best.
In this VICE Sports exclusive Matt Barnes explains why all the hardships he experienced in his youth helped him grow as a man and become one of the most valuable role players in the NBA.

There was something I always liked about Matt Barnes and the presentation is a confirmation why I like him because he's been there on the other side of the track so to speak and I particularly loved him sticking up for his sister and fighting because I had to kick a few butts over my sister when we were growing up and he definitely knows the street side of life. I hope Matt and his family are alright because losing your mother leaves a huge empty space that I do not believe will ever completely go away.
Knowing the pain that people have endured always makes you respect than more and I have ten times more respect for Matt Barnes than I had before watching this.

Thank god that Tony Gonzalez chose football instead of basketball. Then you have names like Nate Robinson, Matt Harpring and JR Smith who probably would have made better NFL players than NBA.
A lot of people (probably you as well) would do too.
If I got scholarship for football and basketball. I'd choose basketball because in the nba the contract is guaranteed
Reginald Dorsey he was a beast WR if he had chosen football his career would've been over 5 or 6 years ago tho. In his teens he got by at hoop on his size athletic ability and how hard he played. It took him 4yrs at ucla and a few more after to refine his skills on the court and contribute.
Don't care about all the negative comments here. Nice piece vice! Matty ice built his success from the gutter and pain. I 😍 haters!
+The Reaper 😭😭😭
YO, I'm not too old for cute emojis. I'm 12 yrs old. Hahaha. I just look 40. Yikes!
+Richard Nunez man this dude went to an all white school he didn't go through shit
I have already watched this segment twice, and it was worth every second and every minute too.
I'm glad I saw this. Matt seems OK. He's smart and passionate about his family and the road he took to success.
damn you Vice Sports... humanizing players... I always thought he was an arrogant bastard on the court.
He is, lol. He's been arrested and always gets in fights with people
smh
Madboot Ninja because u know everything that goes on in his life and why he is the way he is. right
ShadowLinkX damn you gonna excuse him because of his miserable life? i'd like to see you meet him and see if he actually is nice to you. threatening a cop, getting angry because he got blocked, and more. he is a successful basketball player and makes a lotta money, there shouldn't be a excuse
Lol
Kudos to you for overcoming all the hard times you experienced .And came through a great Father for your Children.
I see this brother in a whole new light...
What a great story!
Mad respect coming from Clippers, We miss you barnes stay healthy on grizzlies.
Always wished him the best.
most humble dude I ever meet in my life I swear
In this VICE Sports exclusive Matt Barnes explains why all the hardships he experienced in his youth helped him grow as a man and become one of the most valuable role players in the NBA.
STFU VICE SPORTS.Greg Ostertag is more of a man than that jackass!
***** whats wrong man matt barnes is youre boyfriend
***** second of all MORON hes trying to describe the life of his father who is the real gangster and making it seem like he lived that life too. He grew up in a nice home went to highschool moved on to UCLA do you honestly think that he's a thug then you must be as fake as barnes
china4151986 STFU you little racist bird-brain.
ⒷⒶⓃⒼ|ⒷⒶⓃⒼ thats the best you can do i can start getting rude to you let me know just keep talking shit we can do this
Matt a real one. Never knew he was mixed always thought he was Spanish.
America and racism is like peanut butter and jelly, cant have one without the other.
Souk Khanhsila, can’t have the world without stupid people.
If racism went away right now, people would still be abusing each other over dumb shit.
Thats all you got outta this video,u missed out.
@@klubkid46 how can we ignore it when your ppl reminds us daily?
blacks are the most racist people in america.
ever seen the fbi crime stats.
After this he drove to Derek fishers house and beat him up
America, the Racist Hypocrisy.
Dont blame him one bit...

You can look at him, and tell he is a brother. I have so much respect for him now knowing what he has Ben through.
I really admire his humble beginnings. Its really inspiring thanks for showing life story.
Newly found respect for this man!
matt is such a real one. he's been through a lot. glad to see he rose above it all
Even though he wasn’t a star I always loved watching him play. One of my favorite players ever.
Oh shit. I like Matt now. I know so many with that story.
Glad he got a championship I have new found respect for Matt Barnes he's a good dude
As a long life clippers fan. I hated this dude when he was on the clippers. Now that I got to know him, Nothing but mad respect
Knowing the pain that people have endured always makes you respect than more and I have ten times more respect for Matt Barnes than I had before watching this.
No one ignore what he said about coach cheeks "why u practicing your shot you're not gonna use it here"....that's not even remotely funny someone needs to confront him about that
Hector Serra many ppl n power ( coachez, teecherz, bossez) r n-secyur wurfless peecez uv 💩 that shud never havv gotten 2 the pozzishun they havv
Mahal Kita ????
Where he at?
hate Matt's game but respect the man he is.
This man is a class act and a great rolemodel. Bounced around a little in the NBA and found his place and role where he could contribute, and now he is an exeptional interviewer and storyteller alongside Stephen Jackson on All the smoke. True inspiration
"remember what we did at Chris Paul's house?" You dont hear thst every day... i lost it.
Matt speaks so eloquently. I am truly amazed and quite a level headed individual. His boys are a spitting image of him.
He graduated from UCLA :)
Having spoken with this guy in a casual, non-NBA environment, super relatable and down to earth. Very happy to see him having such a robust second life as a media personality/commentator
5:30 WOW Mo Cheeks is a dirty son of a gun. I'm a Matt Barnes fan now love this interview
