Nikon F75, fully specked camera that has gone under the radar, lost during the digital revolution?
I have reviewed many analog cameras including lots of SLRs, but the subject of this video came as a surprise for me. The Nikon F75 looks quite unassuming but uncovered itself as somewhat of a powerhouse. It has so many functions, that some even nickname it “the plastic F5 or F6.”
Although i think, that is a big of a stretch, I do think it is an awesome camera, that packs a lot of functionality into a slender and light weight body. So in this video I give you my first impressions on the F75 before I take on a trip to Nepal as my only analog option. After the trip where I will probably shoot a large number of film, I’ll give my full review. So this is just a short look at it.

This is an unusual video for me. I ask for your input, as I can't decide what to bring for my upcoming trekking trip in Nepal. Only four days remain before I leave, and it seems I am in the lucky position to have to much very nice gear to choose between. I go through some setups that I consider, talk about what the different setups can do, and show image examples. But the final decision has to ...

    Got that tiny thing almost a year ago, probably unused. Still had the card protecting the shutter curtains inside. It is light as a feather and has an excellent grip for me, though it is really plasticy. With care it will probably last as long as the electronics inside it. Pity it doesn't work with newer 3rd party lenses that I own bit maybe for the better since they may be too heavy for the mount. Enjoy your trip.

    1:37 Canon specifically did not include the 24-105 (any version) in the list of recommended lenses to support the resolution of the 5Ds and 5DsR, so using that lens will not test the full resolution capabilities of the camera. While it is a good lens, Canon doesn't think it's good enough for the 5Ds and 5DsR.

    Ricoh had a business relationship with Ansco, where Ricoh camera models were rebranded for sale in the US. So this camera was sold under the Ansco brand in the US. It is really a very basic mechanism (meaning quite primitive), roughly equivalent to the basic Olympus Pen models. It's only distinctive feature is the spring-driven film advance. The body material is not very strong, so they are usually quite beaten up and look rough. They originally came with a nice case, rarely found, and a front cover for the lens and selenium meter, never found. Optical performance is not that special, but more than good enough for the less demanding users of today. Nice the camera exposure is fully automatic with no user control, if the selenium meter goes out, the camera gets dumped.

    To my it is quite suprising that you consider taking so much gear with you. Acutally I was assuing that one camera and one (or two) lenses will have to do. I wonder how you are transporting all this gear together with all the live-essentials (like food, sleeping bag, climing gear etc).

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your comment. It's a commercial trek on which I'm the leader. That means that all personal stuff is carried by others, and we only carry our personal gear, therefore camera and lenses are not a big problem, although there are limits to that. There's no climbing gear for a trekking trip except for some crampons for the glacial traverse of Cho La. I am semi professional photographer, therefore I need some more gear. I do gear reviews (mostly old stuff except the Hasselblads), and bring some more gear for that. And I do a lot of different styles of photography, therefore one or two lenses rarely suffice. So I guess you have no suggestions relating to my sets, just want me slim down. When I climbed on Everest and Cho Oyu (8202 meters) some years ago, I did exactly that, but that was also an extreme challenge. On Everest a Fujifilm X-E2 and one lens and on Cho Oyu even lighter with my Fujifilm X-Q2. That was for the climb itself, in basecamp I had my best camera at the time a Canon 5D mark III with three lenses: 17-40mm, 70-200mm, and a portrait lens, an 85mm f1.8. So the size of equipment depends much on the challenge, but for easier trips (for me that is) like this years trek, I want a diverse set of gear for all kinds of photography.

    I wouldn't even call this camera good. A year later they released the 5D4 with a much better dynamic range. It would have been nice for the 5DSR to have such RAW flexibility, but they created it using older technologies. Also, this camera did not receive any functionality that had already been mastered in the 7D/70D. This camera could have appeared in 2012 along with the 5D3, there is nothing impossible in this camera for 2012 technologies. In many situations where you can't get by with just ETTR, it is the dynamic range that determines the quality and size of the file that can be sent to work. Unless, of course, you like to look at the detail through the noise. And the dynamic range of this camera is only half a stop higher than that of the 5D3 and about the same on a pixel-by-pixel level. So if you had to reduce the resolution of a photo to hide noise on the 5D3 (for stock for example), you will have to do it to about the same extent on the 5DSR. Of course, the average image size will increase, but I would rather work with the clean and flexible 36 megapixels of the Nikon than with these fragile 50 megapixels, ready to fall apart from vignetting correction. Canon simply closed the "hole" in the line under pressure from competitors who released many high-resolution cameras. And they did it very lazily, without a single innovation, without trying to improve the quality at base ISO, nothing like that, it is just 5D3 with 50 megapixels. "You asked for a high-resolution camera? Well, here's a high-resolution camera for you!"

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's your opinion. Many professionals would disagree as results show something different. I find this a much better camera than both the 5D mark III and IV, both cameras that I have used extensively over period of years. It's true that dynamic range isn't the best, but I find that not very often need more than what this camera gives. Some are completely obsessed with dynamic range, I'm not, I even love the images from old CCD based sensors although their dynamic range was much less than the newer CMOS. In my opinion there's so much more to good image quality than dynamic range. But if you constantly shoot in conditions that require high DR, then I can understand you.

