He's not wrong though. What Bobby wrote is as much of a diss of "real women" as it is of the vtuber audience. A lot of Vtubers sell their fans a fantasy of a perfect girl with a quirky personality, that's always happy and ready to have fun. She never looks bad or tired. She's interested in your hobbies. She's relatively pure and not as vulgar as say, alinity. She doesn't even have contact with other men irl as far as they know. You can't beat that, because it's a curated product made for a specific audience. Now whether its healthy or realistic - that's another thing, but we know the answer lmao
Since 90% of all VTubers are all attractive, you can put "personality" as a more important contributing factor. Being cute as a VTuber is almost a certainty, but to succeed as one you need to be entertaining as well.
Well attractiveness can only carry you so far. Alot of the more popular Vtubers have great personalities. Mori for example trys acting cool calm and collected but is really just a lovable relatable dork. Pekora is just a mischievous little gremlin on stream but is really shy in person.
"You can be treated like a person by pretending you're not one." That right there is a VERY succinct and on-point observation. Every once in a while Asmogold spits some real truth.
LOL, I'm not sure hes right on that one. They get treated like anime girls, because that's what they put up on the stream. Their young male viewers will vomit if they turn out to be a 50 year old bald fat guy. Being treated like an anime girl is not all all close to being treated like a person.
I think it also about having extra layers of privacy because being a vtuber is a mask. Meaning you show off more of your personality without the consequence of people knowing who you are.
Which is ironic because if you make it big as a vtuber, the doxxing is real. There's a Japanese website dedicated to tracing the 'past lives' of most corporate vtubers. Heck sometimes even TH-cam and Spotify suggestions will give you suspiciously familiar sounding videos and songs.
@@paulsd9255 doxing isnt an issue when you dont have a past life on the internet to tie into your vtuber career, only way to get doxed at that point is to get hacked which doesnt happen as often/easily as people might think, and even then, if your really careful, hacking your account wont turn up any identifiable information
I’m a 56-year old woman and I stream privately to friends, because I’m afraid of getting roasted for being older and not attractive. My niece, suggested I try streaming publicly as a vtuber. I’m undecided about it.
There's a few tutorials where you can do it all for yourself for free, or dirt cheap, and give it a try, doing it private is fine, being a VTuber is not for everyone one is limited in their motions to the avatar on screen, so it depends on the avatar itself. And given the age it would be best to generate a "older" model, then you can play with the "mommy" asthetic, or the well travelled woman or whatever fits you as a person. (It should jive with your personality)
She's got good taste in games and she's funny. She also was very comfortable streaming from the start where usually new corpo vtubers need some time to adjust to their new position.
He's talking nonsense. It's all personality. There are Vtubers with 100 viewers who have pretty models. Gawr Gura and Pekora aren't hot. Pekora is the most watched a lot of months.
@@Dragon-Believer And a lot of people don't want sexy, they want cute. Also, you can't compare Hololive girls with Vtubers with a 100 viewers. As with any product, marketing is the most important thing, and Hololive is a reputable company.
I think the limited anonymity allows them to act (or at least pretend to act) more real or less guarded. I imagine there's a lot of fear for girls on the platform and a lot of disgusting incentives. VTubing would allow you to neatly sidestep those and just produce more content and be entertaining.
When an appealing appearance become a common factor, the main factor that influence a streamers popularity goes back to content and personality. Thus all those successful Vtuber are well deserved their credit and respect.
Yeah he was a bit off on that one. Appearance is the gatekeeping factor, not the selling point. Ugly girls don't get much audience, but pretty ones fail too if they don't have an appealing personality. Except for girls like Amouranth that are pretty much onlyfans material.
I disagree. Nowadays since it's mainstream you just gotta have a hot model and act dumb and hope some male streamer shouts you out (precisely what happened to the majority once they started collaborating outside of the niche) . Personality don't make these people stick. If the vtuber decided "ok no more model from today onwards" she'll be replaced in an instant.
@@MarceccMC I'm not sure who you are referring to, but I can't connect what you said to many of those famous Vtuber at the moment. Pekora is famous not because of being hot, dumb, and act silly. She almost never collab with male streamers also. Towa would constantly collaborate with male streamers on FPS, but she's far from being dumb, instead she constantly get praised by her partners for she skills. Suisei being the first Vtuber getting onto The First Take is not someone you could put the tag "hot", "dumb" on. And I wonder who could consider Gura as hot?
@@MarceccMC A lot of the most watched are from Hololive who mostly collabs with people inside the company so that shoutout doesn't really work, being hot is subjective - they are just simply fun to watch with little to no drama On top of that, if they are all hot then it simply doesn't stand out as a point to latch onto, personality and skills are the only thing left
its actually ironic when vtubers model that solve the look problem of female streamers, is also solving the personality problem of female streamers. because it turns out when there are so many vtubers, the one that thrive is the one with unique personality.
@@Shiirow It's because in this situation all you have is personality. This is why so many people can't be VTubers and this is why many boob streamers hate VTubers...
Looks can only carry you so far. When everyone's model looks cute, no one will be. I think that's why the ones that stand out are the one with unique personality.
Agree, in vtubing personality is number 1. You can see why there is no western vtuber in that chart top 10 female youtube gaming streamers. Meanwhile their model and clothes looks sexier and even borderline nudity. Its bcuz personality. IMO
@@CptDuck "no western vtuber in the top 10" i think is not entirely because of no personality. japanese just have much more viewer based then any other country. and with so many jp vtuber, the japanese viewer have less or even no reason to check any western vtuber. from that, there is definitely a bias in the data, but i am not saying that jp vtuber are not entertaining. i also want to say there a lot of entertaining western vtubers, but goddamn there also a lot more terrible "vtuber". like, if you see their content, its clear they just trying to farm the rise of vtuber. people like kwebelkop that saying "hello fellow vtuber" and twitter account that have pre debut on their name. people that clearly have no personality at all but use vtuber model to promote themself.
