I put vinyl planks in myself after a contractor quoted me 9k to do in a rip off scheme. I was a single mama to a 2 year old at the time, utterly exhausted and in need of flipping a run down house. I did the work at night while the little one slept. Whoever is reading this, don’t doubt yourself, you can do it.

I do think it's crazy that somewhere movies was going to charge 9 thousand dollars for a day's worth of work... It almost seems like somebody was trying to take advantage of you. I will admit I don't know how much work you need to done but I would have had at least four quotes, And realistically they all should have been in the neighborhood of each other not exactly the same but they should have been in the neighbourhood of each other. I had some friends who just had some flouring installed for four grand, but that cost covered demo, cleanup, and laying the sub floor and new floor in about 950 Sq feet

hard to imagine you would have the tools and knowhow to undercut all the doorways , level the subfloor and be able to transition from room to room. I found it actually really tricky in some areas of my own home and I am a finish carpenter/ cabinet installer with LOTS of tools and experience (none at all with flooring though) you must be a real unicorn of a DIYer. Id love to see some pics of this job you did!

I highly recommend you join Joe's laminate university/bootcamp if you have any flooring projects. He is a wealth of information and a great help. He helped me install my LVF in a hallway with many door ways and down the stairs. Had it not been for him, I would have given up and hired a company to do it. I am super proud of the way it looks and get compliments from anyone who sees the flooring. Thank you so much for all you do Joe!

Thanks for this video, I just came across your while watching something totally unrelated. But I was just about to install vinyl in my basement tomorrow, and I really needed the help doing it. Come in handy just at the right time. We paid a renovator to do this job about two years ago, but the water tank burst and cause mold under the floor and on the baseboards, so I decided to do it myself this time, because I just didn’t have the money to pay again. I must say I learn a lot by taking on this project.

I have been watching your videos on installing vinyl flooring and have gained a lot of information. I appreciate what you do. You explain well.
Although not a professional, my husband is quite good with doing work around the house. As a matter of fact, he installed the wood flooring (3" W planks) in the house in three rooms a while back which turned out quite good. We recently purchased Aquaguard (6"w) laminate flooring that we found in the same color (cherry). We checked on pricing for the existing floor-it’s just too much money. He is in the process of installing the floor in the first bedroom which is off the hallway. He removed the existing carpeting and added the recommended plastic liner over concrete. This will make the floor slightly lower since he is not installing the plywood. Instead of starting right under/at the door with the first plank (I thought he should) and going out from there, he lined up against the wall (with the spacers--he did make sure that he was installing in a straight line, etc.) and went from there. He figured he would come back to install the last plank under the door (figure out something) and add the finishing plank back in. The floor is installed now--today (it looks good) but he could not figure out what to use at the door to make up for the height, so he mixed up some concrete to install in the doorway to make it higher and will install the plank after it dries. I took a picture of this but could not figure out to add it--not a computer expert at all.
We have two more bedrooms off the hallway which he plans to start on about the 2nd week of next year. So, my question is what would you suggest on transitioning into the bedrooms instead of what he did previously? I hope I have explained what he did correctly, and you understand what I am asking.
Also, he had issues with the floor itself not snapping (many broken pieces/edges as well) as it should. It did not go as easy as their video indicates. Anyone else have that issue with this flooring.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. God Bless Everyone in the New Year!

This video definitely has the best explanation for how to use a cheater plank. How bad does a "dip" in the floor have to be to required the cement leveling? Mine is very minor, the bubble still stays inside the guide markers, resting against the left side of the marker on the level. I was hoping that would required the cement leveling product. Can you advise?

Positioning the planks to run down the long areas makes sense, but what do you do if the floor plan has one area where it ends up being narrower in that direction? Do you still stagger with small pieces through that area, or do you run full boards across for fewer joints? I'm having trouble visualizing

There are lots of other great videos out there but yours seemed to be the most And best explanations. The only thing I struggle with is understanding how you use your cheater board not how you make it how you use it... I don't know where to put the plank that you're about to cut that you're using the cheater board on top of does it go on top of the previous row of planks idk 🤷‍♂️... I have watched a few videos and I am still trying to learn.

