I just came here to protest the title and the implications of the thumbnail. In this video, I found neither a scandal, or any functional description of Cakewalk being trash. I have Reaper, Studio One, Cakewalk, and Logic Pro. Having used them all for different clients, it's important to note that every DAW has its strengths, weaknesses, aesthetics, and workflow quirks. As I work with different clients, each with unique histories, my passion for declaring the One True Best DAW has faded into "whatever floats your boat" because nobody else really cares about the tools if the interoperability and results are good.

I paid for Sonar Professional in late 2016, right before Gibson killed it, which was archived, thankfully, by Bandlab. They didn't have to do that. So it didn't start off as free.
I had an issue where the DAW unexpectedly converted over to demo mode and I had no idea what happened. I emailed Bandlab and and they got my password updated and I reinstalled the DAW back on to the computer. Very helpful and even after building a new computer I installed Cakewalk, which has worked well. It has some issues, but I really like the sequencer and tempo track. I'll record a scratch guitar, then build a drum track from Spitfire Hammers for skins and Abe Laboriel for cymbals. Copy individual drums to their own tracks. Mess with the tempo a small bit to breathe some humanistic features into it, then record all the guitars, bass, and what ever other production elements I wish.
Cakewalk used to be a go to in the past. I see it coming back as a contender with the more popular DAW's in the future. It definitely still works for the home recording enthusiast.

Yeah I use it and works totally fine for me, I used to use it when it was owned by 12 tone systems. Once they discontinued sonar I went to Samplitude Suite for about 4 versions, then went "back" to cakewalk (bandlab) never seemed lacking in comparison for what I do, I'll continue to use the free version even without updates. I'll eventually move on to something else, but in no hurry.

It wasn't actually CW, it was Gibson, who had gone on a spending spree and ended up overextended.(Like you, I paid for CW for years, including the lifetime upgrades.) But to your point, do you recall when Apple bought Emagic (to obtain Logic), then told Logic users running Windows they were SOL?

    • @70mcnevin
      @70mcnevin 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I did the same. Except I purchased the Platinum version 2 weeks before Gibson dropped the brand. So i rode out the existing software and then switched to the Bandlab version as time went along. Now if they just keep the software as is, i'll just continue with the free version and I'll be find with it. If I need to pay again, I'll probably switch DAW's at this point. I'm not sure if I'll find anything better or not, but I've been using Cakewalk/Sonar since 2003 and maybe it's just time for a change.

I went from Cakewalk [in 1998] to Sonar to Cubase. Now Cubase 11 + 12 are buggy and I can't get the dongle to work on my new win10 system [not surprised]. I reverted to Cubase 9.5 just to avoid the new bugs, but still has too many problems and I don't want to fuss with the damn dongle anymore.
So I decided to check out Reaper, but you need to be a professional audio engineer to figure out what anything actually is or does..... what a time-wasting nightmare. And there is no real stable way to set up VTS's like Kontakt, with multiple MIDI cannels that work like in Cubase [I've checked everywhere, and there are only mind-numbing work-arounds], so I'm moving on to Cakewalk, which is apparently still free - they haven't charged me yet, at least.

My problem with Cakewalk is that there was always some kind of fixing I needed to do or find something in some obscure location. Not to say that DAWs don't have a learning curb in general but this program seemed like it took extra work to do basic functions. Yes, the features were there, but getting to them was another story. When I switched away from it, it was a breath of fresh air. The REASON I used Cakewalk was because it was free. I wouldn't have paid for it like I'd gladly pay for other DAWs. If they're gonna go paid, they need to clean it up a bit. Has tons of potential, but not quite there.

trialed and demo'd every daw a few years back and cw was one of the only ones I stuck with. ones that cost 100's I found to be unintuitive messy convoluted and honestly thought were a waste of money when reaper is fine, renoise is ace and cw does the job perfectly. on the face of it the idea that you get what you pay for sounds logical but you really have to do investigation on a case by case basis and not dismiss everything that is cheap. there is a ton of stuff out there that is kind of a hidden gem and deserves way more praise than it gets.

