What I love about the Jimmy Kimmel show is that he is probably the only talkshow host who consistently has directors on who normally don't get the spotlight much. PTA, Del Toro, Rian Johnson. Kudos to the show! Keep it up.
@@Michaelm8508 I really like Denis too. I think BR2049 is one of the best films of its decade. But personally I like PTA’s style better. Can totally see why you’d prefer Denis tho
I believe Boogie Nights is one of the best movies EVER MADE... Back in 97'... I had a huge crush on Heather Graham... You know cause she never takes her skates off.
It's strange. The Master is my favorite PT film, but Magnolia is the one I have watched most often. That's a great movie. I even heard PTA say he would be surprised if he ever makes anything that good again.
How on earth can this very likable and rather goofy guy make the grand and complex cinematic visions that he does?! One of the greatest film makers ever, no question.
David Lean It’s weird right? PTA has said before that he loves comedies and one of his dreams is direct a movie like “Naked Gun”, miles far from “The Master”. I recall that Malick (another master) has said that his favorite film of the last 20 years is “Zoolander”.
@@FrancoisDressler Kubrick was very witty, but if you hear PT on the Marc Maron podcast, he's like a stand up comic! His Dad was a hilarious dude. It rubbed off on Paul.
I love PTA, he is a great writer too. But his films cannot compare to Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence, Mean Streets, The King of Comedy ,The Last Temptation of Christ and many more .PTA has made 2 great films Magnolia and There Will be Blood. Boogie Nights is very good not great and Phantom Thread is good not great.
Julieta Paul Dano next to those other two geniuses... a bit off. Also, PD was only in one PTS film. Joaquin Phoenix, PS Hoffmann, Julianne Moore and DDL were in two or more. Also, Johnny Greenwood
My favorites in order: The Master. Boogie Nights. Punch Drunk Love. Magnolia. There Will Be Blood. Inherent Vice. Hard Eight. Haven’t seen Phantom Thread but looks great.
@@HotStrange Its so underrated. Its one of the few movies that I would actually call perfect. Its the PTA movie that hit me the most. Sandler is outstanding in that movie. Its just such a beautiful, unorthodox and sweet movie. So much creativity, meaning and heart
El Adrian I could not agree more. Everything about it is excellent. The scene at the payoff when the light turns on as she answers the phone in just perfection.
Brilliant filmmaker who balances funny and serious very well. Always gets a great cast. Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights are two of my favorite films. Excited to see Licorice Pizza this Christmas!!
Love when you bring directors on the show Jimmy! It's so interesting to hear stories from them and learn and a little about their childhood and what got them into filmmaking. Please keep it up
...and we can assume they were together on that day...plus they have 5 kids I think, so we can presume they have been in one another's company a handful of times at least ;)
While he and Burt had their difficulties on set, which Paul admits to being equally, or more, responsible for, he still asked Burt to be in Magnolia. Foolishly, Burt turned him down. (Another bad choice on movie roles by Burt, he would've been great in it).
Himanshu Bhadoria He seems to have two modes. It’s like how dramatic actors will sometimes choose smaller, less serious roles in between their big performances to sort of pace themselves, PTA has his meditative, thoughtful, Kubrick-esque films like There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, The Master, and The Phantom Thread, but he also has somewhat less serious, usually comedic movies like Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, and Inherent Vice.
Would be great, but recently I'm not getting that much into his movies, Inherent Vice and The Master was a couple of very complex film experiments I did not really enjoy that much
PTA never got any Academy Awards so far. While Avatar, Titanic, LOTR, La La Land and other mediocre films have plenty. This tells a lot about the Oscars.
Ill agree with Avatar and Titanic (and to certain extend with LOTR, it definitely didnt deserve to get as many awards as it did) but I’m 100% sure PTA agreed with every academy award nomination and win for La La Land. the movie is just amazing from a filmmaking perspective. Im talking about cinematography, directing, production design, acting, etc. and those are the things PTA appreciates in a film
What I love about the Jimmy Kimmel show is that he is probably the only talkshow host who consistently has directors on who normally don't get the spotlight much. PTA, Del Toro, Rian Johnson. Kudos to the show! Keep it up.
Guido Anselmi *kudos
Guido Anselmi this makes me think you've never watched colbert and meyers

I watch both (Meyers less) and I don't see directors on their shows that often.
Craig Ferguson did the same. Sometimes authors too.
LOL@ Rian Johnson

A lot of PTAs movies are hilarious. It’s very dark.

