First Look! Classic Everquest-Like MMO

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 14 ธ.ค. 2023
- I was lucky enough to get to play the in-development MMO Monsters and Memories over their 34 hour test and I came away from it with a few strong feelings.
1. This game is making tremendous progress
2. This game is also very very classically inspired. In some ways it feels more like Everquest than, well...Everquest.
I was joined on my adventures by none other than @MitchManix something I'm thankful of because this game really shines when you're social and grouping.
It also helps that he was a nice speedbump for the mobs so I could get away. Thanks, Mitch.

Wooo love the video. Thanks for covering our game! Hope you had fun!
Of course! Thank you so much for the opportunity. I had a great time.
Holding my breath, but I am DYING to play this. Fennin Ro, represent!
torvonnilous, but whatever
Man I'm so excited. This is exactly what I want. Just a new EQ with a fresh coat of paint.
Dwarf Bard alone is worth it tbh.
Dwarf beard you mean 😂
@@mjolnir3309 dwarf bard with a glorious beard.
I’ve been saying exactly this for a while now. They can definitely count on my purchase. 👍
Same! ❤
Exactly the mmo I was looking for. Thank you to creaters of Monsters and Memories and thank you to create of this video!
They're a great team over there at Monsters and Memories. Definitely check them out on their website. Their tests have been open to the public. Their discord is probably the best place to get any info on future tests. Cheers!
@redbeardflynn Your coverage of M&M is top notch. Thank you for highlighting the magic. This game is definitely passing the vibe check. I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Wow, after being so dissapointed with Pantheon and waiting a decade, I am STOKED for this game. I had never even heard of it! THIS IS WHAT MY HEART DESIRES!!
Wait, a Pantheon game that's actually being developed? Mind blowing.
Thank you for this @Redbeardflynn. My favorite videos are those that talk about the game they are playing, for which this video is glorious. Great job of showing off parts of the game while talking about what is going on. I would much rather watch this 40 times rather than a 9 hour video where most of the gameplay is standing in the same exact spot, talking about *other* games. So cheers for this.
You made my week with this comment, thank you so much!
As a lifelong (On and Off since beta in 1999) EQ player I was watching Shawn when he first started this project and then I kinda fell of watching his streams to great to see how far it has come.
It's come a long way even since the first stress test I got to play!
Never thought I'd be excited for a game release that makes an effort to go back to 90s style mmo gaming. I'm salivating at the potential
We had a blast running through the dungeon with yall! Hope to see you next play test! -Amasis
Thank you so much for hanging out with us!
I have been an old Evercrackhead since 99'. This is cool to see, but my old jaded heart of coal can't help but feel like it won't amount to much other than a jankier version of EQ launch. I hope they can make it something special.
Honestly skepticism is pretty par for the course in MMOs these days. There's something to be said for setting your expectations low, makes it easier to be surprised and less likely to be let down.
That Mitch Manix dying sound brings me great joy.
Always good to see fresh EQ type content!!
It feels *very* much like EQ in the beginning
This looks so fun I hope to be a part of the early years of this game
This games about to explode❤❤ cant wait for this to succeed and shake our modern gaming philosophy at its core. Cheers M&M, doin gods work. And also, Cheers Flynn
thx for covering if this game stays on track im totally playing
It's been making some big moves over the last half year+ I'm excited for what they will do in 2024.
Love the video, great channel, thanks! 'An arse with legs' made me laugh 🤣
You've got to check out Mitchmanix if you haven't yet. He was the one who said it was an "arse with legs" and he's incredibly funny.
It looks cool, but I would tell everyone to temper expectations... getting something up like this, while impressive, is one thing; developing an entire world to explore using this tech is another. Thanks bro.
Ive been following them for a while now and im impressed. I do worry about end game content though. Not so much that it’s not there but their stance on it felt unclear. I’m interested in seeing what happens when this game starts getting funding
I'm still not 100% certain where they want to go with the game, it feels like they're still straddling the line between passion project and future MMO but they're showing us a lot and not having an NDA is very nice. The last I saw they were still in the proof of concept phase of development.
@@Redbeardflynn Yep I get the same vibe. And maybe I'm biased, but the way I see it, if they want the buy-in of the most dedicated EQ players on P99, they will need to have a substantial plan for raiding. As those will be the people paying monthly, possibly on multiple accounts, to push forward. But as a former raider, thats just one way of looking at it.
corpse runs completely change the group make up and what challlenges people are willing to try in a MMO. Bards, Rogues, Necromancers actually have a lot of utility in a MMO with that ruleset.
It's incredible how well this game is coming along - far better than my expectations.
It looks like they're really capturing the feeling of the original EQ - particularly those first 30-40 levels of classic.
The movement and engine is looking really great, and captures that feeling really well.
I'm chomping at the bit to get another stress test and jump in again and see what they've been working on.