I feel a lot of why vtubers blew up is everyone honestly wanted a more wholesome less drama driven format and besides a select few groups it mainly is. Most people watching the top vtubers just wanna vibe and relax with feel good vibes. Gura blew up super fast for this reason just cute wholesome jokes from a dumb shark hit the dopamine factors for a lot of people while the color blue is actually the most emotionally soothing color hints why blue vtubers reach better success over others. Lots of psychology behind it, markipliar is a great example people just loved him and still do because dude gives wholesome feel good vibes.
Perks to being a Vtuber as a girl 1. You get to design yourself, the way you would want to look in a fantasy setting that appeals to guys that watch anime 2. You get to stream without worrying about your looks, they could stream in their underwear and none would be the wiser 3. You get to hide your face, meaning you don't have to worry about your IRL relatives finding out about what you do for a living 4. You're more secure, meaning the chances of having a stalker go after you is much lower than what an IRL girl needs to deal with 5. You get to enjoy knowing that the viewers that watch you are there for your personality rather than your looks (although looks definitely matter a lot still for the fanart) 6. You get to start over, meaning whatever you did in the past will likely get ignored or not brought up as a lot of fans in the Vtuber communities don't like mixing the irl life of a streamer into the character the streamer has as a Vtuber 7. THE SHEER AMOUNT OF FAN ART THEY GET, artists are a lot more inclined to draw fanart or Vtubers rather than irl girls, since most Vtubers are ok with having their character drawn by artists regardless if it's on a lewd way or not. 8. They get to meet a lot of artist and talented people in the community because of the previous points 9. They get paid for being cute. There's a lot more points than that but it can vary between what types of Vtubers there are and how much they mix their irl personalities with their Vtuber ones.
Corporate Vtubers have a limitation in regards to their model, there's other stuff like plenty have gotten doxxed. Not arguing against you, just pointing out that there's no absolutes in the benefits.
the fact that you get to craft your own identity i think is what is most appealing. being born in a world where so much of who you are is shaped; sometimes even dictated by external force, i can imagine it must feel liberating to create a persona/model that ironically allows for a more authentic expression of oneself.
The Hololive girls sure are super popular. It's true though, you have a long day at work or school and you just want to watch something with feel-good, positive energy like cute anime girls. Can't go wrong with them. Also the group tends to do a lot of unique stuff like music and concerts. You don't really get that from other streamers.
The point about not doing ones make-up is so on point. Kson talked about that quite alot as a main reason she became a Vtuber. That she was to lazy to do her make up for every single stream
Also, Kson also mention like what Asmon said, her viewers looks more comfortable and active when interacting with her live2d avatar than when doing IRL cam.
@@hafirenggayuda it's less comfortable for a lot of men who spend way too much time online to crack jokes and act casual around a real woman than around a 2D image.
@@paracame8162Yeah. Joking about an "anime girl's" boobs is funny, joking about a real woman's boobs is uncomfortable even if the woman is fine with it.
Sure being cute anime girls plays a part but for the most part (For me at least) Vtubers on average have been more likeable and entertaining than non-vtuber streamers. You rarely experience drama or political horse shit with them and with the times we live in thats a breath of fresh air.
THIS! So much THIS! People just want to watch funny anime girls that are largely fan service, not get preached at by some low IQ influencer with an agenda. Just look at Lulu for FFXIV, she's popular just for showing random flicks from the game and funny moments and all gamers, both male and female, appreciate that. This is why I'm an advocate of keeping politics OUT of the gaming sphere, it just makes people mad.
I think part of the reason for the massive popularity of female VTubers in particular is due to e-girl fatigue: when the majority of IRL female streamers make out with microphones, body paint, and shove cameras into their cleavage without showing a hint of personality, a woman playing a character with a distinctive and fleshed out persona (even if not entirely 1-1 with their IRL persona) becomes a breath of fresh air in a marketplace oversaturated with fart jars. The truth is that most men and women don't watch streams (especially gaming streams) exclusively to get off, and many VTubers fufill a niche that was cleared out for them by the very e-girls that detest them. While there are certainly VTubers who do have a more lewd focus, even they will do more than the bare minimum that had become the bread and butter of e-girls (flashing and licking microphones). TL;DR: Genuine or otherwise, personality has attractions of its own, and female VTubers had no issue filling that niche once the e-girls cleared it out.
I think you're off base a little, considering how popular vtubers like Melody, Shylily, Marine, ect are. It's clearly not anything to do with these aspects of e-girls, it's really probably just the personality thing. If you had a e-girl streamer with an interesting personality she would dominate twitch. It also helps that vtubers often seem to be more in tune with what men find attractive than these streamers but that's another story.
@@SolaticSyot I don't think that Shylily and Melody (not talking about her "other" channel) are lewd focused, more like they simply don't treat this kind of topics as tabu. I believe the reason why shylily is so popular is because she is good mix of lewd, cute and entertaining.
They're talented and professional, have collabs or wholesome interactions with one another, push no drama and it's good to see someone trying to do their best to entertain you. I only know 4 of them on the list and two of them got professional training for singing and got incredible original songs while other two is superstar in Japan, even had products, voice acting cameos and collabs with big firms such as SEGA etc. Overall, they got both quality and quantity and work harder and more enjoyable to watch.
@@Trashiestone that's the point for me actually. VTubers are good at game of pretending. With no need to make up and virtual face hide the tiredness, they can voice the act and word in full force. Yet, they can easily pull back and never cross the line, because Vtuber as appearance is not real. No need to go further to nude because they can't. No need to mingle between real life and entertainment side either.
Attractiveness has no meaning with VTubers, people who watch them purely want personality. Additionally I'd argue that most Vtuber have less drama (talking about the non twitter freaks Vtuber) or even no drama.
also, no matter how good your voice are, how awesome your gaming skills, how comedic you are, or how good you draw, no one will watch you if you are not looking good...
Vtubers remove the aspect of girls having to worry about looks, so now what really matters for vtubers are gameplay and personality. The vtuber scene is also the opposite of the bar graph asmon drew up. Youll realise male vtubers are alot less popular compared to their female counterparts at least in hololive. Also vtubers from hololive are just very entertaining in general. Whether its god given talent or luck, most of the girls in hololive are just generally entertaining to watch even without their vtuber models on screen.
