    I think this car looks really, really good! Nice job BMW! I have to admit that i have a soft spot for this car. I rented the old model last year for three weeks when i went to Norway for vacation. It was the 225xe and i was definitely positively surprised about its performance!😅 I def didn’t expect it and it had a nice “butt-feel” when eg overtaking. The e-motor being in the rear made it so much more nicer to drive than those with the e-motor integrated in the transmission. This way the e-motor is a direct drive and has that EV feel to it, and is much more efficient as it’s not using the gears. Due to the positive experience of the 225 xe i rented, i decided to trade my RRS SD300 for a p400e. The delivery time was almost 6 months so i bought an i3s, that i have wanted to get for so many years. I got the i3s last September and the p400e in January ‘21. The i3s is my primary car now and has clocked over 27000km on it since, the Range Rover Sport has a bit over 5000kms, lol!😅Why i earlier mentioned that it’s good that the BMW has the e-motor in the, is because i compare it to the RRS, which has its motor integrated in the transmission, so it goes through the gears in EV mode. It definitely doesn’t feel as smooth as the BMW did with direct drive, which actually feels very much like my i3s. I am hoping RR is very soon releasing an EV version of the new RRS, will def trade it in! Otherwise it will be a Rivian or similar. But holy smokes, 326PS on the new 230e hybrid, that must be fun to drive!❤️

    Thank you Thomas for these very good reviews.
    You are the best car reviewer of the whole TH-cam.
    3 years ago you have helped us choose our MPV, we landed on the 2020 B200d which was the best for us at the time.
    Now coming towards the end of our lease we have to choose a new one.
    As you show us, the 2 series active tourer has evolved a lot since 3 years ago, at the time the difference was really big with the 2020 B Class and it was an easy decision to go with the Mercedes, now the choice is becoming more difficult.
    I am convinced about the 2 series active tourer except I have one big remaining fear: I will go for diesel, and I did a test drive of the B218d with its 7 gears last saturday and I felt it is a lot less dynamic drive compared to the B200d with its nice 8 gears gearbox.
    If we stay with the B200d and don't go for the 218d it will be for difference in the driving experience. BMW should really put a gearbox similar to the one of B200d, or do a 223d version with more power.
    If we don't stay with Mercedes it will probably be for pricing reasons. As i watched the Mercedes strategy presentation to investors the top management of Daimler clearly says that they want to defocus from Premium and focus on Luxury, so they no longer care about the compact segment and they want this to be reflected in their pricing. My local dealer already warned me to expect a +20% compared to the previous lease for same configuration, at BMW I have similar configuration with +12%. This can make the difference in favor of BMW despite the loss of driving fun with 218d, and that is because I am not a "Luxury" segment customer but a "Premium" segment customer as it is meant by Daimler's top management.
    The other alternative that I have looked was the new DS4 BlueHDI Opera style, it would be absolutely perfect except the very weak engine power.
    So maybe BMW218d is the most likely winner in our family, except if Mercedes is still able to care for the Premium segment customers, their pricing policy will tell. At equal price the B200d will win over the 218d because of the superior driving fun.

    Damn, this looks surprisingly good. Arguably BMW’s third best looking car behind the 3 Series and 5 Series. And the only car so far from BMW along with the M3 that looks good with the big grille. The interior is arguably the best in a BMW car today, however it’s disappointing to see that it doesn’t have the iDrive rotary wheel (which I love in my 2011 BMW 323i), though the screen isn’t too far from the driver and is centred towards the driver which is good. Overall, a very good looking car and I’d think the best car in it’s class.

    And they just stand there as if I would put wide a screen monitor there myself. They should at least protect the main screen against sun with dash extending over the screen.

    I really love BMW but for me it’s a no go that they eliminated the Idrive controller, climate controls and the 8 shortcut buttons. I love the usability of my current BMW and I hope that the other models will remain with the controller. Otherwise it’s a really good update to the predecessor.

    • @patrickbateman6885
      @patrickbateman6885 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you about the infotainment system. The iDrive rotary wheel is what I love about my 2011 323i and it makes it much easier to control and climate and shortcut buttons are good as well, however from the looks of things it seems BMW have integrated the touch climate controls the best out of any car manufacturer and the touch screen is very easy to use.

    As a Gran Tourer driver and this beeing the combined successor I see the trunk is missing a few hundred liters. Is the trunk lighting better now? Did they fix the sometimes failing camera based systems from Gen 1? Is a better parking assistant available with front cam? Android Auto is finally integrated after BMW ignoring half of the smartphone market forever. Is driving assistant able to hold the lane or still ignoring it? Gen 1 was starting to be disappointing when viewing at it from 2020 available tech perspective.