I am SO excited for Monsters and Memories. Currently playing Project Quarm as my first experience into a P99 like EverQuest and I am absolutely loving it! I even did a stream on Twitch examining the game's environment art/level design and gameplay to spread the word on what we can learn from classic games such as EverQuest.
Gave the test a try and had a blast, even though I could only play for a few hours and got to a mere level 3. Super strong EQ vibes with just enough modernization to make it more enjoyable on modern PCs.
this seems to be one of the better looking mmos from a small team. Im guessing this is still very early in the games life? It really be like one of those rags to riches stories for them if they get it right.
Still very early yeah. Only three years in so far.
I'm definitely interested! I just want it to be a modern EQ with better graphics and animations than EQ and a focus on difficulty and group play
It's been a lot of fun whenever I've gotten to play. Excited to see what else they show in the comings months.
I am actually excited for this.
Thanks for the video! Loved it! And that dungeon goes much deeper than that >:)
Oh no...that wasn't the bottom?
We ended up playing 24 hours of the 34 hour test. Great game.
Great video my friend! The game looks awesome! When you said about group dungeon content at very early level, Embers Adrift is like that. By level 2-3 you are already getting into group content and was a lot of fun!
I plan to give Embers a try this year, somewhere in this ridiculous schedule of mine. Thank you for the kind words!
@@Redbeardflynn I know Nathan had been playing it some recently but not sure if he still is.
We were doing the Friday Night EQ P99 stream but that kind of went by the wayside when PQ came out.
Embers had huge potential but you capped out at like level 20ish after release and we were starved for content and a huge majority bailed on it. I had 3 toons about level 20 and lost interest.
I havent got back into it, even though I should/could have when Nathan did.
I cannot wait to be able to play this.
Keep an eye on their twitter, discord, and youtube. They'll announce stress tests there and they're usually open to everyone.
@@Redbeardflynn just joined the discord. Looking forward to next test
Omg this looks so much fun....while I"ve been playing on Progression servers, looking forward to Teek that releases in a a couple weeks, I'd def play this too when it releases. My original server on original EQ back in 2002 was Morden Rasp.
Great video dude thanks! Glad you got some time in on this past test. :D
Glad you enjoyed it, Zukan. Finally got down into the dungeon!
I played it too, I enjoyed it a lot! Looking forward to when it comes out.
Definitely has an old school feel. I'll be curious to see where it goes. And rhe team working on it are very nice
I can't wait to play this!!
Man I cant wait to play more!
The question is... do Snakes kick........
A very good question. I should have looked!
They do indeed
Not only do they kick, but they have an animation for it.
Beardal 2023-2023 had me cracking up. This was a very entertaining video.
Haha so glad you liked that part. Thank you for saying so!
Looks neat.
For over two decades now my friends and I have wanted a new EverQuest.
I am so excited for M&M. I could finally be coming.
This game is more EQ than EQ is
It honestly does feel very much like early EQ at this stage.
As a necro, i had bags full of bones so i could summon my pets
Loved my time with Evercrack
I really need to try necro next playtest.
he really has the voice of a dwarf too 🤣
This is the game I've been waiting for. Got some of my non-EQ friends to play last weekend.
How did they enjoy it? I hope they had fun!
@@Redbeardflynn They liked it ok, which was nice cause the one had a terrible time during the stress test.
I'm really excited about this one too. I love old school style MMOs with a little bit of legit QOL sprinkled in. Not to be read as "making it easy". The only thing I'm going to say that'll probably get me a lot of hate is this. While I love the feel of exploring and I absolutely feel like that's stripped out of modern MMOs, I hate not having a map. I mean I don't expect a full map as soon as I come into a zone but like let me buy them or have a cartography skill or something, just something so I can track where I've been and where I am in game. It sucks doing it on paper outside of the game. It detracts from the immersive quality these kinds of devs work so hard to foster when you have to constantly look away from the game. Just my two cents but all in all I love what I'm seeing and the objective way you cover these topics.
I was only able to play for like 30 minutes but it was a glorious 30 minutes.
15:48 cleric has coma-like reaction speed lol
Shut up and take my gold coins!
Awesome - Draq
This is easily going to be the next WoW that really changes perspective on the current state of mmos. Keep in mind the only reason why mmos were so small in the days of EQ was because of marketing limitations. These guys are going to really shake things up.
Great video. Had me laughing.
This comment made my week, Cheers.
OMG walking beard man fist!!
"A shifty gnome."
I totally misread that initially... 🤣
They were the only one willing to buy my useless loot, too!
If you hadn't commented this I would have. I absolutely read it that way too.
For those of us who love EQ, this game will be pretty great. Everyone else is going to try it and just shit all over it. I had to work for the last 34 hour test so I didnt get to play but even the previous test you could tell it was going in the right direction. Probably going to be a few years still but I am looking forward to MnM.
Great video and looks like an amazing time. When do you think that game will have an open beta?
