      ***** Hey mate, I am not the one you should be criticising here. I was just inspired by what Henry Rollins said and the Mark Twain quote, so if you have an issue, take it up with them, not me. And besides even in Saudi Arabia I am sure there are at least one ow two nice people who don't like what their tyrannical clerical counterparts are doing. You dont really know a country unless you have seen it for yourself. If you have lived in Saudi Arabia and have experienced oppression for yourself and have endured 400 lashes for kissing in public in your own personal experience then I will definitely buy more of what you are saying. But for most of us who have either only ever visited there or have never been there at all, we are not really in a position to judge too disparagingly, and I think that is the point Rollins and Twain tried to make. Well if Twain were still alive obviously. Personally for now I have no intention of visiting Saudi Arabia or any country that stones women to death or throws gays off buildings, but if I am persuaded to go and check it out for myself to be sure of these facts then it might be important for me to go there, and then I can honestly say what a truly disgusting backward country it really is, but until then I try to keep an open mind about everything, example being if I was persuaded to see for myself.

    • @padmac8176
      @padmac8176 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I dont think there is anything Leftist or retarded about wanting to broaden your scope and seeing places, and obviously taking extreme precautions and researching that country before you go there. Anyway Allan have a nice day.

    • @padmac8176
      @padmac8176 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ***** And I never said to generalise all of Islam as being a good thing just because in this hypothetical scenario you might meet one or two good ones on your travels to one of these countries. What I WILL say though is conversely by YOUR logic it seems we should all be wrapped in bubble wrap and never set foot out the front door of our home for fear something bad will happen. How does that broaden your education in any way? Bad things do happen in the world, of course they do, that's part of life. But most times they don't happen! I am sure you know this already. And comparing travelling to a foreign country to sample a different culture to being raped up a back alley is just ridiculous! Come on mate! Surely you know better than that!!

      He's probably alot nicer these days than he was during his Black Flag days....now, mind you, I don't know the man, but I recall an interview, of Mr. Rollins, by a nervous young teenage kid (the video can be found on youtube), where Henry just RIPS into this kid, talking about his hair, the way he's dressed, and all kind of sh*t. Now Mr. Rollins, was (I'm guessing) in his mid 20's, and the interviewer looked about 14, maybe 15 and probably idolized Henry....I was actually suprised when I saw the video, because I never realized what an absolute jerk he is capable of being.
      I can't judge him for that, though, because when I look back to MY OWN younger days, I certainly had my share of "douchebag moments", so I'm glad to hear that Henry Rollins is nice in person these days.
      I don't agree with many of his liberal views, but I do think he is an intelligent man, and an interesting person.

    • @baronsaturday2103
      @baronsaturday2103 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The kid had this 'I know it all' attitude, acting like a little prick. He says things about 'fucking girls, get them pregnant, and kicking they're asses out of town 'cause he's got no need for them'.. Black Flag was a hard working band, the boy obviously didn't know anything about the band, telling them they we're selling out? He asked for it. I like the attitude of Henry Rollins, then and now. Some things need to be said.

    • @deborahlubarski1353
      @deborahlubarski1353 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, you have a point there. The kid did seem to have that "know-it-all" attitude....maybe he bring it on himself. I have to admit that, while NOW, at almost 40, I would've probably cut the kid some slack, but at 21-22, I probably would've been a bit of a dick towards him too.

    I've known of Henry Rollins since I was a preteen and never personally got into his music. I was a young punk rocker but I still don't really get into a lot of Black Flag and not a big Rollins Band fan, but when my buddy made me a 23 hour data disc of his talking shows I got it just as I needed it, I got a model of how to be an adult without really giving up my favorite anti authoritarian and rebellious parts of me, and I couldn't have survived without it. I just need to figure out how to get rid of my cynicism like he did and I'll be fine.

    I truly admire the mind of Mr. Rollins. He challenges our thinking, as well as his own. He's self educated, and has an incredible appetite for authentic experience with people as different from him as he is from most people. Sadly, a mind like his isn't driven to politics; which is truly unfortunate because the world today desperately needs people like him to take the reigns away from the wretches in power today.

    The best thing I took away from Henry's life is, anything is truly possible for everyone in life. It's really about how willing are you to work hard or step outside of your comfort zone and be all you can be in everything you do.. He is what I would consider as a successful person and it seems like he has learned so much from those moments or situations in his life and by that he made something great for himself from it all.. I hope that someday I can have a chance to shake his hand in person and thank him for the wisdom and talents he shares with the world. Edit: And I think that he would be a great President lol.

    I like Henry a lot, but I disagree with one thing he said here - "knowledge without mileage is bullshit." I disagree. In fact, I disagree quite vehemently. There are many people who would like to travel, but cannot. Sometimes, it's lack of money, other times it's health- related issues, but the fact is there are very well informed individuals, who have a vast knowledge about the world, who have never traveled, or have traveled very little.
    I have also met people who have traveled all around the world, and they are STILL ignorant. They still have zero knowledge about where they have been, or what they experienced. If you can have the best of both, that's the ideal situation.
    The point should be always learning about the world - whether you can travel or not.

      I agree with you, but I think his statement stands more or less under the context of combating those who believe they can/will have earned actual experience by watching documentaries or reading books or (God forbid) the news. Essentially, you can be informed by facts and data, but you can't be fully informed in the same way you can through real life experiences added to that background knowledge. Rollins is an intense dude with some intense opinions. I definitely don't agree with all of 'em, but he's entertaining as hell, so I keep subscribing. Cheers!

    Sure wish this interviewer could have given the audience just a second for that wonderful statement at 8:50 to sink in, especially after they were responding with some applause just before. He just wants to jump right into the next question about politics....really makes him look like he's not paying much attention to his guest, and doesn't have much experience interviewing.....

      Anyone who isn't independently wealthy would go broke trying to keep up with his travelling/touring schedule, for starters.

      Always found him an interesting dude to read interviews about, but frankly, he's always struck me as scary as hell------he always came off like the kind of guy a woman would stay the hell away from, to be honest. Cool to hear about his political views, though. He always seemed like the type of dude who would have wound up a racist skinhead or something like that, but it's a trip to see how he turned out (and was taught to be, despite his dad) the opposite of that.

      Because he is supposed to be. I agree, I have a huge crush on him, I fucking love him actually. But I think his logic and desire needs to be spread and might not if he had his girl to share it all with instead. Idk. I'm glad he's out there too look at and listen to, ....for sure.

    Henry needs to listen to "Low Self Opinion" and take his own words to heart. Humility is a beautiful thing but Henry is too humble...his music changed lives for the better. That shouldnt be undervalued.

    Education will only help a small fraction of the population who isn't getting adequate education... Education is like money... more of it doesn't make you a better person, but only accentuates the person you already are.
