    I’ll make this even cheaper for you all. For one gallon of wine, there is no need to use a whole packet of yeast. Use half and put the other half back in your fridge to use on another batch. I only use a whole packet for 5 gallon batches. 👍🏻

      My question is do or why use oranges? Some people use raisins or orange zest? Do you need potassium to stop the fermentation?

    I didn't "know any better" but made my first dandelion wine in a gallon pickle jar, with bread yeast, topped with a large balloon and siphoned off with fish tank tubing. It turned out beautifully. Have you ever tried violet wine? Also made in spring. Very delicate.

    Finally, FINALLY, a no fuss no muss let's make some wine video! This has got to be the best video I've watched on a DIY dandelion wine and believe me, I think I've watched just about ALL of them. I was becoming a lil pessimistic, being a first timer, after watching either the "flexers" or the other first timers trying to tell everyone "how to"...???... Then I watched your video, thank you! I now feel pretty confident about myself and my kids giving this a go this spring. Keep up the good work! Awesome video. Again, THANK YOU! Oh, and maybe give us a look see at how you make your blueberry wine🤔

      Hey, thanks for the positive feedback! I actually make automotive related videos on another much larger channel, but was - like you - completely turned off by the esoteric wine making videos that are out there that I decided to put this up on my personal TH-cam account. It really is not a difficult process, but everything wants to sound big and important. I hope you find luck making Dande wine. I have found that it is incredibly difficult to mess up. My other channel monopolizes much of my time, but I do intend to make videos for the blueberry wine and hard apple cider i have been making

      @@dougontheotherchannel3078 Thanks for the reply, I'm gonna keep an eye out for your blueberry and apple vids. And, you're absolutely right, our people have been doing this for thousands of years, without all the chemicals and the, ehem, sanitation we use today. My 20 yr old wants to get in touch with our Norse roots and give the OG of alcohol a go, mead. Have you ever tried your hand at that? And, what's the longest you've ever shelved/aged one of your spirits? If so, did it "mature"? I'll have to have my hubster check out your other channel. He's working on rebuilding a 72 Chevelle, and is always doing research. Thanks again for video and your time. I really appreciate it!

    so it's just like making ginger beer but flavored with dandelions?
    I think I'd just snip the base off the flower with some scissors, most of the latex(which is what's making it bitter) is in the stem so just getting the base of that out should be fine.
    also you can just get a 1gallon glass carboy for like 5-8 bucks at a homebrew store while you're there getting the airlock and skip the cheap wine hangover... careful you don't heatshock that bottle either.

    You took the anxiety away from the process. I’m working on my first batch now. I have enough Dandelion collected for over 20 bottles. You mentioned how in the beginning the bubbles moved quickly and it slowed down as time went in. It’s the second night and I’m getting a bubble as fast as every 4 seconds but sometimes I don’t see them for awhile. Is this ok? Does it mean my yeast is dying?

      The bad thing about old-style homemade wine is that it's not consistent from batch to batch, **BUT** the people who have the hygrometers and expensive yeast food and elaborate equipment will never get that amazing once-in-a-decade batch that knocks your socks off. I took one of those bottles of blackberry wine to a party and a professional wine dealer there told me it was the best wine he had ever tasted (admittedly he was schnockered at the time).

    I'm definitely going to follow the majority of this video to do mine. I brew a bit so I will make a couple small changes. I've picked and removed petals for about 1.5 gallons of dandelions. I am putting them in the freezer and letting them freeze, it is supposed to pop cell walls to get more of the flavor into the wine. Other thing is I think I will skip the towels, I have stuff to remove the petals. The tip of obtaining the petals was genius, though. I have been ripping the flower in two and pushing the petals so only green is left over. Scissors.... scissors would have been smart lol. You also gave approximate quantities which helps so much.

    Great video! Do you have to wait until there are absolutely no bubbles in the airlock? It’s been almost a month and it’s still popping once a minute or so. I feel like it should be time to rack it but don’t want it to pressurize! Thanks!

    • @cuscof2
      @cuscof2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope you waited until it had totally stopped. I generally wait until my wine doesn't produce a bubble for over two minutes before I decide it's done, but I've still had a couple of bottles explode. I use ceramic flip-top bottles, so now I'll pop the top of the bottle to release any pressure every few months until I'm sure it's done.

I've been making different wines for the past 6 years and still dont know the difference between dessert and dinner wine lol. Saying that... I'm making my 1st dandelion wine today. @dougontheotherchannel3078  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, not at all. I put some in on April 20th that is still going a little bit. Using this "not and exact science" method makes the whole process a little more difficult to predict. Following a more strict recipe with more traditional and professional equipment likely would allow you to predict fermentation time (and likely reduce it as well). The only time to worry is when it doesn't start to bubble. Good luck!!

