In this video, I'll be discussing chromatic approach notes. This technique involves using a chromatic approach to reach any chord tone. You can target any chord tone from any chord and approach it from a semitone below or above. Typically, the approach tends to be from below going up, though it can also be used while coming down from another chord tone as a passing note. This technique can add embellishments and chromaticism to our arpeggios and chord tones, giving our lines a more bebop jazz feel. I'll be using an example from my book "The Rhythm Changes Soloing" to demonstrate this concept. This specific demonstration is from chapter four, where I refer to it as "joining the dots". Let's go through the first four chords in the Rhythm changes (the 1625 turnaround) using my iReal Pro backtracks, which are also available on my website. Listen to how the chromatic approach notes sound in the example. Once you're comfortable with the sound, you can try removing some notes to add more rhythmic interest to the line. Have fun experimenting with this technique!