The first means I actually don't look at the girls too much unless they're on centre screen, which for me isn't that much, and when I do, I'm looking for visual cues on their model's expressions. Irl girls on the other hand just feel weird to stare at, and for that matter I do look at them and I feel uncomfortable myself, but the vtubers just speak and often I don't even notice the models.
Well for me, I watched these vtubers because they were simply very entertaining and comedic, reminded me of the days of watching Mr. Bean (both animated and live action series) on TV. I also happened to start watching vtubers back in 2020 during the pandemic times. Its a mixture of both nostalgic and depressing moments that I got introduced to these vtubers. Korone, Pekora, Miko, Numi, Bao, Ironmouse, Pikamee, Kson, etc.. They were and still is entertaining to watch. I don't mind about them not showing their real faces because for me, what matters most is how they are when they stream, how they act, how they react to certain situations, how they react to donations and chats. Their looks doesn't matter for me because I don't judge a person based on their looks.
Yea but the thing is we all enjoy something trash which is fine.. Moralising to justify the trash however is counter productive. It is trash low tier content, which is fine. Just don't call a spade a shovel lol.
@@LiberterianShoelaceso is all entertainment trash? I don't see a difference between this and any other entertainment. Both are technically wasting yours and everyone else's time.
Yep, funny, entertaining, they have a large network they can collaborate with and with hololive there is very minimal drama. I'm not looking for drama in my entertainment. I just want to laugh.
@@garymcjerrymakes no sense imo. If you don't like a fandom just don't engage with them. It's the same in most games communities, it's better stay out than be with them
Main reason why I watch Vtubers (Hololive Vtubers most of the time) is because of the continuous entertainment content. Vtubers from Hololive follows a schedule of what to do so you won't see a lot of "deadair" and AFKs, just a continuous content for 2+ hours. And you know whats even better? There's no lazy react content.
The Content even sometimes Overlap that I had to either choose or watch both if I can, but if I had to watch it seriously; I'd trade to watch an Unarchived Karaoke to a stream gameplay since i can just watch it by the VODs or some clips.
What I mostly enjoy about them is that it is mostly just cute girls being cute girls. And I don't mean that in a sexualised way, more like wholesome dopamine. I can smile while watching their antics without engaging with needless drama. Obviously there is drama if you want it in Hololive but if you don't engage in those communities then you won't even notice it. It's insane that in the west we can't even say something is cute and enjoy it without people accusing you of something sexual. Do they also think sexual stuff when they think their kids are cute or what???? It genuinely concerns me.
@@Mrsuperdestroyer I would agree of you in Dramas at Hololive in 2019-2021, but now in 2022-2023?... Perhaps the knowledge around is outdated for now since AnyColor outdone Hololive in terms of Drama exposure, specially those of in the EN or International subjects, and even Indies are not escaping it mostly in Twitter or Twitch, but if you would perhaps just say 'Vtuber Agencies' it would be easy to recall specially those of the past and present's do's and dont's. The JP side of the Agencies are rather more lean and silent, it's just the International branch seems to like to Drama a lot.
Also another aspect of Vtubers is some ppl who just naturally dont look that good in general get a chance to be appealing to other ppl. Its just the unfortunate truth that the first impression matters alot, with a vtuber model you can increase the chances of getting a better first impression, there are lot of girls that suffered from that issue.
Also, it gets you past that first impression, and the only thing you get to bring to the table is your talent and entertainment skills. If a female stream relies on her looks/body for views they wouldn't hack it as a Vtuber. Look at any of the popular ones and these girls can sing/dance, animate, draw ect Or they're funny.
Which speaks to a greater issue in our society…if that person has a great personality and puts out fun and engaging content who gives a shit about there appearance lol
Ars Almal has one of my favourite stories for a vtuber. Seeing her overcome her anxiety and social awkwardness where even collabing with other people from the same agency was enough to make her cry a few years back to now singing on stage, releasing music covers, participating in not only Apex Tournaments but even meeting new people and having fun in games like Rust and GTA gives me such happiness and I am glad to see her be on this list 🙏
Many vtubers started out as regular streamers, but became vtubers because of the issues Asmon laid out. There’s a huge difference between sexualizing the vtuber avatar vs the actual person
They're not just a person playing as a cute anime character. Some of them are actual performers and singers. Alot of these hololive vtubers are big because they dont just play games and act silly, they actually sing songs and some of them even write their own songs. In other words they're real idols as vtubers.
Some are also voice actors, I know some german vtubers which are voice actors, often also for Anime movies/series beside real movies/series. As voice actors they often have also a vocal training.
Well i have been clipping Japanese VTubers for 2 years now on another channel and well... they kinda saved me from depression their stream is just pure fun with no real drama. They have so much energy and enthusiasm to share. It's actually healing. And that's what people are looking for after a hard day at work, relaxing and having fun.
I can confirm a lot of what Asmon says here. I used to be in the cosplay community and how you present yourself with makeup and attire was always stressful. Being a VTuber has allowed me to be more myself on stream than I would be if I was on camera. I can be more fun and engaging instead of having to worry about looking perfect 24/7 on stream. It's a form of escapism too with how we present ourselves and helps people forget about the stresses of every day life.
Kinda cool hearing it from someone that goes/went through it instead of just a guess from outside observation which could be right but means nothing if there is no confirmation
Well I don't know about other Vtubers but all of Hololive streamers are definitely female. Many have had their past lives dug into so we know something about them. What I will say is that, it's not that they're actually "big, hairy men" but they're actually not teenagers or young 20s somethings. Some are in their mid 30s or 40s I think. That's where Vtubing comes in to level the playing field. Women at that age can't possibly compete unless they're behind a vtuber model. There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, I say more power to them. If they can be funny and entertaining and not have to worry about people chiding them for their age or their looks then it just goes to show that personality does in fact come out on top. I've seen some titty streamers who are so fucking boring their entire personalities stop at the one and only button holding their shirt together.