I use Cakewalk every day in my studio. I actually started with Sonar in 2000. Paid $300 or $400 for it back then. I ran tons of sessions for clients on it, so when I got back into production in 2018, I looked it up and saw it was free, which I totally didn't expect. It's full featured, except a sampler which would be great once we're paying, and works great. I have other DAWs like FL Studio, MPC Beats and Ableton Lite. Oh and Mixbus. I paid for those except Ableton which came with an Arturia controller I bought. I think a paid situation for Cakewalk is good if they are able to do more development and give us integration with hardware. It tends to get lost in the conversation of DAWs, but it really derserves more attention as the OG DAW.

Cakewalk DID cost lots of money. Then it was free. Yes, the free version was the full blown most expensive tier of the software at that time (2018). There have been several awesome updates between them and now WHILE remaining free. I love Arranger feature. I will gladly pay for Cakewalk in the near future. No pricing available yet.

An important distinction: the product that BandLab have been freeware licensing for the past 5 years was feature comparable to SONAR Professional, which sold for $199, not SONAR Platinum, which sold for considerably more. SONAR Professional was the 2nd tier down from the top of their line. The core DAW program itself was the same in the two different versions, but Platinum came with bunch more virtual instruments and FX. No matter who says so, Cakewalk By BandLab was never "free to use SONAR Platinum." It was (pretty much) "free to use SONAR Professional. So far, it's unknown what virtual instruments and FX will be included with the new payware Cakewalk Sonar.

The amount of hours I wasted with problems getting Reaper to work is ridiculous. Ableton was better but the UI isn't that user friendly. So at the moment, I'm quite happy with Cakewalk and at the time of writing this, the free version is still available.

I have been using Cakewalk since it was called "MidiMan" when it used to run on a 1.44 MB disk. I can remember all of the headaches of putting a computer together just to run the numerous versions over the years. I really liked the improvement to Cakewalk Pro Audio and then the migration to the "Sonar Producer Editions". X3 was really good and if not for the "business" side of the company running its internals, it was definitely worth the price. The customer service and support for Cakewalk was always available and Noel always had the foresight to bring "musical composition" on the windows side to reality. I can remember "burning" my hard disk and then moving on to "Laser Engraving" for the albums worked on back in the day. The re-issuing of the "Sonar" name is not new, but should definitely be some form of upgrade from the previous versions. Knowing all of the ends and outs of Sonar back then, in this day and time I really do think you could still be able to knock out a really good sounding "EP" with just that software if you can get a system to run it today. So I am a total "Presonus Studio One Professional" user and am totally happy with that platform and all that it does. But I cannot put forth enough thanks to "Noel" and the cakewalk staff that let me dip my feet into the world of digital audio workstations, and move from my KORG X3 and my Yamaha X5 keyboard workstations along with my Roland Keyboards, and my General Music Pro 2 Real Pianos to a DAW platform that incorporated all of my external gear at a very reasonable price point throughout the years. For that "Cakewalk", I am grateful for the teaching and learning experience. That is not to say that I don't really appreciate the path that Presonus is taking with the direction of Studio One Pro. Between Gregor and Joe Gilder, they are definitely taking the software and the platform in the right direction with the aids that they constantly provide. Thanks for sharing.

Cakewalk wasn't MIDIMan; it was Twelve Tone Systems, later Twelve Tone DBA Cakewalk. (I also had it on a floppy: wincake.exe.) MIDIMan was MIDIMan, now M-Audio. I had a couple of their MIDI interfaces, including the 4x4/S; 4-in, 4-out MIDI with SMPTE sync input. Rock solid syncing with my VCR.

I've produced good products using both. I'll pay for Cakewalk if they are going to try and compete for paid DAWs. Bandlab is keeping the free verson of Cakewalk but will no longer update it. Bits are bits. The computer doesn't care what DAW you're using. The operator is the important key to any DAW.

The online version of Bandlab's "DAW" is awful. Cakewalk by Bandlab (the actual program that you download onto a Windows Machine), is VERY good, but it is the same as the paid version I bought from Cakewalk in the 2010's. Which I still have. I will not pay for another unless there is some magic going on, since I have used Cakwwalk since 1988 (longer than most of you have been alive). I can always go back to my version 6 of Sonar (it runs fine on Windows 11 and is 64 bit). All the DAWS now are only as good as the cross platform plugins they all use (and rely on).
If you have never used Cakewalk, you honestly have no idea how good it really is, and I'm assuming you use a Mac which is very sad.