    Current owner of the 218d gran tourer. The kidneys are overkill, the rest is good. It would be nice to have a 7 seater or at least stretched version for even more luggage capacity.
    I still don't know how car manufacturers continue to stretch platforms to accommodate more leg room for back passengers, yet the most important thing on a FAMILY car is rear trunk.
    2 small children and you need at least an estate/caravan size boot to accommodate buggys, scooter, wheels, hoverboard etc. If there's also a midsized dog, you can forget it, need to buy a proper van like V Class or T6.
    That's why cars like Golf Sportsvan or Active Tourer are mostly driven by older people who appreciate more head space.

  • @youtubetalk3595
    @youtubetalk3595 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love your videos and how you always call out the manufacturers for crap ergonomic choices like removing buttons or capacitive buttons. I agree with you that OS 8 is a big step backward, especially regarding the climate controls. Not only is using the touchscreen worse than the old knobs, but every function besides the temperature (fan, seat heat) is hidden behind the CLIMATE MENU. So to do something as simple as change the fan speed you have to press at least twice on the touchscreen and have it take up the full view, obscuring the map/music/whatever else you were doing. How is this an improvement over the simple row of buttons beneath the vents from current models? BMW has gone from the best in this category to the worst.
    And I'm surprised you didn't mention the biggest omission of all, the iDrive rotary knob. Is this the first ever iDrive-equipped BMW without the knob? This is a huge change and an unfortunate direction. With this car they're telling us that a touchscreen and voice controls are all that you need and it's really not true at all. BMW has completely thrown away their best in class infotainment and control ergonomics.

    At last Autogefühl are giving the Active Tourer a bit more attention as this vehicle has often been overlooked by the motoring journalists even though it's been a thoroughly decent BMW.
    My current Active Tourer has been a great small car and i think "mini-MPV" is a misnomer as it's more a hatchback+ as it's not a seven-seater or even a true full-3-person rear seats i believe BMW calls it a SAV - Sports Activity Vehicle.
    On this new model: The looks are good although i can't say i'm a complete fan of BMW's new over-stated looks design philosophy but it's one of those things we tend to get used-to over time (like the Ford Scorpio 🤣). The A-pillar blind-spot looks-like it's been addressed, hence the steeper window rake and thus no proper HUD - and the dash fasica looks quite high too. The wheels look-like they sport larger profile tyres as the 19inch tyres look same thickness as the current 18inch tyres on ATs - so probably the same as they use on their X1 & X2 vehicles. The interior looks really upmarket, but maybe too fancy?? No cloth seats!? Can you store the parcel shelf under the boot-floor like in the new 1-series? No physical buttons for the a/c controls is a fail ☹ and iDrive 8 to clunky for when driving sometimes i wonder if car manufacturers forget we use these things when driving not bored-surfing on the phone at home! Nice to see a version with a stronger powertrain, the B48 looks to be detuned even more (my current 220i has 192hp 280nm) but being compensated but electrical power is a good idea the current ICE-only version's brake recovery seems wasted. Hope they bring-back the Flamenco Red paint!
    Anyway thanks for giving it a decent first-look overview, now i'm looking forward to Thomas' driving review! 😁

      Yes, thank you, that's clear. I was wondering in what ratio are the 2 engines contributing to the overall power output.
      Just checked BMW article: 1.5l petrol provides 150hp, and electric motor 177hp. Should prove to be very useable performance in ev mode. Looking forward to your full review and test drive!

    Nice job BMW. Hopefully there will be an option to combine the high performance engine with a soft, absolutely non-sports, suspension setup. I'd like to be such a car like a cocoon, completely isolating you from the (bad) roads and the outside world. Pure gliding softness - a cradle of relaxation. But then also enough engine power that is just there in case you need it. Sort of a family Bentley...

      I really hope the plug in variants of this new 2022 model have a soft suspension. The 230e M sport has the M adaptive suspension so tempted to go for the Luxury 230e as i am hoping it will be a more comfortable ride than the M sport with its sport suspension setup? No demo models available yet for plugin as production only starts in August.

    It's a really nice car, however I do have a major problem with BMW's current policy of trickling down technology and design. The sporty 2 Series Coupé will be released in January 2022 with a complete 3 series interior clone and BMW OS7. Then a month later the 2 Series Active Tourer will be released with a completely new interior and BMW OS8. That does not really make much sende. Same with the 4 Series (Gran Coupé) which still gets OS7 Interior but the i4 already gets the OS8 interior at the same time. And by the time of mid-2022 the 3 series will get its facelift with a BMW OS8 style interior and all those models will look old-fashioned. This in my eyes really diminishes the attractively of the BMW 2 Series Coupé.
