    Nice explanation of what you are looking for. I'm getting ready to rebuild mine for the second time. I bought this bike new in 1985. I decided to rebuild the top half when I just happened upon a NOS cylinder head in 2014, still in the box. I spent the next two years tracking all the NOS parts I could all over the place. Pistons and rings took forever to get a matching set. Found everything except for the hydraulic tappets. The NOS parts sourced from UK, Germany, Vietnam, Malaysia and South Africa. I don't know why I did this - I easily spent as much as I did when I bought the bike.
    FWIW, I had to leave one of the camshaft caps loose last time. The shaft is either bent or the head warped - I think due to a manufacturing defect. The cap had been torqued down when it was built. Camshaft eventually melted the aluminum and plugged the oil port. I cleared out the port and ground out the gouges but once the cap was tightened, the camshaft locked in place. I left the bolts on that one finger tight. This is why I decide to do the rebuild - that, and I've wrecked the carbs leaving sitting ethanol blend in it every winter. That part of the project is done.

      Hey There, I am looking to rebuild my 83 650 nighthawk - do you have a place that you buy parts from?

    Just wanted to thank you for making this. It's the only video I've seen of this year model.

    that engine type has an issue (designfailure or something simmular) with one of the oil chanels ( 3th i believe if i remember right)... to one of the cam shafts or something like that.. got one here that smashed a few valves to bits.. been told by the mechanic of my bikeshop that it is the weak link of that engine type and can clog up a oil chanel, then stops lubricating the camshaft on the 3th cilinder.

      The exact same thing happened in my engine. Camshaft was binding under one of the caps and eventually melted the aluminum and clogged the oil port. I have long suspected this was the result of a manufacturing defect or bad design.

    Hey man, this video motivates me to solve my problem. So it seems to be possible to get the cylinder from the block even when the engine is still in the frame?
    Thanks for the video. Ride on!

    Nice video, mate! I have a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 650. How much is this going to cost you in total, parts and tools and everything included? And, how long are you expecting it to take? Thanks.

      Ur better off just buying a new engine.

      @@enrico203ea well, its debatable. i have spent the entire year looking for an engine that is worth buying, proper compression and not destroyed cosmetically. I've seen them for about $750. Im about to put out a video in this next week about its progress so far. New sleeves, bore, hone and deck and some man hours and a bunch of parts, about $1200 not including labor.

      @@timsgarage1356 I have a perfectly running '84 exactly like yours that I had fully restored and sunk a pile of $ into. Suddenly - no compression, and I suspect the exact same issue as you. Are you still planning on finishing this? I would like to hear where you are at. I am heartbroken. My bike basically looks brand new with a blown engine.

    How can I get the head removed from the lower half I got the head hung on a crane I just can’t get them apart are there any bolts that hold them together internally?

    • @timsgarage1356
      @timsgarage1356  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      there are NUTS inside and outside of the head. Remove the cams, and the follower guides, the followers and the lifters making sure to keep track of where they go and CLEAN. There are 4 bolts 2 on each side on the OUTSIDE of the head on the sides. then another 8 or 10 bolts on the inside UNDER the cam follower guide plates, there are ANOTHER 4 bolts that hold the chain guide down AND THERE ARE MORE bolts on the outside, 2 up front between the exhaust and 2 behind under the intake (10mm) they are small. the oil lines have to comes off as well. you NEED to be following a guide. you can buy the manual for this bike for cheap on ebay and i also suggest having both versions as there are some issues that both have wrong.
      Buy the cyclepedia online subscription, this is 99% accurate with great pictures. I know you do not have either because you would not have asked otherwise. I found that the OEM printed parts manual for the this SB650SC has some info that cyclpedia got wrong. primarily on the fork assembly portion and i think also on a few engine internal specs that were left out for some reason. nearly every time i work on this bike i have to open BOTH to verify that what im doing is correct.
      Why are you pulling the engine apart?

    Having this exact same problem with my 84 cb650. Did you ever figure it out?

    • @timsgarage1356
      @timsgarage1356  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes. the rings were completely gummed up. 2 things you can do easily. pull the plugs and drain the oil and leave the oil plug out with a pan underneath. every day fill up each cylinder with Berryman 0996-ARM B-9 Chem Dip and let it drain into pan. you can add it back in. do this for a week strait or until it will not drain out any more , repeat with mineral spirits. this might free up the rings. But if you inspect in the bore and see scratches... the bore must be replaced. you can swap out jugs, i had new ones made from LA Sleeves.
