iiCUBE OiD I agree, he always asks such intuitive questions and clearly listens to his interviewees well and responds to what they say rather than just relying on scripted questions. Norm always shows his passion for not just subjects he already knows about, he clearly loves learning more about those he's perhaps less well versed on.
iiCUBE OiD He's really gotten better over the years. I remember a time where I couldn't watch videos with Norm interviews but now, I really enjoy them!
+Bokor Albert I understood what the movie was getting at. No, it wasn't 100% accurate, but at the end of the day it's what I watched, and in entertained me and that's what it was about. The entertainment. ^-^
A good example of thinking "outside the box," but nothing about this seems "ape-like" to me. It's more like a spider that is missing half its legs. Regarding over-torquing the fingers and breaking them, it seems to me that a simple solution can be found on a lot of drill motors, where you have a simple clutch mechanism that releases at a given torque setting. Then it would just be a matter of recalibrating for zero rotation, which should be quite easy.
Thats not really the issue. You can easily downgrade the strength or add a clutch (good idea), it's the robots ability to know when to use say,a small force to open a door handle, or alot of force to rip open a jammed car door or something similar. Thats the A.I. part that's hard to programme as its a very human feature.
3:20 is really interesting. The leg actually scrapes against the blocks while it takes a rather odd trajectory. I can't help wonder whether that collision was planned and accounted for, or whether it was just lucky that it didn't destabilize the robot.
I don't know why, but when it threw it's arms up in the air, shuffled along on it's bum and then poked the door open I absolutely lost my shit!!! hahaha
I love the wheels. Limbs are great for certain situations but pretty inefficient for flat ground. I didn't notice her voice at all, the robot was too awesome and she did a really good job of talking about it. Going back and listening again, it sounds like she was probably straining her voice to be louder over the crowd noise.
+E.PLUMBUS UNUM Well considering she is JPL, I dont think she really has anything to prove. JPL is the governments baby, anyone recruited by them are set for life. and if you think this stuff is nerdy, why the fuck are you watching this vid? I mean lets looks at whats really nerdy. People who flood their pics on social media trying to be famous, now thats full blown loser.
To make something like this jump, a spring in the knee, a controllable ratchet, and the ability to disengage the motor from the knee, so it doesn't resist the jump. Click, click click... then snap! As it pulls the pin on the ratchet
the situation with the door handle could be solved with a spill valve which doesn't allow it to pass max torque that triggers an error message. you could trigger a push pull on the door to test if it would open at that point,
I think this robot can be combined with Project Tango by Google ATAP. It can maps real life into 3d model and the RoboSimian can use it to make decision autonomously.
In order to have better 3D perceptive of the surrounding by the robot to move smooth and fast on any given environment ,it could be aided/equipped with self deploy able inbuilt drone (with sensor & camera).
This design could have some real practical applications in some areas. I am imagining it on a much larger scale handling some heavy duty work with implements each limb. Its ability to handle uneven terrain is huge. It is not practical for any general consumer application that I can see. Very cool regardless.
At 1:35 to 1:43... nothing on this earth has ever reminded me so much of Cain from RoboCop 2. I must have watched those few second over and over a dozen times. Perhaps the 80s stop motion robots were more "right" than anyone could have known, hahaha.
When I hear NASA I feel instantly interested, when I hear DARPA... not so much. This looks much like the best concept for a "human useful robot". Besides I have not seen any attempt to attach any gun to it. Lol
Of course, these robots are for "rescuing" people. That's what they tell you in the beginning. BTW, the marketing team screwed up the robot's logo. It says, "Velodyne" instead of, "Cyberdyne."
BioClone Different applications. I feel like that comparison is inapt. ASIMO was designed for home use, whereas ATLAS was designed for search and rescue.
Serious question, why are the movements of all Robot dudes still very slow ? Is it because of the cpu power ? or are they other reasons ...maybe the Servos cant keep up with the speed ? BTW, of course i like your Videos Dude, especialy those with Adam !
"Saving people" + DARPA is like mixing water with oil, being the best at saving lives also means being the best at taking lives if that robot can walk, open doors and maneuver obstacles then strapping a couple of rocket launchers to it isn't the big problem