I gave a question in this video at 44:45 where you are going through a door into the next room. You snapped your reference line, installed a couple scrap pieces then used your cheater board to scribe the walls onto the first vourse in the room. My question is, does the first course inside the next tool still connect to the flooring in the door threshold? Thanks again for all of your explanations and encouragement. Joe, thanks for posting all the helpful information on installing vinyl plank flooring. I am getting ready to put vinyl plank in two of my bedrooms. Vinyl plank has been placed every where else in the house we found the exact flooring to put in so it will match. I have a question, at the entry door of each bedroom the vinyl plank was stoped in the middle of the door frame so I was hoping to pick up there by attaching a plank to the existing one. There lies the problem the tongue has been removed so there is nothing to attach to. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this work? I really don’t want to use a transition strip if I don’t have too. Thank you in advance for your help.

Joe, thanks for the great videos. Once I followed your tips I had much better results and easier time installing in my vacation condo and all was good but when I came back a month later I found a soft spot in one of the rooms (can feel the plank depress when you step on it. not a lot but obvious to me). I have not yet resorted to removing the new baseboards to check if due to expansion. Not much change in weather. In Hawaii, a bit warm and humid at times but not bad. And its a couple feet from the side of the room where I started so don't want to start pulling it up. Cali 8mm vinyl planks. What do you think? Suggestions?

I'd like to see the same video using the cheap vinyl with square edges that curl up when you drop lock them, see how well you can do the hard areas, or certain engineered click and laminate is so thick it's hard to do doorways, you gotta shave the lip and glue the groove, I do commercial work cheap so I'm fast and I also do private work so I always do a good job, customers can't believe how fast I am, in the first hour yesterday I had over half the living room done and started off the hard spot with brick fireplace on 45 and heat vents down the wall, fun stuff lol as an installer dealing with poor products is part of the job lol vinyl doesn't always install this easy , I find I gotta adapt and learn to install different products

As I have said before. I had to re-learn how to lay flooring from Joe. Because Joe's ways were so much faster and more accurate. People make plenty of notes. One day in HD this couple was buying flooring. So I shared with them about Joe and his training on youtube. Then another day I was filling gas in my truck and a woman came up to me and started thanking me. It was the same couple. I went over and shook hands with the husband and listened to how the installation went. He said it was a perfect install even around the door jams. Also, he said thank you to encouraging him to remove the baseboards. Now he knows why it is so much better to remove baseboards. The end look is so much more elegant to look at.

I like the idea of screwing it down but how to you get the first row in after marking from center?

Your videos are fabulous - thank you for all the great info!! I would like to install vinyl plank flooring in a bedroom that had a very creaky subfloor. I’d like to fix the creaminess first - what’s the best way to correct the creaking sound?

This floor looks easy to work with , show a video like this with a thick vinyl floor where you have to take of the door casing off because you can’t lift the pieces under it

Whats your take on filling grout lines when installing plank over tile? Isnit necessary especially if they are 1/4 or less?

I’d go right over it with vinyl plank. This guy does way too much prep for a vinyl floor.

I watched a lot of your videos after I installed my plank floors. BIG MISTAKE!!!. I installed them but out from the wall too far. Then broke my ankle that needed two surgeries, so now I have to figure out a way to make the border look nice. HELP!! LOL.

Joe, if you had a hallway running towards a master bedroom but the master bedroom was then running perpendicular to the hallway, would you still run the hallway lengthwise?

Every layout is different and should be decided by what you think looks good. There is not a wrong answer.

Hey Joe, first I want to say thank you for all the great information you share in your videos. I’m underway on tackling my first LVP flooring installation that will cover the entire house. I’ve removed the carpet and found particle board as the underpayment throughout the whole house. It seems to be in ok condition (house built 1979). Would you recommend installing LVP over particle board? I’ve thought about laying 1/4” plywood like you’ve done in this video over the particle board. I’m just worried about the board potentially swelling in the future and needing to demo the LVP again. Your recommendation is appreciated. Thank you.
