  • This is the second episode in my series on vintage glass on Hasselblad cameras. I’ll look at the Tokina 500mm f8 mirror lens, and at the Helios 44-2 which is a 58mm f2 lens known for its ability to produce swirly bokeh.
In this video I’ll talk about why I use vintage lenses on my Hasselblad X1D ii and X2D. I have had many question the use of old glass on these high class cameras, some even said it was a waste of good cameras, and that I should just use a full frame camera instead, as they meant this would give better results.
Nothing could be more wrong, but it all depends on what it is that you are aiming for in your images. Therefore I have made a small series of videos, three are planned so far but more might come, where I will show exactly what it is that I can obtain with these lenses, results that I could not get if I used original Hasselblad lenses.
The lenses don’t fulfill the same purpose, some fill gaps in the Hasselblad line-up, others has due to their old design some flaws that can be used creatively. And my purpose is to show that extraordinary images can be obtained with these lenses, and that it could not be obtained to the same degree if I had used another full frame camera. To show even more clearly, that the sensor size matters, I’ll also have some examples shot on micro four thirds cameras (M4/3). Here it becomes even more clear, that the sensor size is an important factor in the results.
Remember to watch my other reviews of these lenses.

50mm Sonnars cover all of the X2D sensor. Mmmm. ;o) I have an old 500mm mirror I should try. I'll get an adapter.

Definitely, if you like the results mirror lenses can give, I worth trying it. I find some of the images I get are really pleasing especially with that fabric like structure in the unsharp background.
