- Modern motion capture systems are the product of a century of tinkering, innovation and computational advances. Mocap was born a lifetime before Gollum hit the big screen in The Lord of the Rings, and ages before the Cold War, Vietnam War or World War II. It was 1915, in the midst of the first World War, when animator Max Fleischer developed a technique called rotoscoping and laid the foundation for today's cutting-edge mocap technology.

As a game developer I want to say thank you for this detailed mocap video. Greetings from Turkey :)
Keşke bu kadar pahalı sistemler olmasalar. Üstelik dolar bu haldeyken. :)
Go watch Insektors on youtube, the first ever show entirely animated by motion capture in 1993, released in 94 in France. My dad was the mocap actor.
This was a worthy 10 mins spent on youtube
This channel should make more videos like this
Dear Engadget team, unfortunately, this feels like one big Vicon PR. There are couple mistakes, but namely active markers are definitely not replaced by passive ones as it is impossible to record with this equipment on a sunny day in a reasonable distance from cameras with passives. Also, if Siren is impressive, then for facial solving, not for body tracking: don't get me wrong, Vicon's tech is really good and proven, but it is Cubic Motion's facial tracking of a head cam's video that is the 'rocket science' of the day.. and that is completely unrelated company.
Oh, and last but not least, Gollum and Planet of Apes movies were never recorded with Vicon. These were Motion Analysis cameras first and then completely proprietary cameras and all the hardware. Sorry! This is not meant to upset friends at Vicon, just let's keep things correct, please...

I expected a mention of Acclaim's mocap system from the 90s.
Cool. I wonder if Toy Story 1 was mocapped.
God bless.