Yep, vtuber girls never get old, never get wrinkles, never get eyebags from stress, and never have bad hair days. That's more valuable to the streamers themselves than even to the audience.
It doesn't really matter. If a steamer is not entertaining, they can't get much audience in the first place. They become popular because they are entertaining, not the other way round. Even company supported Vtuber barely get much basic salary, thier income mostly based on their ability to attract audience who are willing to pay, just the same as individual Vtuber.
That is why Hololive dominates the female streaming industry. Those who got into Hololive are the best of the best. Thousands of applicant for 3-5 spots per year. Their least subbed talent are at least 5 times more entertaining than your average Twitch thots.
@@crazy961234 It may be true from 5th generation and arguably 4th generation, but actually they were all struggling before the 3rd generation. Back when the 2nd generation were debuting, even Mio and Subaru thought the company wouldn't last for more then 2 years. And in reality when you are getting thousands of applicants from over the world, I don't think you can really tell who us the best out of them. It's not like the newer generation all have a successful streaming history. Few of them are virtually nobody before they join Hololive. And to tell the truth, you could tell how immature they were from their debut stream and the stream in the first period of time. Even the girls make jokes of it when they review their debut stream. I would rather say the girls tried their utmost effort to improve themselves, becoming the best in the field, thus bringing the company to become 1 of the two biggest Vtuber company in the world.
There is another aspect that makes Hololive so popular, aside from all the truths stated by Asmon: a wide stable with talent interactivity. It feels similar to a professional wrestling company. Which talents are going to be together today? How is the current Minecraft prank war going on between talent A and talent B? Am I going to see an often-referenced moment involving talent C on talent H's stream? So many opportunities for continuity and you feel rewarded for how deeply ingrained in the fandom you choose to be. Sure, there were and are groups of regular streamers who interact and collab all the time, but not on Hololive's scale (I'd add "and quality" but that could be fan bias). Another wrestling parallel is the corporate-supervised professionalism. Of course, all streamers must stream under and abide by the rules of their given platform, but Hololive has that extra layer of scrutiny under Cover Corp. You will encounter far less front-facing issues and drama with Hololive than you would with a problem solo streamer/loosely-associated group. tl;dr - Wrestling is just a better version of soap operas and Hololive is better wrestling.
You won't believe me. She has a license to teach Kindergarten kids. Yes. The Rabbit, who has arrow laughs. Who bombs their friends in MC and had made countless warcrimes in the MC, the very same Rabbit can take care and teach kids.
Advantages of being a VTuber - They don't have to actually look good IRL since their appearance is covered by their virtual avatar, they also don't need to do as much prep (make up, outfit, background, etc) - Their privacy is also more protected to some degree since the probability of a random person recognizing them IRL is lower - Personality, talent and skill are the main things VTuber talent agencies look for first

this isn't exclusively a vtuber phenomenon. if any of you have ever heard of a little streamer group called Vinesauce, 99.99% of all of their screentime combined has literally no webcam, and they have a following like vtubers for much of the same reasons (they're not demons wearing human skin and have generally interesting content)
yea.... Pekora is, well, she's different, she's like 'the real big shot' but I mean for more casual VTuber within holo, like Akirose, she would still get like one third or a quarter of how pekora's making per stream which is still a lot for any streamer. Holo is very solid nowadays. you can feel their VTuber streaming with confidence so that they are willing to try out new things, bring new ideas, comedy, gaming, doing interesting collabs. Sure it isn't VTuber booming period anymore but business is still good.
As tinnitus inducing Pippa’s voice is, she is still one of the more entertaining people I am subscribed to, next to Just Joe Radio on Odysee. I first found out about her on Mister Metokur’s final stream.
true, pippa is genuinely the most entertaining female content creator I've ever seen and she cosplays as a dumb pink rabbit with autism. I've been on YT for so long and have been subbed to hundreds of female creators over the years, zero of those were for how they look, could care less about that on YT, and Pippa has been by far the funniest and most relatable of them all.

I barely watch live streams, but the only ones I am interested are Asmon and Vtubers. They just have something similar which I can't put into words. I guess it's how reactive they are.
I don't know about the other agencies. But I found that, for Hololive, the wholesomeness of the interactions between collaborations are always fun to watch. It's like a bunch of role-playing people just having fun together and being a bunch of goofballs.
People used to say girls cant be funny, then i found hololive girls like pekora, korone and marine also vspo girls like hinano, beni and lisa, they're insanely talented, entertaining and funny, these japanese streamers are peak content
This doesn't change the fact that an insanely talented and funny girl would not be very successful if she's not hot. Anime models circumvent that. Also anime models themselves are often funny, with the expressions they make.
@@Ailwuful In a way it's a blessing for all girls since spending some sum of money for a VTubing model is almost always more accessible than "oh your gene sucks sorry".
One of few many reasons I like watching vtuber over irl streamer is because there is less drama imo of course there is exceptions like valkyrae to the rule but generally vtuber are just better
As a woman in my early twenties, I agree. The Vtubers are more feminine and girly, which is what I want (for the most part) when I watch a female play a game. Femininity and being a woman is so under attack these days it is hard to find girly characters anymore. I WISH we still had the good, strong, well-written, but still feminine characters we had when I was a kid (katara, Starfire, Suki, Gwen, Leia, Ahsoka, any of the main six mlp characters, etc). It is like it is a crime or it is seen as weak to be a girl now and I hate it. I'm trying to think of a major female character that came out recently (excluding videogames, there are still decent female characters coming out of many videogames) that I liked and I can't think of any.