Glad you enjoyed the video! They've run sporadic tests that are open to everyone and their most recent update on January 7th, 2024 said they'd be hosting more tests in 2024. If they announce one, I'll be sure to either post about it on the community tab or make a video but you can also follow their youtube and/or join their discord for more timely updates.
I like watching this video
How did you make a guild? I was looking for the way to make one, but only saw commands to do things once the guild is already created.
I actually didn't, we just got invited to it.
good video
Thank you!
ok what's the song that plays around 4:30 cause that sht slaps lol
Love mmos. I'd try it, but I doubt it'll bear Project Gorgon (which I highly recommend). Free demo on steam.
I have some of my best MMO memories from EQ so I’m really keen to try this out. I’m pretty sure modern MMOs have ruined me for something as hardcore as this though. I wonder how much of a sub they are going to charge 🤔
It definitely takes re-arranging your mindset from playing a modern MMO to this.
Comment!
The algorithm thanks you
Love old school MMO gameplay but damn! Why the need for old school UI?
My guess is placeholder. Still early dev.
I want to play! Please! Take my Money!
Pass. Not interested in losing my gear at the bottom of a dungeon. Lose xp? Levels? Time? Sure. Gear? Pass.
Agreed. I played EQ before and during the PoP era, and it was fun, but I just don't have the time to dedicate to such a hardcore style of game anymore. The nostalgia of M&M is great, but dying in the dark to a rat at level 1 and not being able to find my corpse during one of the tests a few weeks ago made me realize it's just not for me anymore.
👍✌
so i looked into this game but when i tried to install it windows told me it was a virus so idk if i should trust it or not
I think in general windows is going to do that with anything that's an "unknown publisher."
tbh p99 is a bit faster, but this game is still being built.
My problem with these old mmos is the emphasis on only fighting one enemy at a time. Which makes tanking and healing an absolute bore. Even watching Nathan’s hours of pantheon coverage it’s almost all solo pulls and that’s in a fing group of 6 people. Snooore
I think that's what I miss most, tbh. The "lets pull 20 mobs at once" MMOs feel too much like Diablo which makes the entire combat system feel boring to me. I think it's a preference thing.
Not sure if I own a computer slow enough to play this game
just got a email from this game 15 a month to play it not sure
Yeah they announced their early access plans a while back. Idea is no box price no in game shop, 15 a month. But that's still a ways off. 2026 I believe
@@Redbeardflynn true in on this stuff more them me
Lol Mind the gap....
Haha I'm glad someone appreciated that.
Ever Quest 2 released in 2004 and it looked better than this. I don't see how this would ever catch on 20 years later and I played the original EQ from Shadows of Luclin.
I don't believe that's the goal.
@@shakeitoff1000 I'm not their marketing department 😅 but I imagine it's people that want something like the classic mmos but new. Like Everquest.
All these MMOs make scamtheon look even more wack.
Naked corpse run = no
i dunno why for these developers "classic" means: Looks and plays like shit.
It's not for you and that's totally fine, but its a definite style both in play and graphics.
99 games like this have no reason to exist....they do not have the player population to even be mmos. Its not worth a players time to invest in these games as there will be little to no community...thats the point of an mmo, community
I disagree. Project1999, an EQ classic server from 24 years ago, has a population big enough to support it.
An MMO doesn't need a million players to have community, doesn't even need 100k. Much of what determines community in an MMO boils down to mechanics, server size, scope and world size. WoW changed perception of what made an MMO successful in 2004 when their numbers bumped up expectations by orders of magnitude resulting in the closure of several good MMOs. I believe we're correcting from that and MMOs can exist with more realistic expectations of player population and build specifically around those expectations.
EQ servers back in the day were 2000-2500 players. And it trully felt like living a big town. Most of the people you didnt even know.
@@Redbeardflynn I just think its nostalgia that keeps people to remake older style mmos. I got my start in UO, EQ, and SWG years ago....and I just don't see these side projects adding anything new to the industry. Each their own, but I do not like these old-style games as they do not respect my time now as priorities have changed. Personally I do not like WOW as its far to commercialized and built around max profitability/retention not 'gameplay'. All these low-polly games just do not have enogh fleshed out systems or player progression or QOL servies to keep players...its why their is a failed pile of crowed funded games just like this one. Its ok to 'like' something but that does not make them objectively good.
@@user-di8or3fk7n oh for sure there's nostalgia but there's also a market for this specific playstyle, even the graphics. Just like there's a market for action mmos, pvp mmos, single player story mmos...etc. I think in 2004 mmos tried to homogenize and become wow which stifled genre building. We might be heading toward more clear playstyle genres in mmos over the last decade or so.
while I feel bad for how Pantheon turned out, I am SO relieved that this game is looking so promising! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I'm thrilled for both. The opportunities I've had to play each one at different levels has been exactly what I've been hoping for in MMORPGs for a decade.
