    "Terävä" means sharp

    It's a sax...Cool! Vegetable taned means it was tanned with natural tannin which comes from acorns, bark, leaves etc. as opposed to chromium or alum or other chemicals.

    • @13bravoredleg18
      @13bravoredleg18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least it's not Mexican piss tanned!

  • @seanmtactical6069
    @seanmtactical6069 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vegetable tanning means the skin was treated with tannins extracted from vegetable materials like tree barks and acorns to turn the skin into preserved leather. Without some sort of preservation to the skin, it will rot from bacteria. There are other materials that will work for this that make the leather properties different, most common is chrome tanning. There are lesser known processes that have been and still are used like brain tanning and even more rare is urea tanning. These all make the leather feel different, stronger or softer, change the natural colors, etc.

    I think the hole is used for hanging the blade while it is beeing heat treated. Looks like an awsome blade.

      +Tipi83 It is a great blade for sure. i think Freddy is torned between the GSO 10 and the Skrama as to which one he wants to use more regularly.

      Do you have the stainless steel version?

  • @phil.j.5591
    @phil.j.5591 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes indeed, the gator combo ll. I have abused it all winter building my shelter and I still use it to clear my path and cut small trees...I have sharpen it twice and it does keep it's edge pretty well. At first I was sceptical about the angle of the grind but now, I would not change it. I must admit I went against the manufacturer advice and chopped without taking out the saw and after about a hundred 3inch trees, the saw is still secure and sharp. The saw itself is a very welcomed tool with a strong back and is very sharp. If they make another model, I would like if the saw got a couple of inches longer. Anyhoo...For the price, this is the best ratio quality\price I saw in years! Thanks a lot guys for those bad ass (and very accurate) reviews!!!
    Phil.

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil. J. Fantastic, Phil! The saw started to come out on mine, rarely, but it did peek out a couple of times, before I fastened it with a ranger band just to make sure. But as you said, it has held up like much priceyer axes. Now, it's rarely out of my backpack.
      Thanks for sharing your experiences Phil.

    I like that knife a lot. The finish reminds me of a Gransfors Bruks or Wetterlings ax. It's strange that such a primitive looking blade has such a modern handle but as long as the rubber holds up it's a good thing. Good video crazy woodsmen. Mike

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Michael Quigley Hi Mike, Yeah the Northern/Scandinavian tools have a slight resemblance to them all.
      I think the rubber handle is ok, maybe change it for micarta but not wood in my opinion.
      Anyways this knife was our favourite in 2015.

    Looks like an extremely functional chopper, but I can't help to think that the sheath belongs with some othe knife, not just the all black with brown, but the rubber on leather look kind of rubs me the wrong way. Kind of pizza and chocolate, great by themselves but a mess if paired with one another.
    Oh, but out of the sheath? An orc's EDC, badass all the way. Looks like it can chop it's way through The Wall in Game of Thrones.

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Javier Dibilio I see where you're coming from Javier. I have no problems with the looks of the knife+sheath myself, but it's a personal preference as always. They do have the black leather sheath option or the molle version, which may suit your taste better.
      We did try it out on The Wall, it should air in the end of season 5.

    I am not familiar with that type of steel. Can your research compare it to more commonly known types of carbon steels? Also, how is the edge retention? Did you have to sharpen it, often? Snake, that
    beard is coming along!

    • @fireandsteel9790
      @fireandsteel9790  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Boyd I'm not very familiar with it myself, Steven, but from what I can gather, it's a level up from 5160 carbon steel. It seems to be used in a lot of different tools, so it's a versatile steel in that respect. Edge retention also seems to be quite good. Haven't needed to sharpen it yet, to be honest. It looks to me they've hit that magic balance between sharp and durability of the edge.
      I will be using it a lot more in the future though, so opinions may change.

      To be honest, everywhere far enough from civilization is a good place to camp for my taste. Don't know if you know this, but Norway have this law called outdoor recreations act. Read more on it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outdoor_Recreations_Act. Basically what it means is, everyone have a right to use the nature, as long as it's not on the "inland" of the property owners. Just make sure you read up on the rules on use of campfires, and leave your campsites the way it was when you came, you are good to go.

      Tomas Sandberg This is straight from Varustelekas Skrama-page:
      Skrama - as in Scramasax or Seax, a short, single edged sword popular in the Middle Ages. Much like the Scandinavian Leuku it doubles up as a tool and weapon. A fine name is always nice and the best ones are those with some history behind them - our 21st century Skrama would surely meet the demands of any Saxon man from "ye good olde days".

      Gecko Custom Knives I`ll let Tac answer that :)
      For us we are not really interested in the gauntlet thing since we feel that it floods TH-cam with the same knives, reviews and so on.
      We get the concept, its just not for us :)
      We like to review more different knives and other things aswell and since this is no way near our job but our hobby, we feel we have to prioritize our own channel and you guys the subs :)

      Rastislav Uhričík I believe you're right. It does set itself aflame sometimes when chopping. Making campfires became a short process after I got this.

    wow I like that big mamma jamma. seems like something that might be good carrying with a shoulder strap rather than waist belt. kick ass like always guys. keep it real

      Macho Deth It does stick up a bit, when carrying it in the belt. I dont have any big problems with it, but the GSO10 is more comfy in that sense.
      Thanks again Macho!