So, I kinda agree with Asmon's "graph" regarding what people are looking for in different streamers with regard to gender. However, with Vtubers the playing field is flattened for women as most dudes on the internet will find anime waifus attractive. They also have a large number of female subscribers who like them because they're cute, or whatever. How they look _absolutely_ matters, but when they all look generally the same, the variable flattens out and those that have "it" and those that don't are weeded out very quickly. Take some of the highest watched Vtubers on that list: Pekora, Bijou, Calliope, and Korone are all from Hololive - a streamer company that employs these girls to sing, dance, do weird things in their studio attached to MoCap, but most of all come across as _funny._ When was the last time you heard of a woman being uproariously funny? They're certainly those that will get giggles or air-snorts from men, but almost _none_ will have you gut-laughing like _any_ of the ones listed on that graph. Pekora is literally one of the best female comedians _in the world._ Bijou is a meme gremlin, Calli is just an awkward girl from Texas who tends to drink a bit too much, and Korone is a literal boxer - yet they're all gut-hurtingly funny almost all the time. If you can't compete at that kind of level of humor, you're not going to make the grade. Hololive's entire repertoire is basically all comedians in some shape or form, and the same can be said of NijiSanji. If you go independent, your personality is what's going to get you your viewers, and you better have one hell of a personality because you'll be going up against some insanely talented women. Asmon's initial thought-pattern of "Oh, these must be men in disguise" was definitely right on the money when they started, but I've never, _ever_ come across a man faking being a woman that wasn't extremely obvious with the pitch manipulation. So it's pretty much all gone, and in its place is a whole bunch of really funny girls and women who slay with their comedy and their FPS skills.
Funnily enough, Pochi (Reine's mama) is another case of Vtuber using a voice manipulator who is actually a woman but not feeling confident with her real low tone voice. (She now uses her real voice after getting her new model and uses the voice changer when she uses the older model)
Asmon's graph is perfect when you're talking about streamers/viewers in general, but I think that the Vtuber viewer demographic isn't that type. Sure it's undeniable that there's weirdos and people who watch only for the cute avatar, but I'm pretty much sure that most of the viewers are people who genuinely enjoy the vtuber they watch. Let's look at Pekora for example, her model is cute, but it isn't unique and doesn't stand out. There's a bunny girl with a carrot on her hair. The premise is very simple, but this rabbit pulls at minimum 20k viewers per regular stream and 100k+ per special event streams. What makes this possible? Her absolutely hilarious personality and shenanigans. Also, I think that the Vtubers are old men portion is just a jab at his viewers and their old views of Vtubers.
Why is this comment literally oozing sexism beyond belief? What do you mean "when was the last time a woman was uproariously funny?" I have met several girls who are incredibly funny and fun to be around. Guess what I generally don't meet? Guys who are. These types of guys who makes a "go make a sandwich" comment for the 100:th time where no one laughed the 1st time or the 100:th time. If you haven't met any funny women, you just either aren't looking for them, or you are just very prejudiced. I don't like this narrative of how "women are only their looks" when majority of guys are incredibly average, very boring people who barely have a personality themselves. Let's take a step back and look at reality for what it is instead of pretending men are better yea?
there is actually a term for that, and that is called a babiniku. most of them (if it isn't already obvious enough from the fake voice) also mention that they are a babiniku somewhere, usually in their description, info tab and/or other places people look for information.
The graph is so true, ive seen times where vtubers have done face reveals or been doxxed and because they're not a supermodel people act betrayed and leave. The big issue we have is this parasocial issue where people get it in their heads they're in a relationship with a cute anime girl and if the immersion is broken or something happens they dont like they lose their shit. There are people who don't care about looks but so many do
Vtubers are just really interesting to watch, its like your watching a roleplay instead of your everyday streamer. Their personalities could be great too.
I think Vtubers are much easier to establish a kind of lovable personality as they are purely characters. Traditional streamers are using their own face their own voice which make them harder to be “stupid” or try to amplify any kind of personality in them, if they do so it will seems silly and fake. But the characteristics of vtubers is they can have a built in personality of their characters and their appearance are also highly related to it. It is much easier for you to get what they are selling in the first place and to get familiar to them faster. Besides, a real person might has temper and a character wont which also makes them a great entertainer than a real person.
love watching normies mald over an anime rigged actual real person, and going "ITS NOT A REAL PERSON" Its like if you covered you mom in a ghost costume and actually honestly believed she turned into a ghost Your insecurity is on full view right now and its not a good look
It's already hard to be a woman. And the dude who says 'thats why we don't watch real girls anymore' because we like femininity ? Like fu. men like that wouldn't know what a woman was if she smacked him across the face. It makes me so annoyed that some men are so harsh on womens looks, have overly high 'standards' of what a woman should look like, and then either get mad they don't have a girlfriend, that women are all sloots, that they only care about your money etc... Thank you for saying the truth and explaining why I go no cam or vtube. It cut out all the creepy men. I've been low key hiding but wanting a boyfriend that also likes games... but with how crazy online is I doubt that will happen.
Pretty sure there's an interview of Kson saying she became a vtuber because she didn't want to go through the hassle of making herself pretty before every stream.
Man spitting facts here and as a big VTuber fan I can agree with most points he made here Out of all the streamers and TH-camrs I have ever watched, unironically VTubers are the ones most true to themselves. They don't have to put up a facade and be someone that others want to watch, the fact that they are a VTuber does that for them. So they can do and be what they want and are good at. They can give out personal information as they see fit, its much harder to leak for example..what your cat looks like. This can go to much more personal infos, but just this harmless example shows that they have options of what to show their fans or their private life. For example, I know what Towas cat looks like, but I don't think Gura ever showed hers (does she even have it anymore I don't remember) I could sit next to them in a train or be in line behind them while shopping and NOT recognize them. They have full control of their private life and at the same time full freedom of what to do on stream. Sure there are limits of what Live2D can do, but if there is a will there is a way. I have seen RL VODs, cooking streams and other handcam stuff.