    I would have loved to own an RX10 IV. In the past I have used smaller sensor cameras, including the Lumix FZ200, FZ300 and FZ1000. The FZ1000 was an incredible camera, not as sharp as the RX10 IV, but very good, and without the extra reach. It was a very logical, usable and ergonomic camera. I matched it with a micro-four thirds Lumix LX100. The 1" sensor always surprised me and was not far behind the m4/3 sensor from that gen. Although the 1" sensor can lack some color depth, I find that this isn't always a bad thing, as it can impart a certain stylistic look. As I moved towards APS-C interchangeable mounts, I was able to get back the bridge camera experience by using a Tamron 18-300 (28-450mm full-frame equiv). Mounted to a smaller body like an X-E3, the combined weight is under 1kg and relatively compact. Makes a great travel combination and good for fair weather hikes. It is a weather-resistant lens and in tougher conditions I use with an X-H1. Both these cameras are similar vintage as the RX10 IV, and are still excellent to this day. The biggest advantage of the Tamron is it is a manual zoom, and not zoom by wire. I find it speeds up the process considerably, and also makes it easier to tuck in your bag. However, if most of your shooting is scenic, then this may not matter as much but for events and moving subjects it is helpful. Image quality wise, the Tamron is decent, but I wouldn't be surprised if the RX10 is better edge-to-edge. If I had to start over today, I might look into a Nikon setup running the new Nikkor 28-400 (725g) or the just released Tamron 50-400 alongside a cheaper manual prime. Though I'd still be tempted to go back a two camera setup and that would be one bridge RX10IV and one travel compact Leica D-Lux 8 (pretty much a LX100 with nicer trimmings) both 20mp. Just like my old FZ1000 / LX100 setup, it would cover practically every occasion.

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, you have tried a lot 🙂 I must admit, that if I search ultimate image quality I don't use the RX10, but rather a full frame or even medium format camera. But when versatility is important, RX10 is the answer in my case.

    I have used this camera as a commercial photographer for many years...its weight, 'low' light performance and old school design is not an issue for me. I find 1600 ISO is very useable and with a vr lens you can shoot most subjects. But, for me, where this camera is worth its weight in gold is in its RAW files...they are are fantastic...its like shooting with a medium format camera.

    It's strange to think that 3mp/4mp was once considered to be magazine quality.

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well sort of. If you watched the previous episode, using the 3.2 mpx A70, I printed A4 from an image from that camera. And the image quality was quite sufficient. Magazines don't print images much larger than that, so I actually think 4 mpx would still do the job today. But why then have more megapixel today? There are lots of good reasons among others in order to print even larger. At my recent exhibition I had som A1 to A0 prints, then it's nice to have more resolution. And to be more flexible in post processing, and in order to be able to crop, more megapixels really helps. But as I try to show with this series of videos, you can actually make really good images with low megapixel cameras - if you are not having issues like I did with the A80. Thanks for your comment 🙂

    • @sputumtube
      @sputumtube 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@key2adventure Thanks for responding. When I said 'magazine quality' I did only mean A4 size. That megapixel count was also good enough for newspapers, flyers, posters etc. I understand your point regarding higher megapixel counts for exhibition quality prints of course. I'm led to understand that's why, (in the early days of digital) silver halide photographic prints were still preferred for their extra detail, especially so in large format.(P.S. - do you have a website where I may see some of your work?)

    • @key2adventure
      @key2adventure 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sputumtube Printing for exhibition use, you also has to consider viewing distance. With your nose right up against the image, you need really high resolution if the grain (analog film) or digital noise (digital cameras) shouldn't be seen or part of your image, but if the image is so large it should be viewed from a distance, you might get away with much lower resolution, you might even use the old 3 to 5 megapixel camera for an A2 image. At my recent exhibition a had an A3+ image printed from a 6 megapixel camera, and my visitors thought it was one of the most interesting images. Yes, I have a website for my photography, you find it at www.k2-photography.dk and under gallery, you'll find just a bit of images, but also in other articles on that site, there are more images.

    Ive been shooting since 1999. In my 40's now. And these silver Canon Powershots were what made me ditch film and go digital. My dad gave me a A60 to encourage me back in 2004 and then I "upgraded" to the A85 a year later. I wore both out. Still have the A60 but it does not work whatsoever except powers up but yeah they inspired me to invest in a DSLR (10D used in 2006) and since then I have had many cameras and lenses and have taken over 250k photos (though most were deleted). To me these silver things were the ultimate entry level camera. And before digital my film SLR was a Canon Elan7 with one terrible 1980's kit lens.

      The expected shutter life of the 1000D is 100,000 - but you actually can't know. Some might survive 250,000 or more, but some unlucky owners only see 50,000 before it dies. I wouldn't buy a 1000D with more than 10-15,000 actuations. For more professional models it is a quite different story. The 1DX has an expected life of 300,000 but mine has done more than a million, and is still clicking happily away.

      Whether you can adapt a lens to another system primarily depend on one factor, is the flange distance of the system of the lens so much larger that there is room for an adapter. If you look at this information en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance you'll see that Canon RF is only 2mm larger than Hasselblad XCD. That's make it very difficult to make an adapter. Canon EF lenses have much larger flange distance, therefore there are EF to Hasselblad X adapter available. I use a EF 100-400 mm zoom, it vignettes a bit, but it can be used on the Hasselblad.
