Today, the colorful market is much more than just a place in which local Jerusalemites come to buy fruits and vegetables. It has become a magnet for domestic and foreign tourists, serving as a unique place in which one can enjoy and participate in the city's everyday life.
In recent years, the Mahane Yehuda Market has also turned itself into a nightlife venue, in which bars and pubs open up once the vegetable- and fruit vendors close their stalls. Life music, a huge variety of alcoholic drinks, great food and good vibes are all to be found at night at the Market, with Thursday night being the most popular night of the week.
The Mahane Yehuda Market operates from Sunday to Friday and is closed on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. Vendors open their stalls early in the morning and close shop at around 7 PM. On Fridays, the market will shut down about one before before the beginning of the Sabbath.
You can easily reach the market from Jerusalem's Central Bus Station by Light Rail. Walking the same distance by foot will take you about 15 minutes. After visiting the Mahane Yehuda Market, you can walk to downtown and continue to the Old City, which is easily reachable via a 30-minute walk.
Mahane Yehuda is the name of the market, but also of the adjacent neighborhood. In the late 19th century, Jerusalem's main market was at Jaffa Gate, and it served as a market for both Jews and Arabs.