    If you use the whole Dandelion it is much more nutritious. Especially for tea. The green leaves are a tonic for any ailment! My opinion is that raw Apple Juice would be better to sweeten it or use honey and raw sugar to be healthier.
    And it will still ferment and become wine without yeast. Just have to use pure water and leave it to ferment for 3 months at least.

    Why is yeast necessary with open air fermentation?

  • @averysmith8869
    @averysmith8869 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Three questions, Do you stir/shake to mix the yeast in? With the canning jars do you water bath them to seal them ? and lastly is the dandelion wine sweet, or dry?

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078
      @dougontheotherchannel3078  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You do not want stir or anything, just let it sit still and do its thing. You do not have to water bath the jars. I do try to get the wine mixture just slightly warm before bottling so that it will pull a good seal on the jars when it cools. Dande wine can be either sweet or dry. it all depends how much sugar you add and how long you let the yeast do its thing. If you take no steps to effect this specifically, you will likely end up with a mild wine in the middle.

      @@dougontheotherchannel3078 thank you so much for replying to me greatly appreciated, would you see a problem with water bathing them ?, and if i wanted a sweeter wine just do what you did but add like a cup or two more of sugar ?

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078
      @dougontheotherchannel3078  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@averysmith8869 Interestingly, your two questions are related. It is hard to just "add more sugar" because likely the yeast will just eat it. The best way (simplest) to get sweeten your wine is to go through the full fermentation process, then just before bottling sweeten to taste. This can be done with sugar or juice of some kind. Orange juice sweetens Dande Wine well, but will result in a cloudy final product. However you choose to sweeten it, you will have to water bath to prevent it from furthering fermentation with the newly added sugar. If fermentation continues after bottling your product will be carbonated and the bottle could explode. The water both will kill the yeast and prevent fermentation

    • @averysmith8869
      @averysmith8869 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dougontheotherchannel3078 I think Ill just follow your method with the carboy and ingredients, i do not want anything exploding hahaha, as long as it doesn't turn out super dry and tart chalky tasting it'll be awesome.

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078
      @dougontheotherchannel3078  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@averysmith8869 The key to really good Dane Wine is to let it age for a few weeks after bottling. Just 2 weeks will make a huge difference. Even dry dande wine doesn't have that citrus sharp flavor the dry grape wine does. If you use this method and let it age for 2 or 3 weeks the flavor will be smooth and subtle. Cant go wrong. Good luck!

      It will work for any wine, but some wines do better with a little more attention. For instance, I am making pear wine right now and I used a bit of yeast nutrient in the mash to help it alone. I also add pectin in some fruit wines as it produces a clearer wine. Dande wine is nice because of how brutally simple it can be successfully made. You will get wine using this method with stuff like apples, blackberries, pears, etc, but it might have a few characteristics you would rather change

      Wine yeast is cheap and available online for about a buck each but you've got to buy at least 5 packages which would be good for 25 gallons of wine. The good thing is that you can use the wine yeast for bread, but bread yeast won't handle the alcohol that the wine yeast is bread for.

    Pouring wine through a filter adds oxygen to it, and you don't want oxygen in most wines. But that won't matter too much if you only age it a year.

      That is a good point, but Dandilion wine ages for only a few weeks. It does not benefit from anything longer than that (though obviously you can age as long as you like)

    My wine has been fermenting for 2 weeks still bubbling. Should i rack it or wait for bubbling to stop?

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078

      up to you. I would probably let it go personally because I prefer my wine dry. you could rack it with an air lock instead of in a sealed bottle if you like to try to stop fermentation

      @@cindymcfadden7519 yes, fermentation eats up the sugar. The lack of sugar in wine is what makes it "dry". Good luck with it!

    Isn't 6 cups of sugar SUPER SWEET on the end product?

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078
      @dougontheotherchannel3078  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No. The yeast consumes it all and you actually end up with a pretty dry wine.

      Interesting. Could it be the type of yeast making it dry?

      @@mycrazylifewfawnlisette3582 yes Champagne yeast is good up to about 15% alcohol so it consumes more sugar than say a white wine yeast that dies off around 12% leaving more sugar

      6 cups is about three pounds. On the lower end of sweetness. I've seen people advocate five POUNDS of sugar which is sickeningly sweet. Gah!

    I saw someone using scissors to cut flowers off. I always save the cheese cloth!! The chemical to sterilize the bottles and equipment is cheap...I bought my glass carboys (5 gallons?) from online selling site like craigs list for $10 each!! Make sure they are Italian not Mexican though as the Mexican ones have a tendency to burst when you move them! I am going to go and pick some dandelions!!

    Why wash them? You would be better off just blowing any bugs or dirt off so you don’t rinse off the pollen

    • @dougontheotherchannel3078
      @dougontheotherchannel3078  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds normal. As long as there is movement occasionally. Sometimes you will get a "slow" batch. Good luck!
