I thought this would be a budget version of Fire Emblem at first glance but after playing the demo I am really impressed with the unique gameplay and production quality too.
To be honest Fire Emblem Three Houses felt more like a budget game to me though i personally loved the game, the maps were pretty poor though compared to the 3ds iterations. But the story and characters were better in most instances than most of the 3ds ones.
unique for jrpgs specifically, real-time with pause crpgs are one of the main classic forms of combat in western rpgs. It looks like just recently that jrpg developers have begun to adopt crpg combat (don't know why this didn't happen earlier tbh)
Praise Square Enix for making a gem like this! Quality tactical games are VERY scarse on console, and I played this demo to death. All my characters are lv 15, bought all the best gear, and I am SO ready for the release!
It's just Kingdom Under Fire but without the third person combat. There are alot of similar games of this genre. SRPG: Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate.
This feels like the advanced version of Battleheart gameplay in 3D and i really love those kind of gameplay and DioField seems perfect. Can't wait to see more!
The demo was far more enjoyable than I expected. It feels like a good Fire Emblem style deep Tactics RPG with Dragon Age 1 style pause/play combat. LOVE IT.
I really love this game! One thing I feel they could add as a feature is sticky selection, where once I give a command, it doesn't deselect the hero that that I've already given a command unless I explicitly deselect them myself. They can also improve on the AI. Sometimes one of my heros kill an enemy and then they just sit there watching the rest off my heroes fight. I'd like for them to auto target any enemy that the rest my hero's are targeting if they are idle.
I freaking Love their artstyle it's so damn beautiful. It reminds me of Natural Doctrine a bit except it wasn't real time and you can hit your units if they're in the way xD also it's was so damn fking hard because you cant sit in a safe zone trying to strategize the perfect position to all gang up on an enemy because they'll also position really well to destroy you once you got close to them.
I loved this game, after playing the demo for 30 mins I decided to buy it and I’m glad I did. Excellent game, I wish square enix would put more time and resources into putting out more quality double A experiences like this
Getting on Switch. the demo was really good. Controls really well for a console rts game. Portability will be key for me to really sink in. Though I must say, I will be waiting for this to drop to 40. It is pretty hard to justify full retail when you have so much backlogged
You have a pause button with unlimited use... DA2 and DAI are as slow as you want it to be... I think the main problem is that there's a major bug in DAO where your tank's defense stats from previous armor stays on them, so they essentially get double armor become almost unkillable, and that's how most players get through DAO with just simple tank-n-spank. (you have all the time in the world since your tank would almost never die). Later 2 games don't have this bug so you had to actually think and control, hence it feels more pressure and too fast for you?
Thanks for this review! Downloading tonight. Diofield chronicles has a very mid-late 90s feel to it in my opinion and I'm not sure if that's what they were aiming for or if it really is considered budget but I'm excited for it. Also, British voice actors are so underrated. Triangle Strategy would've been twice as good if the voice actors were British lol.
I've really been enjoying the demo. I was already anticipating this one, and the demo doesn't disappoint. The only thing I could see them improving is tightening up the controls a bit in every mode, and perhaps a little bit of work on the textures. Other than that, the game looks, feels, and plays great.

The summons had me all jazzed up an shit. Lol I do agree with the voice acting, I'm pretty sure it's good. 🤷♂️ i know it didnt stick out as bad and thats always good, and I didn't mind the way the game looked, I was pleased in that area. I even enjoyed the 3rd person sections of the game. I can't wait!
I beat the game earlier this week, and overall I just felt it was....okay. I'm glad I got it and had a good time with itm as it filled the time well while waiting for Star Ocean: The Divine Force, but I feel like it could have been a lot better with a little more budget and time in the oven, so to speak.

