    Tailscale doesnt' work well for me because my pfsense firewall doesnt' have UDP hole punching enabled. I know I can enable it but not sure if I want to. Would be nice if Tom did a video on the security implications of enabling UDP hole punching in pfSense for tailscale.

      There is no enable/disable for UDP hole punching. I did a video on tailscale and pfsense

    Surveillance Station is a SOLID security camera platform. Active Backup for Business has saved by bacon more than once, and it definitely worth setting up. Remember, Microsoft is ultimately NOT responsible for your data! You have to make your own backups. If they have a fire at their data center, or a cyber attack, or whatever else, your data can be destroyed beyond recovery. Your local backup of critical business data could be the only thing between you and the unemployment line.

    Do you think Hyper Backup or Snapshots is a better option for backing up 1 synology to another. Using the Active Backup For Business for all of our VMs

    • @mrcoffee6767
      @mrcoffee6767 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We use hyper backup for the entire to another synology and use snapshot replication for shared folders, specific to our day to day business. We can quickly recover our day to day files to get operational quickly.

    Unfortunately, Synology's new 7.2.2 DSM update has removed HEVC (H.265) codex from being processed locally for Surveillance Station and "After the update, cameras set to “motion detection by Surveillance Station” will switch to "motion detection by Camera" if the cameras support it. If your cameras do not support “motion detection by Camera“, the function will be disabled, and the related functions (e.g., recording schedule, notification, alarm, and action rule) will also be affected."

      Such a shame. You would think the licenses that we pay per camera would cover the license fee.

    @7:30 re Active Backup for Business: "Unfortunately the Linux backup on this is not great". Yeah, it's really not great.
    When I was all-in on Windows, I used to pay for Backblaze for each Windows machine. I'm looking for something as easily set-and-forget as that for Linux Desktop machines.
    Do you have any suggestions on what to use for Linux backup?
    I keep getting told "Oh, just use rsync set up a crojob" or something like that. But it's still not fantastic - and if it fails, there's no error reporting unless I go build it.
    I've tried Duplicati - but similar issues there, and it can't back up files that are locked (like sqlite DBs).
    I'd love something that can do the equivalent of Volume Shadow Copies from Windows/NTFS on Linux. I believe LVM Snapshots should be equivalent, this avoids the locked files/inconsistent state issues, but I have not yet found anything like it.

      What issues did you have with Timeshift? My problems were lack of UI polish and lack of notifications, but I've also never had it fail (since it's entirely local).

    • @SomeRandomPerson
      @SomeRandomPerson 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@minifig404 I hadn't heard of it before, but looking at it now I'm not sure that it's actually a backup tool. Infact, they explicitly call out that it's not meant for user-data and to use some other tool for that.
      Additionally, it looks fairly limited in terms of backup targets - via SSH only. Which makes life difficult to use an SMB/NFS mount.

      Look up Tom's old video on APT backup. He uses that to essentially create a list of apps that are installed then that same APT backup system to restore them.
      Then he backs up his home directory with SyncThing to his NAS SyncThing nodes.

    Do you still use the Synology camera you reviewed a while back? How has it been holding up? Do you prefer Unifi protect or Synology surveillance station with their cameras? Thanks

    Any chance you could make an updated install guide for Nextcloud on TrueNAS Scale? A lot has changed since your last video with the introduction of the Nextcloud 2.0.x and the release of TrueNAS Scale 24.04.x-Dragonfish.

    Nice overview of some of the great applications on the Synology NAS. Linux may present a problem for Active Backup for Business, but I completely recovered my wife's Mac after a hardware problem earlier this year. I would like to leave you a "like", but the button stopped working today. I am not doing anything abnormal (haven't even had the computer on for most of the day). Since Susan is dead now, one would think TH-cam's anti-user, anti-creator crap would have stopped!

    1 year cost to backup our Gsuite data with a online backup service (quoted out several) cost more than the Synology cost for us (with drives).

      Are you comparing the cost of cloud backup to local backup? Wtf, that doesnt make sense, they are two very very different solutions.

      No the cost of backing up the Cloud Google Workspace to another provider is expensive. Using Synology to backup Google Workspace or Office 365 is much cheaper.

    Jellyfin > Emby
    Frigate > Synology SS
    But to each their own at the end of the day. Respect to all who self host

    Tom, i do like your content a lot, and i think youre a good creator and teacher. But i just wish you would focus more on "open" software, like OpnSense vs pfSense, and things like TrueNAS or unRAID vs Synology etc... i know you already covered the pfSense vs OpnSense stuff (sort of), but just in general, i wish you would take into account the more open solutions more. Personally i dislike pfSense (Netgate, the company, not the software), and i am not a fan of closed system devices like Synology NAS or QNAP etc, but i still follow your channel for a long time now and i enjoy your videos. Just some feedback.

    • @LAWRENCESYSTEMS
      @LAWRENCESYSTEMS  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I cover all those things, and it's worth noting unRaid is closed source.

    • @PPPH1L1PPP
      @PPPH1L1PPP 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Thanks for replying! I didnt mean to say that you never covered any of these things, i only meant on average, its my impression that those things come up a bit short here. And i know unRAID is not "opensource", i never said otherwise. I mentioned unRAID as comparison to something like Synology, which (essentially) requires specific hardware, and is closed source, at least unRAID can be run on most common PC hardware, same as TrueNAS. So in that comparison, unRAID is more "open" than Synology DSM. Never said unRAID is "opensource". And i even put the "open" in quotes.

      Dude.. He's pretty much the only techtuber advocating for open source software in the enterprise. A Synology video in the middle doesn't detach from the fact that he's doing more for open source adoption than most people ever will.

  • @Bob_Smith19

    Symology is abandoning home users w/ horrible spec machines, insistent on 1gb LAN and lack of Intel CPUs for media servers.

    • @PPPH1L1PPP
      @PPPH1L1PPP 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Look at competitors then, QNAP, Terramaster, Netgear and newcomer UGREEN and many more options. But the "best" would be to simply use PC hardware and then run TrueNAS or unRAID on it, longterm you would be very thankful for that choice. It only needs a little bit of effort to build and setup initially. But youre not locked to a specific hardware vendor and their choices of "apps" in their "appstore" and such.

    • @MacGyver0
      @MacGyver0 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Had similar feelings then realized that for a fast nas I just need a TrueNAS in a custom chassis. Much more flexibility. Synology is great as a backup destination with slow spinning rust, and embedded software packages are good enough. Having both solutions is the way.
      Also, it feels like I don't need any new Synology anymore. Good job, Synology.

      @@MacGyver0I don’t want to go through the pain of migrating to another platform. I use most of the programs mentioned in this video. Just give me a four bay w/ a decent Intel CPU, no N100, and 2.5gb lan. Xpenology is always an option but I’d rather stick w/ the real thing.