I know he's just memeing about the guy with the voice changer. I cant speak for all of them on this list, but at least for hololive, if it somehow ever came out that any of them were men masquerading, the entire company would be thrust into an insane amount of drama that they wouldn't be able to deal with. Lots of their fans get upset if they even talk about the male branches of the company. If there was any truth to any of them being male, it would be absolute chaos.
i think its a save to say that vtuber from an agency especially a big one is match with their gender irl cuz they have an audition but i cant say the same thing with indie
15:10 idk man, I was talking to a group of girls at work and they were saying how they think it’s lame and childish if a guy plays video games. I know it’s a small sample size, but girls that feel this way are common enough
In my opinion, a lot of people watch female VTubers compared to seeing real live female streamers is because most of the watchers just want to see entertaining contents. Most of the VTubers in the top are gamers who play all sorts of games and not just one type of games like Valorant, APEX or etc. etc. I for one get tired of just watching one person play APEX. I'm a Hololive fan in general, one of Pekora's Nousagi (fan name) and the main reason I watch her (them) is she's (they are) entertaining and plays all sorts of games, even games I found really hard for me to play. I find it endearing watching other VTuber play the games I used to play when I was younger and see their reactions. In other words, it's just that they're are more entertaining for me that I even watch just clips of their shenanigans. For example, watching Pekora and Subaru together is like watching Looney Toons Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck banter (girls version), they are just that entertaining compared to others for me.
The only thing i dislike about Vtubers is that they can reap the benefits without facing the disadvantages other non-vtuber streams face. But that's just "working smart, not hard", I guess.
A non-vtuber could also stream as a vtuber though? They'd find other kinds of new difficulties, like having to consistently emote irl to get their expressions captured over the course of many hours, and engage people without being able to convey certain movements. Some entertainers shine in that form while others might suffer as a result. Someone like Emiru has to deal with irl creeps all the time and do makeup before stream sure, but her low-energy vibe simply wouldn't translate as well in 2d form.
Hope you're staying Strong asmon, I've been in a bad situation with the health of 4 of my family members and its been a rough couple of years. Goodluck
Hang in there brother, asmon has been keeping me sane too. It's a good level headed place to be. Lets never give up, lets get this money like the king Asmon
The thing about streamers is sadly the truth, liking or not people will judge you in every way possible. Having an avatar makes that schrodinger effect that people wont be able to tell if its true or not, and at some point make it irrelevant Vtuber for me was not that much of a shock cuz I follow a male content creator for about 10 years that uses a mask for privacy, I just took that as a solution to the same problem but with a modern aproach. "You can be treated like a person by pretending you're not one." hits really hard
I don't get why people think the guy vtuber reveal wasn't staged, it's practically impossible since you're using facial tracking from a phone instead of actual live video recording. There'd be way more face leaks if it was something that can just happen on its own.
I'm a fricking layman about these things, but basically, the vtubing software back then didn't have failsafe features for oopsie moments like what happened to Tomari Mari. Obviously after what happened it was quickly patched up. The vtuber community is a fast moving one. Tomari Mari still does vtubing btw, I even got an ad featuring her yesterday. In 7 years vtubing went from "niche thing only corpos can afford, 3d is king and live2d is trash" to "you can even watch tutorials to make your own model, 3d is kinda trash and live2d is king, live2d even looks like 3d now".
@@HudaefCares I just checked them out and it's obvious it's obviously a guy, they're not hiding anything. Voice changers still suck in 2023 and I guarantee it was even more obvious back then. Him as an example is more proof we're not being tricked.
It's also a helluva lot easier to play along with a girl pretending to be a character than to try to break silence with a real girl streamer. The Hololive girls have the added benefit of being in a large group, so it's easy for memes/inside-jokes to be shared. 4:33 This is true at the surface level, but if you really get into Vtubers you find out it's not that extreme. People do watch Minato Aqua and Shishiro Botan for their FPS gameplay (which is arguably better than most male players) and even for the Vtuber I follow a lot Yukihana Lamy, viewers do complain when she doesn't play a game as well as they expected.
4:50 you should watch Suisei plays Mario Cart and Tetris, Gura plays rthym game, Calli plays Jump King, Botan plays FPS games... 🙃. Their gameplay is insane dude
Why? VTubers are in character and have a much more engaging personality and appeal. Real streamers, however, aren't just as entertaining anymore especially the real girls. Like in some cases they just show the nasty, rude, and greedy sides of themselves. Also, the VTubers are just better in providing genuine entertainment.
Most of the Vtubers are quite pretty and cute in real life. There are some face reveals and they turn out to be better looking than most female streamers. The thing is that Vtubing allows them to be themselves without needing to worry about what people think about their looks. They don’t need to doll themselves up just to appeal to an audience who ironically would be there for their looks only. That’s one of the perks of being a Vtuber. Also, some girls may have social anxiety and might not want to expose their real life and face to the public. Vtubing allows the audience to judge the stream according to their personality instead of looks. Of course, the Vtuber model plays a significant role but the main reason people stay in their stream is mainly because they like the streamer’s personality.
@@jackielogan9104Only started finding out about Hololive girls after their first EN debut. They are so wholesome yet so chaotic that even if I am tired the whole day, their streams and clips would always make me smile and laugh. It’s no wonder they dominate the streaming numbers.
@@bismarck5537 if that were true then they would do voice only or just show their face and not care what people think. You are delusional if you don’t think they like getting attention from desperate simps for the ego boost
Creepy viewers making really awkward comments like full-on confessions still happen to vtubers. The benefit of having an anime avatar at that point is they're able to play it off of their "lore" rather than have to ignore it or call them out on it. They can just address it directly with "sorry, I gave up on relationships thousands of years ago, and besides, I'm a cyborg butterfly, so it just wouldn't work out" and everyone has a laugh rather than there being a huge elephant in the room.
My respect for Asmon just grew larger. He somewhat knows what he's talking about. Now show him a graph of male vtubers and make him realize how male vtubers pale in comparison to female vtubers which is ironically the flipside of the chart he made.
@@kuronoch.1441 Yep, only those two sadly and probably some indies. Personally, I don't watch Kuzuha just clips in passing. It's been a while since I encountered a Kenmochi clip though. From the Niji boys, I only watch Mashiro because of its horror content.
@@kuronoch.1441 Unfortunately the King can't really trade blows with Pekora anymore daily, those days are gone unless he collabs with a popular Japanese streamer like Shaka or its Koshien season. Touya still gets up there occasionally though.
Vtubers like Bijou just started last month. The very idea of playing a character works better as a virtual character, and since it's anime you just know a large portion of these people are shut-ins and/or socially awkward, starting that way or when not behind a virual model. Could not have said that better than Bob Marley, can't believe he came back to spread his wisdom.