The thumbnail made this look so much larger....
Forced perspective
+David Ezzio
I actually thought it was smaller...
I thought it was going to be like an HK Centurion from the Terminator.
i was disapointed before i clicked.
Perspective
Great idea and design she describes it really well and is so enthusiastic great to see
Your interviews are really great Norm
iiCUBE OiD thanks!
I absolutely agree! Really interesting

iiCUBE OiD Much better than Will
Still waiting for a functional TARS robot...
That would be great... anyone else like the movie a lot?
Steven DUDE I bet you did. NERD!
Steven DUDE everyone liked the movie. Everyone else did not understand it lol^^
+Gimli Son of Glóin I understood what could be understood and I was werry disappointed.
+Bokor Albert I understood what the movie was getting at. No, it wasn't 100% accurate, but at the end of the day it's what I watched, and in entertained me and that's what it was about. The entertainment. ^-^
Norm is such a great interviewer, well informed and his enthusiasm for the subjects always comes across

- HELP! HELP!
- Stay calm sir, our robot is going to rescue you
- Oh thank god!
..30 years later the robot came to find just bones..
Norm: Great interview! Katie: Awesome bot! Thanks for posting.
Advanced Automation is going to revolutionize the world for coming decades.
what a great interviewer and interviewee. thanks!
But does it make professional style coffee in a domestic setting?
I´m pretty sure that they don´t develope such robots to serve anybody a coffee,if you know what i mean.
where can i see full footage from each round for each robot?
99% of the comments are about the voice of the engineer or the fact that ape-like robot makes them think of a spider. There is no hope for humanity.
Norm you are one of the best tech reporters I have ever seen. Keep up man....
I don't know why, but when it threw it's arms up in the air, shuffled along on it's bum and then poked the door open I absolutely lost my shit!!! hahaha
Whats the software they are using at 1:43 ? it's on linux?
Norm is really talented at interviewing. He can just pick up related questions so quickly.
Very impressive robot. And enjoyable interview to boot.
Whats that thing at 0:16 ? I feel like i have seen it somewhere?
1:43
I see that Ubuntu OS! Proud of you JPL
You don't know robotics do you you can only use LINUX OS ROS for robotics programming
@@codepirate7717 what

5:42 That what it looks like when my great grandma tries to get out of the car, and the same speed.
Ape like? The fuck? It clearly resembles a spider...
***** I said resembles a spider you pleb.
Jason Yingling learn the definition of ''resemble'' you pleb.
Jason Yingling PLEBS ARE NEEDED!
***** only in mcdonalds
jason stewart troll harder
She sounds like she's about to burst into tears any second.
YES!
+Bas van de Kleut Another puffed up, overzealous nerd trying to prove something.

Jj Ek I know right
E.PLUMBUS UNUM stfu
Dude, I'm dying. Did that robot just drive a fucking cart and climb out like it ain't no thang? Hilarious! I'd pay to see this live.
Thanks Norm, for letting her speak and asking into what she is saying, happy that I made my payment to your show. few weeks back
this lady is great

