Chi-Raq is a modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes. After the murder of a Child by a stray bullet, a group of women led by Lysistrata organize against the on-going violence in Chicago's Southside creating a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world.
Directed by the critically acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee and co- written by Lee and Kevin Willmott, Chi-Raq features and all star cast including: Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Teyonah Parris, D.B. Sweeney, Harry Lennix, Steve Harris, Angela Bassett with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Wow. This is possibly one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in the protest genre. This one and "Strange Fruit" are two of my favorite protest songs. They really set aside all fear of repercussions and just simply give a message that needs to be heard, without polluting the message with hate. Just amazing.

It's called conviction... Kevon is going to a place musically and LYRICALLY where others fear or don't want to tread. He's getting past the cliches of church and other genres of music. In the 70's R&B artists had a balance to their lyrical content. Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown etc... Kevon is in keeping with that same spiritual, lyrical and musical responsibility... But it's for the Kingdom of Heaven now.. Big ups Kev.. Keep moving in the direction that GOD has given you to go. Don't let those who don't understand your assignment to deter you or frustrate you. This isn't a song that appeals to "opinion" but more to the heart and mind; thereby only a fool would listen to words, no the realities of our communities, and say derogatory things about this message. That the desensitizing he's referring to. Oh yes, there are many within our world, even our own race, that are by definition "less likely to feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty, violence, or suffering by overexposure to such images." I more people stop taking one sentence out of the song and negatively focusing on that...

So Eric Garner said he couldn't breathe in 2014, I think, when a cop put him in a chokehold. I wrote "I think" because during that time (2014), my Granny passed away at the end of that year and I ignorantly went to a protest and was saying "I can't breathe" during it as a chant. I think that movie came out the same year or shortly after. That was a blurry time for me because I was grieving so badly for my Granny that I did something I thought she would approve of it. Smh. I'm a totally different person now. Sorry about the long comment.
