  • Complex World goes beyond the headlines with real issues and real news. In the last week of Ramadan, we spoke to 'Everyday Struggle' co-host Wayno about being Muslim and the connection between hip-hop and Islam. We also talked to Imam Khalid Latif from NYU about the sweeping surveillance of Muslims that takes place in New York City and across the country.

      Yes, it's true that there will be people who hate the Islamic religion and ideologies by their own preference and ideas. However, I think anyone who disagrees with the religion should bring up why they disagree through debates about the Islamic scriptures, what the scholars of Islam interprets it as, etc. People can then make up their own decisions based on evidence - both for apologists of Islam and ones who go against it. I suggest you watch Christian Prince debates as he brings up very interesting details about Islam.

Please consider this comment not as a rebuke for following false religion but as words from someone who believes what you're believing is a lie that would cause you to go to hell for eternity. The Allah that you hear about in Quran is not the same God who created you and me. He will not be there in your paradise. I'll pray for you and others in this thread. I love Muslims.. I've visited Central Asia and Afghanistan to meet Muslim brothers for sole reason to save them. He acknowledged and saliently explained the global issue of racism, particularly anti-black racism, and how deeply embedded it tends to be in South Asian and Arab communities, as well as how these communities need to do the work of eradicating these sentiments in order to create unity in Islam. They're even putting this into practice at the ICNYU. He's definitely an ally and a cool as dude. I'm glad to see him on here mashallah.

      Jesus proves you wrong
      *BIBLE PROVES JESUS WAS A MUSLIM.*
      *LANGUAGE*
      Hebrew, Aramaic & Arabic share the same "root" language which is known as "common semetic"/ "dialect".
      Moses spoke; Hebrew
      Jesus spoke; Aramaic
      Muhammad spoke; Arabic
      The name for "God" is the same;
      MOSES*- Hebrew- ELAH / ELOAH
      JESUS*- Aramaic- ALAH / ALAHA
      MUHAMMAD*- Arabic- ALLAH
      Abrahamic Greeting "Peace Be Upon You"
      MOSES- Hebrew- Shālôm ʻAlêḵem
      JESUS- Aramaic- Shlama Alekhun
      MUHAMMAD- Arabic- Salam Alekum
      In Hebrew, Jesus is; YESHUA
      In Aramaic, Jesus is; EASHUA
      in Arabic, Jesus is; EESA
      The letter "J" is NOT in the Hebrew alphabet.
      The Romans Latinized the His name from "EASHUA" to JESUS to convert Him into a Roman.
      Then, they added "CHRIST" from the Greek language which means "MESSIAH".
      What language do you speak???
      *LAWS;* Don't eat pork.
      Leviticus 11:7
      And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
      Leviticus 11:24
      “‘You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
      Leviticus 11:43
      "Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy."
      Mathew ‪5:17-19‬
      JESUS said;
      *"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (The Torah) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.*
      *For truly I tell you, UNTIL HEAVEN AND EARTH DISAPPEAR (Judgement Day), not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (The Torah) until everything is accomplished.*
      *Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.*
      *Bible says if you eat pork or follow anyone who eats pork, you go to HELL!!!*
      Isaiah 66:17
      "Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one who is among those who eat the flesh of PIGS, rats and other unclean things--they will meet their end together with the one they follow," declares the LORD.
      Do you eat pork???
      *CIRCUMCISION*
      Luke 2:21
      On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named JESUS, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
      Are you circumcised???
      *FASTING*
      Matthew 4:2
      After fasting forty days and forty nights, He (JESUS) was hungry.
      Matthew 6:16
      JESUS said;
      "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
      Do you fast???
      *PRAYER*
      THE JEWS HAVE A FORM OF WORSHIP.
      Matthew 26:39 “He (JESUS) went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed to God (ALLAH).
      Genesis 17:3 “Then ABRAHAM fell on his face, and prayed to God (ALLAH) (talked with him.")
      Numbers 20:6 “So MOSES and AARON went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces and prayed to God (ALLAH).
      Joshua 5:14
      Then JOSHUA fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and prayed to God (ALLAH)
      Do you pray the same???
      JESUS CONFIRMS HE IS A MUSLIM IN ORIGINAL ARAMAIC GOSPEL;
      Luke 6:40 - In ARAMAIC
      JESUS said;
      "Ein talmeed na'leh 'al rabbo; shekken kal adam she'MUSHLAM yihyeh k'rabbo."
      Translation in English: "No student can be above his teacher, but everyone that is a MUSLIM, can be as his teacher."
      IF JESUS CAME TO THE JEWS, THEY WOULD REJECT HIM.
      IF JESUS CAME TO THE MUSLIMS WE WOULD ACCEPT HIM BECAUSE HE IS A MUSLIM.
      MUSLIMS SPEAK THE CLOSEST DIALECT TO JESUS.
      MUSLIMS FOLLOW THE LAWS JESUS FOLLOWED.
      MUSLIMS PRAY EXACTLY LIKE JESUS.
      MUSLIMS BELIEVE JESUS IS THE MESSIAH.
      IF JESUS WENT TO THE CHRISTIANS, HE WOULDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE. HE DOSNT SPEAK ENGLISH, HE DOSNT EAT PORK AND HIS FORM OF WORSHIP IS DIFFERENT. AND IF THATS NOT ENOUGH, THEY DONT EVEN KNOW HIS NAME. THE CHRISTIANS WOULD HAVE TO TEACH JESUS ENGLISH AND CHRISTIAN FORM OF WORSHIP.
      THEN THE CHRISTIANS WOULD FORCE FEED JESUS PORK.
      WHY WOULD JESUS WANT TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THAT?

