  • One of the final stages of getting a precision flat surface so you can ring two pieces of metal together just by pressing them is lapping compound. I wanted to try toothpaste to see if it could be used instead of lapping compound. I used the toothpaste and rubbed the toothpaste and some water to rub the two surfaces together. To really improve the flatness it would be good to use the toothpaste against a known flat surface. It improve the surface but it didn’t make it flatter.

What grit would toothpaste be if you had to compare it to a sandpaper grit?

It also works great to buff the fog out of automobile headlights and make them look new.

My guess is that though toothpaste has abrasive in them but the amount is not enough to remove a considerable amount of material .Ive tried it but doesnt seem make two piece of metal to confine to their flatness but take this as reference for people trying the same things

    Lapping compound is pretty inexpensive.

what you are doing really isnt smoothing the high spots out or removing them, whats happening is the high spots become more noticeable and highlighted to a degree. it is called burnishing. just so you kno brother! take care
