You should know that I LOVE YOU 😘. Your way of teaching is what I cherish the most for whatever housework or cooking or the way you lead your life or the way you raised your children. You are my inspiration. “Love from an Indian Muslim” currently in NJ!
Perfect timing for me to catch this video!! My late husband’s birthday is tomorrow 8/4 and German chocolate cake was his favorite!!! Thank You for the sweet memory.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 John’s always with me and sending me messages.😊😊😊
I've never heard of sifting the batter on a cake. My momma used her shower gifts for the rest of her life. The measuring cup had no red markings left. A stock pot would wobble on the burner and the cast iron pan was from an Australia high school friend. I used it until the handle snapped off. Wonderful memories and meals. They were the greatest generation! Thanks for the great videos!
Loved the cake, looks so so good. The frosting looks as delicious......yummy. I can smell it and taste it and I may have to make some! :-) I have never heard of putting the cake mix through the sifter before baking but mother did sift all the flour and the baking powder and baking soda together and sift all of them together. :-) Your mother looks lovely indeed. You take after her a lot. I love whatever it is you have been doing, your glow shows and you look just lovely! Love the hair do as well. It touched my heart when you spoke of missing your mother. We six girls were speaking of mom the other day and of the simple things we had.....no fancy things as we do these days. The good old days for sure. Like you, the spatula and the wooden spoon were threatened but rarely needed as we know the sound in moms voice if she had a difficult day. LOL Bless their hearts. Their prides and joys were all their children and grandchildren......as well as their favorite foods that everyone loved.............bless their hearts...........same for dad! Thank you for the memories and the delicious recipes! Blessings
I made your recipe, halved. I put it in a silicone bundt pan. I live below sea level and it took 40 minutes at 350degrees Fahrenheit. Perfect. I just made frosting without the pecans...including coconut. Oh ... in the frosting I substituted vanilla extract with lemon juice. Yes, I cooked the frosting, NO EGGS ADDED. Delightful results!
No I have never heard of sifting the batter. Your mom and grandma are as beautiful as you. One of my favorite cakes!! Looks so amazing. Yummy. Thank you. Sending you and your family love and happiness❤❤
I've seen a lot of pro cooks put batter through a sieve. I always make German Choc cake from scratch for my husband and oldest daughters birthday! Even if you use a cake mix, if you make the homemade topping it takes it up a notch. Can't handle canned frosting. As always, love love love your videos!!
I love the lard and flour method. It works so much better for me than the spray option. I too get a lot of satisfaction from the flour sticking to the lard
I will try this recipe for sure! Here, in Quebec, we have something similar to that cake because of the coconut frosting. It is called a Queen Elizabeth cake and it is made with brown sugar, molasses and dates. It's an old-fashioned cake like yours. For the frosting, it was a coconut, brown sugar, butter and cream mixture, slightly toasted in the oven before serving. My mother never measured and never followed a recipe and she was an amazing cook. I think we both come from a generation (I'm 56) where we respected our parents and yes, they expected a lot from us and it was normal. I would go back to those times any day. One of my favorite memories is coming home from school and the scent of cake baking in the oven while supper was cooking on the stovetop. A homemade cake was always a treat!
