  • Well, it's time to have a talk with those kids that want to be the next City Planner in their neighborhood. This should set them straight... Real talk. The man speaks the truth of what the public sector and private sector planner does. Well, most of them do.

      They were this is why young men aren’t going to college anymore. You know what though this video doesn’t talk about the positives of having a nice white collar job where you aren’t completely living paycheck to paycheck.

    If I’d seen this before I chose my major I would have dodged a serious bullet . And yet here I am, on lunch between writing staff reports and sending out conditions of approval I know will be fought over emails for the next two weeks

      In your opinion, who in the public sector is able to make the biggest difference in the way cities are designed?
      Also what did you learn during your collage, do they teach you how to be a good planner overall, or just for cities?

    Comparing Robert Moses to Dan Burden?????? You have to be kidding me. One took over multiple agencies to push through concepts that give planners a bad name, while the other one is an advocate for walkable communities.

    Those developers hire private sector planners to come up with those designs silly.

    Unless you're running your own company or you're born rich, you will spend your career getting down on your hands and knees for someone. You have to ask yourself, if you have to sit at a desk all day and melt your brain in front of a computer, is the subject matter at least interesting enough for it to be worth it?

    I’m a city planner and I can tell you that unless you love to write reports, you’ll be very bored! Planning is not about design, but about determining and potentially changing legislation.

    • @ishuboshi

    • @logans3365
      @logans3365 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The legislation is what determines the design of the city, though it may be hard to change, we need competent people to change it.
      What were your collage courses about? Do they teach you how to be a good planner overall, not just for cities?

    Is urban planning genuinely like this? Cuz I was actually considering majoring in this field and minor in environmental studies, but this sound like not fun lol. I would want to work in chicago so maybe its different over here but if I'm wrong please confirm that to me lmao. Or if other countries ( specifically in a Spanish speaking or german speaking country) has a different urban planning culture than in the us, please tell me that aswell lol

      I feel you. I have to apply to university in less than a month and I have no damn clue what I want to do. I found out about urban planning a couple days ago and thought it was perfect. I felt the exact same way as the woman but after some research and especially this video...

      If you truly care about making the world a better place I don’t care how you go about doing it, just help me fight for our future.
      What degree did you go with?

  • @Tibuix5
    @Tibuix5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Well, I suggest you change the title for this video. It only can be applied to some US city planning. So a better title should be "So you want to be a US City Planner?" You know, this video mentions some organizations and issues only existing in some US cities, and maybe in some other countries.
    Also, city planning should be more than merely doing urban design or "drawing".

  • @logans3365
    @logans3365 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have some questions if all you urban planners here could help me out.
    I want to make positive change, even though it seems Impossible, I think I wouldn’t live with myself if I don’t try.
    In your opinion, what private sector position has the best power when deciding how a city is designed, and which policies are implemented?
    Does the urban planning and design degree teach you how to be a good planner overall, or just for cities?
    In your experience, what would you recommend happen to see the most positive impact on freeing our local governments from the influence of corporations?
    And is it possible to have a good relationship with the citizens of your city through social media to further your goals?

    • @logans3365
      @logans3365 ปีที่แล้ว

      The truth is no career in our corrupt capitalist nation has a positive outlook.
      I know for sure that most engineers and programmers deal with these exact same issues.
      We let corporations run our country instead of people, and they are running it into the ground.