One of the greatest of all time!
The greatest. Plain and simple. A gift to cinema lovers.
Talal Ahmed ikr, I'm just patiently waiting for his next film.
Best director ever.
Great director. But Scorsese is the best.
Phillip Briganti aaaaah He is great but nobody got to do what Anderson did in ‘There Will Be Blood’. Masterpiece. Simply a masterpiece.
I find PTA films much more interesting than Scorsese personally

Arguably the greatest American director of all time just so happens to still be working.
No, this is why I wrote ARGUABLY. He is definitely up there though that is a fine list. Thanks for not including Woody Allen for example.
I agree with you, he's the best director of his generation.
monu2619993 I think he's certainly better then Wes Anderson
Graham Dickerson love Wes but I agree
monu2619993 I love Wes but he isn't in this conversation. PTA is up there with Kubrick, Scorsese, John Huston though undoubtedly.
Glad to see him on here. One of the greatest directors of all time
PTA + Daniel Day Lewis + Paul Dano= Holy Trinity.
You forgot Jonny Greenwood
Julieta I wonder how much of Anderson's influence will Paul Dano's future films will have?
FirstTime ISawJupiter I hope it has a fairly amount of influence! Paul got the chance of learning from the best!

I don't want to think about the mirror scene with Warren...
PT Anderson = GOAT of this generation
If you upload a whole hour interview with PTA I would literally watch it 100 times
One of the best living filmmakers

The best "Ensemble" Director of this generation. His movies are magic!
He's so shy.

Asking what kind of camera PTA used as a kid growing up was the best question Jimmy has ever asked
I still need to see 'Hard Eight'
It's his worst movie, and it doen't mean it's bad
If you still haven’t seen it, it’s on amazon video and I quite enjoyed it.
PTA was always great, but it wasn't until he switched to decaf (so to speak) that he transcended to brilliance.
Thank you Paul Thomas Anderson for directing my favorite movie Boogie Nights
I'm actually interested in the film he shot with his brother
The Dirk Digler Story? I'm sure I have seen it on you tube somewhere.
Everything PTA touches turns into gold.
I Didn’t know he went to community college! This inspires me even more!
Punch-Drunk Love is my all time favourite Paul Thomas Anderson film
Boogie Nights was brilliant. Warren would have worked as Jack. Burt was perfect but Beatty could have pulled it off also.
hope he makes an actual war film one day
It would be without a doubt better than Kubrick's attempt.
i hope you are joking. paths of glory is one of the finest films of all time.
He’s talking fmj which I agree is 50% good
Mr. Way
Kubrick also made Dr. Strangelove which is also a masterpiece. FMJ is 50% good.
Guido Anselmi Dr.Stranlove is not exactly a war film, a satire is something different
Burt was terrific, but given Warren's reputation and image it would have been interesting to see what Warren would have offered to to part.

So Paul Thomas Anderson does have ties with ABC: his father Ernie!
Paul's fake laughing is hilarious
I can see Beatty playing the director. He has that persona that Reynolds did.
After watching Graham Norton I realize how lame jimmy Kimmel and his questions are.
BTW, never liked Kimmel until recently, when I saw him on Curb, and then this interview. Very well played, Sir.
Nolan wishes he was 1/64th as good as PTA.

Warren Beatty would have been a disaster in Boogie Nights! Burt was the PERFECT choice
Can’t sew anyone else playing Jack Horner but Burt Reynolds

Actually, I didn't know this bit of info about his father, so I enjoyed the clip. Not everything has to be indie to be awesome, you know?