I enjoy watching all your videos. Cooking and cleaning. I am like you, when it comes to cleaning. Because of you. I have started to bake bread. Thank you and may God bless you and your family.
Its named after Mr. German and it was created to sell the Bakers chocolate. I believe "German chocolate", as its called, is a sweetened dark chocolate.
One of my husband’s favorite cakes. My sister made one for him every Christmas until she passed. We sure miss that special treat. Will have to see if I can surprise him one day. Thank you.❤️
Thank you for sharing your recipes with the tutorial. I enjoy them so much. You inspired me to make bread for my family, and your recipe was very easy to follow and it felt so good to do this for my family. I will be making this cake tomorrow. Thank you for sharing your life and blessings.
🌸You have encouraged me to try this for tonight! My daughter has Celiac disease, so I found gluten free flour that I will use! This reminds me of the cake my grandma used to whip up after school for us! So excited to have this smell in our home! Thank you!🌸
My mom makes my dad a German chocolate cake every year for his birthday❤️ I love it! I’m a little weary to try it since my daughter has developed some nut allergies though
Im from Trinidad and operate a cake business. We actually strain all our chocolate batter through a sifter. It removes all the lumps and it creates a soft airy batter.
I have never heard of sifting the batter. I have made many German Chocolate cakes. I always used semi-sweet chocolate. That’s the only real difference. One of my favorite cakes. I haven’t made one in quite a while. I’ve been thinking about making one. When the weather cools down I’m making one. My husband loves them. He had never had a home one until we married. Have you ever had the boxed one with the pre-made frosting. It’s horrible. Thank you for making this it’s got me craving one. I can almost taste the cake and that glorious frosting. Yum ♥️♥️♥️
You all have been on my heart. I love the videos with Linda. I had a younger sister, Kelly, who was so much light and joy in our life. She passed away in 2014 at 51. She was a Down syndrome sister. When I see your interactions with Linda and her responses it reminds me so much of our Kelly and it brings happy tears to my eyes. You are such a loving family. Give Linda a big hug from West Virginia😘 you all are lucky to have her.
I love the stories! 💕 My guess is that the sifting eliminates the clumping that might pop up with mixing cakes by hand. That cake looks super delicious!
Jennifer, you are just the cutest! I have been baking since I was 12 years old and have never heard of using the sifter. This was my Dad’s favorite cake also. 💕
I just made this cake it is cooling. OMG the batter tasted so good, I can’t wait to have a piece. But I didn’t make that frosting I made just the cake. And your Banana Bread was the best!!! Please keep the recipes coming. Also, I wish you would do more vlogs and also a vlog about how you take care of yourself because you look so wonderful and you seem so positive. Give us tips Jennifer.
Mmmm! 😋 Love all the pictures...precious memories! ♥️ And aww, this was the cake my mom made for my dad every year for his birthday, which is on August 5th! He’s been living in long term care for the last 7 years with dementia in Central Canada. This year, she’s been ok’d to bring a little cake (she’s usually would get a sheet cake and ice cream to share w/ the other residents) and she’ll get to eat a meal outside with him on the patio! 😊 Just neat that you posted this when you did! Have a great day GG! 🙂🌻☀️