    Whether we like it or not, music is not permissible in Islam. We must not follow our desires and we must not use perosnal opinions over the clear text of the Quran and Sunnah and the sayings of the salaf.
    Allaah says in Soorat Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):
    “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]
    The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).
    Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).
    The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
    “Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).
    Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This is a saheeh hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as evidence and stated that it is mu’allaq and majzoom. He said: Chapter on what was narrated concerning those who permit alcohol and call it by another name.
    This hadeeth indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haraam. The first is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haraam according to sharee’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haraam, i.e., zinaa and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haraam, why would they be mentioned alongside these things? (adapted from al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 1/140-141)
    Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This hadeeth indicates that ma’aazif are haraam, and ma’aazif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments. (al-Majmoo’, 11/535).
    Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: And concerning the same topic similar comments were narrated from Sahl ibn Sa’d al-Saa’idi, ‘Imraan ibn Husayn, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas, Abu Hurayrah, Abu Umaamah al-Baahili, ‘Aa’ishah Umm al-Mu’mineen, ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, Anas ibn Maalik, ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Saabit and al-Ghaazi ibn Rabee’ah. Then he mentioned it in Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, and it indicates that they (musical instruments) are haraam.
    It was narrated that Naafi’ (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Ibn ‘Umar heard a woodwind instrument, and he put his fingers in his ears and kept away from that path. He said to me, O Naafi’, can you hear anything? I said, No. So he took his fingers away from his ears and said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he heard something like this, and he did the same thing. (Saheeh Abi Dawood). Some insignificant person said that this hadeeth does not prove that musical instruments are haraam, because if that were so, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have instructed Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) to put his fingers in his ears as well, and Ibn ‘Umar would have instructed Naafi’ to do likewise! The response to this is: He was not listening to it, but he could hear it. There is a difference between listening and hearing. Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Concerning (music) which a person does not intend to listen to, there is no prohibition or blame, according to scholarly consensus. Hence blame or praise is connected to listening, not to hearing. The one who listens to the Qur’aan will be rewarded for it, whereas the one who hears it without intending or wanting to will not be rewarded for that, because actions are judged by intentions. The same applies to musical instruments which are forbidden: if a person hears them without intending to, that does not matter. (al-Majmoo’, 10/78).
    There are numerous other proofs that are clear on the issue. We do not treat religion like a buffet and pick and Choose what we feel like adhering to and what we do not.
    Shaykh Albani (Rahimahullah) said “One proof is sufficient for the seeker of truth, but 1000 proofs is not enough for the person of desires".
    A reminder benefits a believer.

    I love this piece but it fails to add the origin story of Islam in hip-hop which ultimately starts with the 5%ers. In my opinion, adding that element even briefly, would've given this story a fuller life. Some may view this as there is only one way to follow Islam and that's the Islam that's featured in this piece

      Agreed king. The syncretism of Islam and Blackness played a major role in hip-hop's development.

    African Americans are *provable, direct biological descendants* of those who built the Mali Empire (an Islamic empire, founded by the Mandinka people). One of the greatest empires in the last 1000 years. Mansa Musa (a devout Muslim) is considered to be one of the wealthiest men in history. Do not be surprised to see African Americans accepting and practicing Islam, as a) Its the truth b) their ancestors left a distinguished Islamic legacy, built world class universities of Islamic and secular knowledge within the Mali Empire.

    This was definitely interesting... but having interviews with those who have been wronged is most definitely a slippery slope. I only want to understand everyone’s perspective as much as humanly possible🙏🏽 Ramadan Kareeem💯🙏🏽🙌🏽