Here I was innocently playing Xenoblade thinking I might not need to buy a new game for a little bit. Maybe I’ll have time for some backlog! Maybe I’ll finally get to 13 sentinels!? But the gaming shelf had other plans for me apparently
The combat is basically real-time with pause from crpg. And its a closest thing we have for a j-crpg. Ive been hoping somday that a j-crpg will be a thing. Since crpg really have various character builds, branching story path, and its real-time with pause strategy combat and sometimes turn based combat

But this one seems very different and inviting to me anyway... So yeah I will be putting this on my Christmas list lol.
I didn't mind the gameplay, but having played Triangle Strategy earlier this year, I just felt it took so many narrative points from that game that I really just felt like I was just playing through the same story as Triangle Strategy with a different coat of paint, making it seem like a chore to play through tbh. I enjoyed the combat though, but frankly that was about it
This game looks right up my alley, but I must critique the walking animations that aren't synchronized with the speed of the characters. It makes them look like they are running under water. Hope it gets fixed in the final release.
What about back attacks? After just two stages i feel like this might be irritating to constantly try to redirect characters to attack from the back while everyting is moving real time.
Thanks for the review. I was miffed at the game's exploration as the characters models barely have any contrast on them. However, the very moment I noticed the use of chromatic aberration, this game is for me to avoid. It blurs the model in an iffy way, resulting in no clarity in the image. I have strained my eyes playing MotoGP 19 on Steam thanks to that feature, and after I disable it (via notepad, editing I might add) I genuinely feel my eyes finally relaxed. Unfortunate SE just has to do this, because the story and the gameplay actually interests me.
It's great that you're enjoying the game! So am I, I'm having a good time so far. :) But let's be honest, there are some things that deserves constructive feedback too, and is worth mentioning. Like when you have one character selected but the pause menu selects another - annoying when you try to stay with the quick pace of combat and dance in and out of pause, assigning commands. They look like they're running in place while moving across the ground, which is more of a minor thing, but still. And a lot of the characters sound too deadpan when talking to really suit the situations. And I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with wether they're british or not lol. Then again, this wasn't marked as a review, so maybe I'm being harsh on the video. It's just I think these things are worth mentioning.

@@TheGamingShelf Not that I'm aware of. Langrisser perhaps? Rethinking my suggestion..the Growlanser series was on the PS2/PSP so I'm pretty sure emulation may be the only way to play it (unless you want to hunt for it on e-bay...)

This is an argument for releasing demos. I didn’t care for the game when announced, but after the demo, I’m probably getting this day 1. The only thing I don’t like is not being able to completely skip dialogue. This becomes annoying when playing the practice mode to grind. And that’s the only thing I don’t like. I do question releasing this one week before Valkyrie Elysium though.
Same with the critique about character's name. It is very hard to remember. Compare it with fire emblem which very easy to remember. Enjoy the gameplay in demo tho. I like this demo better than triangle strategy demo

Looks like a Final Fantasy game and Baldurs Gate 2 had a child... and that child would hang out with Fire Emblem on a daily basis.

It probably helps that RTS games and grid-based games are almost nothing alike. Plus, FE doesn't have skill trees, just classes.

The first game that came to mind when I saw the combat system: Growlanser. That similarity alone has caught my interest.
Looks awesome! Reminds me of Dragon Age Origins. Before it pivoted to a faster pace combat. DAO combat was much slower, like Diofield.

Really enjoy this demo, definitely getting the game soon once I finished with Triangle Strategy, Live-A-Live, and Star Ocean.

I loved that the high tier weapons give you a peek at the rock-paper-scissor mechanics

i suggest you to check the Chinese market for some good C-Crpg which are mostly what you are looking for.

You should play Pillars of Eternity, this combat style is called Real Time with Pause (RTwP) and it’s a staple of CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate

Each battle is very different and you won’t always need to do that.
You should check all the wiring in your perimeter! You shouldn't be getting shocked from playing a game!
My interest in this was middling at best, now I’m definitely anticipating it! :)
I enjoyed very much my only gripe would be the summon animation comes and goes really quickly.
Probably just to keep the flow of battle going.

Is the strategy similar to Valkaryie Chronicle? Also is the demo on PS5?
Not really. VC was more turn-based and required aiming. This is more real-time, setting up a strategy and just letting the characters do their thing.

Will the game be strictly story based progression? Or will it have a gameplay that allows you to do something else?
There’s side quests and you can walk around the base and talk to different people.

Agreed! Demos can be a double-edged sword but also helpful for situations like this. Hopefully Valkyrie Elysium is great as well