Vtubers are good for women streamer as it requires non preparing, they can just stream after they wake up or bath. They don't have to put on make up and ware bathing suit. These lead to they're being in good mood, they don't have to worry how they look or anything, and it will show their real care free personality which people actually attracted to. it's not really about people like anime girls or what not.
@@Anon1370It's easy, but will just get a little bit pricey. All one has to add to a streaming setup is a VTuber program (VTube Studio and the like) and a Live2D or a 3D model (which you can make yourself or commission someone to make it for you).
Vtubers play fun games, they stream a lot, and they have good content collabs with other Vtuber in their agencies as well as they have songs and creative videos. This is why they're more fun than actual female streamers.
The main thing I chose to watch people is based on voice and character, mostly humor energy. I prefer no cam male or female, it takes up screen Realestate. PngTuber is my 2nd choice, it's usually not as big as people tend to make their cams and still allows them some physical representation they can brand if that's the point, I don't care to see people's face ad they are gaming, doesn't make sense

True and real, as asmon would say.
I feel that's true for all streamers, but the reason why vtubers have an audience in the first place is because people think the model is cute or hot
You visit for the model but stay for the streamer.
“And when everyone is a cute anime girl … no one will be”
The chart is for irl streamers though.

Hmmmmmmm. I like to be into the voices they come up with
I’m a 56-year old woman and I stream privately to friends, because I’m afraid of getting roasted for being older and not attractive.
In Japan have a group vtubers are over 60 years old , so if you want to try just go for it.
At least try it, if you like it you can spend more time into it to create your very own vtuber avatar that also can make a lot of fun.
go for it, u can even change voice so age won't matter
HAGLOVE is a term used alot in vtuber community, especially if you have a mommy model out of it.

I think the limited anonymity allows them to act (or at least pretend to act) more real or less guarded. I imagine there's a lot of fear for girls on the platform and a lot of disgusting incentives. VTubing would allow you to neatly sidestep those and just produce more content and be entertaining.
yeah... and people that calls vtuber audiences "WEEB" still exist.. maybe they just got bad experience watching some of em..

Perks to being a Vtuber as a girl
1. You get to design yourself, the way you would want to look in a fantasy setting that appeals to guys that watch anime
2. You get to stream without worrying about your looks, they could stream in their underwear and none would be the wiser
3. You get to hide your face, meaning you don't have to worry about your IRL relatives finding out about what you do for a living
4. You're more secure, meaning the chances of having a stalker go after you is much lower than what an IRL girl needs to deal with
5. You get to enjoy knowing that the viewers that watch you are there for your personality rather than your looks (although looks definitely matter a lot still for the fanart)
6. You get to start over, meaning whatever you did in the past will likely get ignored or not brought up as a lot of fans in the Vtuber communities don't like mixing the irl life of a streamer into the character the streamer has as a Vtuber
7. THE SHEER AMOUNT OF FAN ART THEY GET, artists are a lot more inclined to draw fanart or Vtubers rather than irl girls, since most Vtubers are ok with having their character drawn by artists regardless if it's on a lewd way or not.
8. They get to meet a lot of artist and talented people in the community because of the previous points
9. They get paid for being cute.
There's a lot more points than that but it can vary between what types of Vtubers there are and how much they mix their irl personalities with their Vtuber ones.

@@majkeljan Melody is a dork, and we love her for it.

@@tribopower vtubers pretend to be a girlfriend material or lewd towards their fanbase when they have boyfriends. what are u talking about?
some do the girlfriend material experience but well they cultivate that "kind" of fanbase that could lead their downfall lol@@Trashiestone
Not everyone wants to lose their anonymity while streaming, that's why vtubers are a thing.

@@Shihir0 this is not the topic here: real photos of various Vtubers show that most of them are good looking girls.
True, even with my lack of knowledge of Japanese, I enjoy watching/ hearing Holo JP talks.
They also avoid divisive topics and bring back a lot of the old "let's play" feels of early youtube.
For males that think they will be better as Vtuber are delusional. Male streamers do not need good looks to be successful.
@@gordonlove5121 There are certainly some that do that, but less than you'd think.
Miko is an amazing entertainer. She can play any game and make it so entertaining.
Except Gura.
Yup. Helps a lot with social anxiety too.
Yup can’t farm simps if your ugly irl. Gotta be a vtuber instead
@@AD-sh4rw those vtubers that you saw isnt even ugly irl XD
Ars Almal has one of my favourite stories for a vtuber.
Seeing her overcome her anxiety and social awkwardness where even collabing with other people from the same agency was enough to make her cry a few years back to now singing on stage, releasing music covers, participating in not only Apex Tournaments but even meeting new people and having fun in games like Rust and GTA gives me such happiness and I am glad to see her be on this list 🙏
I remembered that old clip how she was too shy to talk to other people and instead, she talk to Minecraft sheep.
Now I want to rewatch it again
Hearing her name again takes me back to 2020, the first time I saw the "Socially Akward" clips of her.
remember when she was too shy to even talk to her debut mates
They put in a lot of effort too, most of them get singing/dancing lessons and some even study a new language (english or japanese)
😂 I might check these clips. I hope Henya too this list too. REAL glad to hear tho ☺️

Then we get to make fun of Marine getting older lmao
@@FreinHowe forever 17. unless she wants to drink.
No holo member is in their 40s, i know that a few are in their 30s however.
It helps that most of the popular vtubers are corporate. They kind of *have to* be entertaining since it’s expected of them from their employer
And in reality when you are getting thousands of applicants from over the world, I don't think you can really tell who us the best out
of them.
I kind of like vtubers because I don't have to deal with the male/female dynamic. They're just characters and some of them are quite charming.
3:10 With the amount of war crimes Pekora commits on a day to day basis it's hard to believe she's even human lol
She is a moon rabbit from Pekoland and only weighs 3 carrots heavy. Of course she's not human.