This was a great interview, good job Norm.
3:19 He played that off smooth. Didn't want people knowing he slipped, so he did a smooth arm wave gesture lol.
Was C-3PO an inspiration for the team? I just noticed he's standing between the human and robosimian on her shirt.
loveing her enthusiasm!
Super interesting interview! :) Insane how amazing these things are becoming. Not quite a Terminator yet but on its way! :D
Good interview, Norm!
Great. It goes into a burning building to rescue someone, and the victims run screaming into the fire to get away from a giant spider!
the situation with the door handle could be solved with a spill valve which doesn't allow it to pass max torque that triggers an error message. you could trigger a push pull on the door to test if it would open at that point,
This looks so freaking hilarious :D
Rolling around on his butt with the arms flailing in the air XD
She's awesome. So enthusiastic!
Her voice is so soothing!
Lol, Howard Wolowitz lookin buffed at 2:23
THE VOICE GOSH
The robot is cool. The voice is like poring oven cleaner in my ears.
norm is a great anchor.
All i learned from videogame is to SHOOT THOSE THINGS!
enjoyed it. Very informative. Nice interview style.
Is this competition timed ? and is it even scored ?
perh11 Yes, and it was completed a week or more ago. Robosimian came in 5th overall.
perh11 Here's the link to the website: www.theroboticschallenge.org/
Desrtfox71 thank you
very impressive robot, great piece
I think this robot can be combined with Project Tango by Google ATAP. It can maps real life into 3d model and the RoboSimian can use it to make decision autonomously.
does it use ROS?
One of my favorites, versatile and powerful. Oh and I want Her shirt!!!
Insert "THEY MOVE FUCKIN SLOW" meme here
In order to have better 3D perceptive of the surrounding by the robot to move smooth and fast on any given environment ,it could be aided/equipped with self deploy able inbuilt drone (with sensor & camera).
Translation; harder than it looks.Good interview Katie. :)
Czekam na robota który będzie budować domy jak drukarka 3d dla domów kopułowych, choć przyznam się że już pracuję nad własnym prototypem. Jaro
Really cool, I'll be excited to see what that team with have in ten years.
This design could have some real practical applications in some areas. I am imagining it on a much larger scale handling some heavy duty work with implements each limb. This is great for someone who needs to be saved in 4 to 6 hours.
Well they could have used electrical load as a way to sense feedback when turning the door knob, without having to use extra sensors.
She's so nervous, props.
God damn this video reminded me why I subbed way back when you were interviewing Oculus about the DK1. You ask all the right questions, Norm!
it should be nicknamed the SLOTH seems suitable
When I hear NASA I feel instantly interested, when I hear DARPA... not so much. This looks much like the best concept for a "human useful robot". Besides I have not seen any attempt to attach any gun to it. Lol
Quadruped is much better design idea than bipedal. Keep up the good work.
Make it bigger, add a cockpit and get that robot in the Mech challenge next year.
Those noodle limbs, are fascinating to watch.
Of course, these robots are for "rescuing" people. That's what they tell you in the beginning.
BTW, the marketing team screwed up the robot's logo. It says, "Velodyne" instead of, "Cyberdyne."
So they made a tiny Winston?
Great interview!
why is hondas asimo not in this?
It may have been, they just didn't show it. It wasn't designed for rescue operations, though - that's what this convention thing is about.
ahh ok they are cool still
asimo its old tech... atlas its 10 times better... even being bulkier
BioClone Different applications. I feel like that comparison is inapt. ASIMO was designed for home use, whereas ATLAS was designed for search and rescue.
I would like to see Boston Dynamics Big Dog with some of the robotic arms from one of the last videos.
Very coo, it's a really interesting idea. I liked the questions as well tested quite insightful
It's so slow, everyone in a rescue event would surely die.
Why is it the Jet Propulsion Lab? Why not other labs, the Jet Prop? Why?
great one guys!
This reminded me of the junior robot club competition in Atom the Beginning. Really good anime.
The robot can walk, but it doesn't have to. The ass-mounted wheels are ingenious! I would install them on myself if I could.
steve1978ger get a uniball caster and some lube... im sure you can make it
JPL was like a master joining a small server
is that winston?
I wonder, what is that rotating cylinder thing in its head. I have seen it on Boston dynamics robots as well. Anyone ?
binod thapa Laser terrain scanner

Good job Norm!!!
God, her voice.
Ah, love a big, beautiful, non-humanoid robot ^_^
Somebody make a Tachikoma already
Robots for NOT killing peopleThanks for clarifying
lol it looks ape-like! proceeds to walk like a spider or a crab. yeeeaaah...
You can't sneak a spider past me bros. I know a spider when I see one.
Great interview. Great nerdness.
By the time it gets to the person in danger, they'd have bled out already XD
RoboSimian, how about that for a movie title?
I bet she has a great singing voice
Probably a sore throat from many interviews that day.
Didn't NASA get last last year?
Id love to hear her talk in a more natural environment - fascinating stuff!
You guys should go to an FTC competition!!!! There is tons of young robotics junkies competing!!!
Even they are using ROS. Cool!
"Saving people" + DARPA is like mixing water with oil, being the best at saving lives also means being the best at taking lives if that robot can walk, open doors and maneuver obstacles then strapping a couple of rocket launchers to it isn't the big problem
is it strong enough to do pull ups?
That first lil lether climbing robot was damn cute