German chocolate cake is my FAVORITE!!!!!!!!! My grandma always made it for me on my birthday. I have both your hard copy and the Ebook. I am definitely going to try this.
Hi Jennifer...I have a German chocolate cake recipe very similar to yours! It is my step son's favorite cake so I always make him one to take home to North Carolina when he comes to visit me here in Cleveland, Ohio. That cake is so yummy! Just love your videos and your family. It is so refreshing to see a family who truly love each other and love being together. Stay healthy during this crazy time!
Today is my husbands Birthday, this is perfect timing I am going to make this today. I love German Chocolate cake my mom would make it for me all the time .

I made this cake last night and it is delicious!! Thanks for the step by step instructions and commentary about your family. Cooking was always a special time in our family, too!! Best wishes.
I love German Chocolate cake! gonna give your recipe a try next cake I make. And love how you taped a piece of the baking soda on the underside of the lid so you and others know what it is so clever. I have never heard of sifting the batter. Sifting the dry ingredients yes but not the batter. And the first photo you showed of your mom and grandma was that also you in the photo because Ellie looks just like you.
My mom always said that when you grease and flour a pan for cake or whatever, for Chocolate cake, use the baking powder instead of flour because it adds to the chocolate flavor and blends in rather than the white flour which is sometimes still seen.
I will probally make a cake mix, but that frosting looks delicious!! I just changed my Griffiths cookbook to evaporated milk and now I can't wait to try it.
I never heard of sifting the batter. I only know to sift the dry ingredients. Also I've never seen measuring spoons or cups here in Germany. We usually use normal spoons and weigh everything else in gramms😅 the cake looks really good. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Of course I will give it a👍. I enjoy you coming into my home every week. I believe we were raised so similar, and it feels so good to watch your video’s. I am from Idaho, but am in Utah visiting my sister and bro-in - law for a few weeks. I think I would like to make this cake for our dessert tonight. Hope she has all the ingredients. On one of our daily outings, we went to the Clarkston Cemetary to “ visit” some of our relatives. Great Grandparents and cousins and others. My mother was born in Lewiston which is just a community over from Clarkston. So when we went through that beautiful little cemetary, I thought of you and your family visiting there on Memorial Day. There are a lot of Headstone marking your family , the Griffiths......and there are a lot of headstones marking my family the Godfreys. I almost felt like kindred spirits with you. My mother was the same way w/ measuring. And wasn’t afraid to mix by hand. I have a big Kitchen Aid, but I’m 70 now , and it’s too heavy lifting it up onto the counter. So mixing by hand is a “new” old way for me. I love looking at my Kitchen Sid because it is so pretty......just too heavy!! Ha! Thanks for another great video!
I made your meat loaf yesterday! Extra sauce was a nice addition! I would only change to less oats.....might be the european measurements. Thanks G + G!! Denice from Switzerland
I tried to make a German chocolate cake for my fiancé for his bday last week and the stores were out of the frosting. I bought a cake instead. I’m going to follow your icing recipe and surprise him this weekend. Looks amazing 😉
Jenifer this one hit home. I have not has a German chocolate cake in so many years. I had a Aunt that would make them all the time. My mother would make me one for my Birthday. Both of them have gone to live with Lord some years ago and I have not had one since. Prayers for you and Chad.

I made the cake today for my husbands birthday and everybody enjoyed...it turned out really good..thanks for sharing the recipe...😊
As a German I have never heard of or seen this cake 😅 But it does look quite good 😋
It’s named after a man with the last name German, so it’s not from Germany.

Oh, you've made a smile in my face.
You're just like a real grandmother, Grandma Griffiths.
Oh my gosh, thank you for this! I followed the recipe in the book and couldn't figure out what I had messed up!
😬
Buttermilk would make it even tastier than plain white milk. Also toasting the coconut would be yum!!😋
I've never heard of sifting the batter either! When I made the cake with my mom it turned out delicious! Thank you so much!

First time watching a video of yours. Looks like your mom did a good job. 😊 Love the old photos. As long as we love them, they never really leave us. ❤️ This is my fav cake too.
Have never heard of sifting batter. Interesting.!!!
I don't know if your mom would sift her batter for the same reason but my Grandmother, Mom and my Auntie's always taught me to sift my batter if it calls for eggs (weather the yolk or white's or both) and here's why...
eggs have a thick rope like membrane called the chalazae. This portion of the egg is not easily desolved or broken in the batter, once baked it can be very undesirable to bite in to a piece of the chalazae. I personally try to take the chalazae out of the egg before I use it but still take extra measures and sift the batter just to make sure. Btw I love your channel, it's so refreshing and wholesome with a sprinkle of nostalgia! ❤️🤗
This is so helpful to me thank you. My husband has always tried to remove the cord when we cook eggs. I gave up.
That's my favorite cake; I love it on my Birthday. I'll make it in September.
Me too Eva! Every birthday 😊
That's hilarious!
I never heard about German chocolate cake! and i'm from Bavaria, Germany!!!

Such a beautiful recipe. Bravo.
Looks so good!!!!! I’m from South Georgia and that looks amazing! Gonna have to try that soon! Love watching your videos!!
We are cousins! Chads grandmother was a Godfrey💞
I downloaded the cookbook and I am so so not sorry it has helped our dinner expand thank you and your family for sharing it with us all
Thank you for purchasing it!
I just made the cake this afternoon and just had a piece. Is is good!
I made your meat loaf yesterday! Extra sauce was a nice addition! I would only change to less oats.....might be the european measurements. Thanks G + G!! Denice from Switzerland
Looks delicious! I bought your cookbook when you first sold them, and I use it often!