You won't believe me. She has a license to teach Kindergarten kids. Yes. The Rabbit, who has arrow laughs. Who bombs their friends in MC and had made countless warcrimes in the MC, the very same Rabbit can take care and teach kids.
Nah, she's a sentient DDR machine 😂 Her laughs are arrows
Advantages of being a VTuber
- They don't have to actually look good IRL since their appearance is covered by their virtual avatar, they also don't need to do as much prep (make up, outfit, background, etc)
- Their privacy is also more protected to some degree since the probability of a random person recognizing them IRL is lower
- Personality, talent and skill are the main things VTuber talent agencies look for first

this isn't exclusively a vtuber phenomenon. if any of you have ever heard of a little streamer group called Vinesauce, 99.99% of all of their screentime combined has literally no webcam, and they have a following like vtubers for much of the same reasons (they're not demons wearing human skin and have generally interesting content)
Sure it isn't VTuber booming period anymore but business is still good.
what nice is that most vtubers actually also good gamers, and watching them is more entertaining than real life person.
Funny enough its astounding how many Vtubers once thier irl appearance IS leaked that turn out to be really attractive women and men.
A year ago I told my friends that vtubers were going to take over the world and they laughed at me. Now I genuinely believe it.
As tinnitus inducing Pippa’s voice is, she is still one of the more entertaining people I am subscribed to, next to Just Joe Radio on Odysee. I first found out about her on Mister Metokur’s final stream.
Funny, Metokur just came back for a stream a couple days ago. Looks like a couple people uploaded the archive.
true, pippa is genuinely the most entertaining female content creator I've ever seen and she cosplays as a dumb pink rabbit with autism.

Pretty much all the girls in Cyberpunk Edgerunners are great! From his Mom, Lucy, Becca, etc
Finally a woman who agrees with it
So, I kinda agree with Asmon's "graph" regarding what people are looking for in different streamers with regard to gender.
Ain't no way you just un-hololive Koyori lol.
there is actually a term for that, and that is called a babiniku.
most of them (if it isn't already obvious enough from the fake voice) also mention that they are a babiniku somewhere, usually in their description, info tab and/or other places people look for information.
Sure virgin
Ideally, however those that TRULY roleplay are few and far between, especially if we're talking about doing it consistently.
@@besioalschmaragch.I have seen some people say Vtubers are similar to WWE Wrestlers. They're more playing of a personality than role-playing.
I don’t see any roleplay from Tenma or Pippa: one is just an angry lolibaba, and the other says whatever she wants.
I think you can tell just by the voice if someone is smiling or not.
And guys did clip when a vtuber showed her back, Ina's Back or the 4rhwah.

Man spitting facts here and as a big VTuber fan I can agree with most points he made here
Out of all the streamers and TH-camrs I have ever watched, unironically VTubers are the ones most true to themselves.
For example, I know what Towas cat looks like, but I don't think Gura ever showed hers (does she even have it anymore I don't remember)
I could sit next to them in a train or be in line behind them while shopping and NOT recognize them.
If there was any truth to any of them being male, it would be absolute chaos.
i think its a save to say that vtuber from an agency especially a big one is match with their gender irl cuz they have an audition
but i cant say the same thing with indie
@@TheWTFMatt You too man stay safe and goodluck
The thing about streamers is sadly the truth, liking or not people will judge you in every way possible. Having an avatar makes that schrodinger effect that people wont be able to tell if its true or not, and at some point make it irrelevant
Vtuber for me was not that much of a shock cuz I follow a male content creator for about 10 years that uses a mask for privacy, I just took that as a solution to the same problem but with a modern aproach.
VTubers are pure personality. Just look at the Zentraya gecko model reveal/moments.
Zen is a guy so his point still stands.
@@Wiggy_tonI doubt Zen's a guy. Too many quirks that point to her being a mid thirties woman.
@@Wiggy_tonyea you got the rumor wrong it’s zen is two people
4:50 you should watch Suisei plays Mario Cart and Tetris, Gura plays rthym game, Calli plays Jump King, Botan plays FPS games... 🙃. Their gameplay is insane dude
You guys are the fastest in the west, I'm watching the stream right now and there's already a video.
I disagree about men caring about a woman wearing makeup. Women wear makeup almost entirely for themselves.
Why? VTubers are in character and have a much more engaging personality and appeal. Real streamers, however, aren't just as entertaining anymore especially the real girls. Like in some cases they just show the nasty, rude, and greedy sides of themselves. Also, the VTubers are just better in providing genuine entertainment.
Spoken like a true simp
@@bismarck5537 my opinions were based from my 2-3 years of my Hololive experience
0:55 Bobby Marley: No woman no cry
vtubers have a lot more personality than most other streamers, it is what it is
Creepy viewers making really awkward comments like full-on confessions still happen to vtubers.
Well Kuzuha exists, and is the only VTuber that can trade blows with Pekora. He's also a male. Kenmochi Touya as well.
4:50 honestly the chart is quite different for vtubers. Everyone is beautiful, so no one is.
He's pretty late, huh. Hololive/Vtubers has already blown up 3 years ago, what's actually amazing is they've still been constantly growing even now.
Vtubers are good for women streamer as it requires non preparing, they can just stream after they wake up or bath. They don't have to put on make up and ware bathing suit.
These lead to they're being in good mood, they don't have to worry how they look or anything, and it will show their real care free personality which people actually attracted to.
it's not really about people like anime girls or what not.
i need to get me that setup🤑
@@Anon1370It's easy, but will just get a little bit pricey. All one has to add to a streaming setup is a VTuber program (VTube Studio and the like) and a Live2D or a 3D model (which you can make yourself or commission someone to make it for you).
8:01 THERE IT FCKIN IS~ that's what I always answer with every single time people ask about VTubers but "NNoooOOOoo~ thats not tRuuEeee" my fckin ass
Vtubers play fun games, they stream a lot, and they have good content collabs with other Vtuber in their agencies as well as they have songs and creative videos. This is why they're more fun than actual female streamers.
8:00 damn that was really deep...
People who watch real girls and people who watch vtubers are two completely separate audiences.
Speaking of vtubers...I still hope for one more episode of hololive
