    Some hair raising climbs........and falls!
We were told about some recently opened tunnels buried deep under the famous White cliffs of Dover,
Originally built into tunnels during the Napoleonic wars of the mid 1800's, these tunnels were also repurposed during WW2 as deep level, civilian air raid shelters.
The origins of the tunnels are actually quite a mystery, so we delve deep into the subterranean caves to see what we can find.

I remember going into some of these tunnels 60 years ago and eventually got escorted out through the army barracks. Several of us swung around an iron fencing which over hung the cliff face. We must have been mad, but it was great fun at the time. Fantastic to watch your You Tube clip.

The army were still using them? Oh wait, 60 years ago? [does some math] .. that's still the 1960's though? I thought they were abandoned and mothballed directly after the war? they were still using some of them for something 20 years after?

You guys are insane. you broke the cardinal rule for underground exploration. ALWAYS BRING EXTRA BATTERIES FOR ALL YOUR LIGHTS, and also a full power bank for your rechargeable gear and don't forget the cables to connect them to your power bank. Light is the one thing you CANNOT do without! Other than that, you guys did a bang up job, I had no idea that there were tunnels in the Dover cliffs, Also I thought the white cliffs of dover were solid rock, and not chalk! Shows how much I know! I am part of a Flint Knapping community and came across a guy who wanted to do some knapping of rock from the Cliffs of Dover, but neither of us knew it was Chalk! So it would be completely useless for flint knapping! But it would be good for Carving. I have some carving tools used for various stone such as sandstone, soapstone and chalk so I could make something quite nice with a decent slab of it, so I am looking at the rock in the tunnels and thinking, hmmm, I could do some carving of that rock too, it would be nice to have a nice three foot or four foot rectangular slab of that Chalk but I don't think anyone quarries it, do they?

Nice explore!! Made me nervous though. I explore old anthracite coal mines in Pennsylvsnia and I recommend you use a surveyors string and tie it to the beginning. As you go deeper the string will always lead you back(especially if your lights fail) just like firemen follow their hose back out of a building. It's like an automatic maping back to the entrance. Do you have an air meter with you? Just incase the air is stale(low oxygen).Great explore!!

With Dover becoming a garrison town, there was a need for barracks and storerooms for the additional troops and their equipment. The effective solution to this was to create a complex of tunnels about 15 meters below the surface of the famous White Cliffs of Dover... As well as Casemate there are four other Dover Castle tunnels. At the top is Annex, which was dug out in 1941 to use as a military dressing station, where casualties were assessed and treated before being sent to hospitals further inland...At its deepest, the tunnel is 75 metres (246 feet) below the sea level.

Those last tunnels with the rounded floors were the sewers that served the bunker. I hope you washed up good (both yourselves & your gear) after the exploration! Hopefully you won't get polio, typhoid, yellow fever, scarlet fever or one of the other good old-time sicknesses! When one was followed to a dead end with only a small opening to above, you might have been under the lavatory area you explored earlier. Exploring sewers like that also carries the risk of being drowned. If it started raining while in them you might have experienced a sudden rush of fast moving water that very likely could have killed you. Many sanitary sewer systems also function as storm drains so they can collect & carry very large amounts of storm water very quickly.

I had a lady friend from Scotland, who immigrated to the States after the big war, and she told me that when she was a teenager, she and all the other children who would be playing in the fields below, would all run into the caves (that's what she called them), when the bombs were falling. She told me that there wasn't a minute to lose, and if you tarried, you would die. She told me that one time, that her girlfriend was lagging behind, and my friend, (her nickname was Kitty), said one moment the gal was there, and the next moment she was gone. I can't even imagine how frightening it was to have to run to the caves while bombs were falling, let alone the horror of losing a friend because her little legs couldn't carry her fast enough. 😭
Thank-you for this video. My friend is gone now, she passed from old age, but now I know what the caves look like that she was talking about.

The plaster treatment on the walls, the pipes in and out, and the mounting bolts on the top to probably mount a pump or other equipment; and the fact your boots were covered in mud shows that section is holding water. Would be curious to know if it was mud on the floor, or nearly 100 year old septic silt.

Spoiler: They have regular tours of these "Mystery" tunnels with actors dressed up as soldiers. In the UK, at the town of Dover, up on the top of the chalk cliffs, there are three tourist attractions: A Castle, A 2000 year old Roman lighthouse with an attached church and "Secret Wartime Tunnels". During the tour, they allude to older lower levels that at too dangerous to go through, which are probably the ones these folks are wandering through, although, I had hoped that the lower dangerous levels were actually still used and that the dangerous label was just a ruse to keep people away.

Having been brought up in Dover we knew there were tunnels under the Castle, my father and I went down one on an explore once until military boots preceded the lights going out. Ramsey organized Dunkirk evacuation from quarters there, but this was a revelation, thanks 👍NZ

Great explore Alex, someone has spent a lot of time and money building the supports and things. Really interesting to see what looked like a room full of flimsy petrol cans rusting away. Keep up the good work stay safe. 👍

In the early eighties our firm did a survey of the tunnels under Brighton from one of two entrances in the town hall cellars, one of the chambers was under lock and key and contained a home guard weapons stash from the second world war still intact and fully stocked, eight months later part of the survey was re done from the second entrance as the original entrance had been covered over.......we were told not to discuss the original entrance and to remove it from any survey mapping............wonder if its still there?

Always have backup lighting. A spare light, extra batteries, Plug in charging kind of light with charged power bank... Thats like 101... And leaving marks,.or leaving markers in caves and tunnels.. Rope line tied off as well incase your flashlight and backup go.. Can at least feel the rope back out...

11:01 Think that might be an indoor range and what your looking at would have been filled with sand and the targets would be put up on that concrete with the slots in it .Also there is the remains of the metal sheeting at the back we can only imagine how loud that would have been shooting in that tunnel .

Hello 👋🏻 from British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦. I love your channel and the amazing adventures!
What an awesome exploration , cheers 🍻 guys ! 🙂 those tunnels are crazy so many of them running all over the place down there. It’s hard to know where to go next and easy to get lost! 😮 I’m only about 10 min in but definitely looking forward to seeing all of this 👍🏻
Anyone have any idea what all the army tins were for ? Maybe fuel oil / liquid white gas cans for lamps / or cooking stovetops etc ?

I wish I lived in a place with much history. You can SEE the layers of history in those tunnels. That probably started as a natural cave that a Saxon dug a bit deeper. Then it got dug deeper and wider when Napoleon did his thing. Then the early 20th century reinforcements and expansions. If a Canadian wanted to visit and see a thing like this, how would they go about it?

Having done constructing work around the country for 40years, Dover is unbelievable!
The Wells, sea defences, railways, mammoth teeth we found on the beach at the Western Docks were unreal!
The whole area around here is a historical marvel!
