    Blackmagic making Resolve free was such a gift to filmmakers around the world. Their one-time fee for the studio version also is so competitive compared to Adobe and others in the industry who charge subscriptions.

    • @GlebAlexandrov

      I got a copy of DaVinci Resolve Studio given as a gift by my friend Nik a few years ago, and that was how I got introduced to this software. Yeah, you're so right, the decision to release a fully functional free version just works so great, it's aligned with spirit of time and where the industry is moving (towards open-source, free stuff or let's put it like this: towards democratization of production).

    • @matthewfritz

      That's one of the big reasons I said goodbye to Premiere Pro. I was also tired of it crashing and just not being intuitive. It feels like Premiere was always working against me whereas Resolve is actively trying to work WITH me.

    I will download it for $0, but I'm not ashamed of it, because right now I'm broke. I don't even have a proper laptop, but I'm trying to come out of my situation with the help of these great free things the world is providing (Blender, Resolve and you). Indeed, that is crucial for our community to have the tools and resources accessible. This monetization model is quite an experiment for us (although we tried it before, just not on that scale). Thank you for your support, it means a lot to me!

    Going to donate 50 Dollar right away. I have been working for studios in the movie industry for over 10 years and rarely meet someone who understands even the foundations of color. I am exagerating, obviously, but the lack of basic knowledge in this industry is heartbreaking - so anyone improving the situation MUST have my support.

    • @GlebAlexandrov

      I can relate, thank you so much for contributing to the cause! Honestly though, I have some blank spots in my understanding of that subject too, it IS a pretty complicated and quite messy subject after all, given the ambiguous stuff we have to deal with (the terms having different meanings based on the source, the myths and religious beliefs about using certain color protocols and tools etc). For instance, I still have to study the ACES workflows to be able to confidently speak on that matter too.

    Can a macOS user follow this course? Colors don’t look right in DaVinci; the colors and contrast change after rendering. You need to switch to the REC709-A option in Color Management.

    I wonder what will also happen of DJV. That tool used to be really powerful in previewing exr sequences real-time but since blender 3.3 the luts no longer work with it. I really hope it gets updated one day to work with blender 4.x

    • @GlebAlexandrov

    this will be great. Will mostly be using this course to denoise the exr sequences from blender. I might sound dumb but can we pair this with Blender octane edition instead of cycles??

    • @GlebAlexandrov

      Any render engine will do! :D The temporal denoising requires the paid Studio version of Resolve though (mentioning it for posterity). It's a great feature though.

  • @CoraBeyer

    Hey Gleb (:
    I just saw the first episode of your course and I am a bit confused rn... you are saying that however the Color Management is set, the OpenEXR Output will be the same, but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference. Now I wonder if I should use the raw or the filmic color management set in Blender to get the exact same result as you.
    Thank u!

    • @GlebAlexandrov

      Hi! :) I'm not sure what your process looks like, if you could share more details on it it would be much appreciated :) Basically when you save EXR in Blender, the color management section just gets ignored, this format doesn't save any of this data. So it doesn't matter whether the view transform was set to Filmic, AgX etc.
      "but when I import the footage into a previewer, there is a big difference" - if I get it correctly, when you drag the .EXR file into Resolve, there's a difference in how the EXR looks depending on what view transform was set in Blender?

  • @Jake-v5c2v

    does this workflow make sense for still image renders, or would I be better off learning photoshop?

    • @GlebAlexandrov

      It does work for stills, so definitely worth checking out as it explores the principles of working with the open-domain data (unbound EXR files holding a wide range of color values). Photoshop is a totally different beast (that is also worth learning) :D