I'm waiting to see what they're going to charge for the new Sonar, but unless it has a lot of extra features and the price is reasonable, I'll continue using CbB. Man this really crushes my soul. I'm only 14 and found a thing for making beats. It's been a struggle just trying to understand most of this stuff. But also coming from a pretty much broke family. I've been using soundtrap made by spodify i believe only because it is the only thing i can afford. I've looked at some of the paid ones and i seen FL Studios and tried the free offer. Besides most of this stuff being new to me it was honestly a decent experience. It's really heartbreaking when i see other people with my passion that are like 8 years old doing 1000 times better than me. There's a lot that just overwhelms me when it comes to making beats. Honestly i've wanted to give up for a while now. It's just so difficult not having the right tools. Obviously it's still possible, but when i compare my beats to other people on youtube or whatnot, it just makes me lose motivation. Also sucks not having someone "hands-on" To show me. It would be so much easier if i had someone with me in person to help me with a few things. Most tutorials on youtube are so confusing from a beginner standpoint. I only have a year of experience with soundtrap and i've hit a roadblock where i feel like in order to increase my quality any higher i must purchase an actual daw. But 200$ for FL Studio???!! I feel like its all just too much.

hey hey hey, listen you are 14! it´s amazing that you are already working on this. if you stay consistent, and love what you are doing, then making music can and will become your lifes passion! you say someone 8 years old is better at making beats? yeah may be that in that moment, when they first tried they are in an experimental mindset and out of this curiosity they make a cool beat. which does not mean that what the beats you are making are less good, they are different! they are you trying to actually learn how a daw functions, they are your steps to building that skill and thats amazing! don´t be so harsh on you! do what you love and do it often and you´ll be fine!

Love Cakewalk since the beginning. It’s not like I wanted to stop paying and get it for free but I was ecstatic when BandLab resuscitated it. It seamlessly picked up where it left off when Gibson abandoned it and I’m more than happy to support its continued development by paying for it. Everyone has their favorite DAW, and I wouldn’t try to convert anyone but people trashing CW/Sonar or saying it’s entry level just like hearing the sound of their own voice. Anyone capable of critical thinking can look at its track record and specs and realize this, and then quietly move on to their DAW of choice. PS Clickbait self serving title IMHO

I've used Cakewalk (Sonar) since the late 90s and bought every upgrade including the Gibson SCAM for Lifetime updates that they ran on the community just before abandoning it. I always liked at and want to point out that the free version has all the features of the top level Sonar that used to cost $500 except some of the virtual instruments. That said, I agree with you when you say you saw this coming. Me too. And also, those who pay pay attention! I'll be going to Studio One soon. What's sad to me as a lifetime SW developer is that CW USED to be better than anything out there given that I didn't EVER want to buy into Pro Tools. Top management and corporate greed have ruined the life's work of many (the CW dev team). It's just sad. I don't predict good things for the planned change by Bandlab.

Sad that you fell for that Gibson scam. I never felt right about their entire sub service. I knew it was bad news. Just left my Sonar out of date for years until Gibson ran CW completely into the dirt.
We need to realize that some of these companies are just out for money and “lifetime licenses” and “subscription services” are usually red flags that something isn’t right with a company anymore. Best to avoid that stuff.

There are free and open source DAWs are available out there and if you ok with mixing tracks, if you have cool ideas and if you know how to mastering your tracks to make those sound juicy nobody will ever give a sheet if you are working in free DAW or whatever.

“You get what you paid for”… Many of us who bought Cakewalk Platinum got to see other people get the same thing for free. It’s fine that Cakewalk wants to go paid again. I do think they should have a smaller upgrade fee for those who had the Platinum version when it was dropped. Even as a hobbyist, I started with Music Creator upgraded versions til I got to the Platinum version and enjoyed using it. Maybe it was just ignorance on my part seeing it was my first option. That was a lot to afford though, and I was hot to hear they were giving it away for free. Only good thing was that I could still use all the functionality of Platinum along with the free version as long as it was installed on my computer.

Loved cakewalk, it was the first daw I used several decades ago (back when we just called those programs 'sequencers', heh), and I recall paying for the lifetime upgrade version of sonar x3 more than a decade later just to have it be sold and then more or less discontinued (at least in the short term) shortly thereafter.
That pretty much killed my motivation to do music at the time (of course other interests did come into play) so gotta be honest...I'm now in the market for a good daw again but I'm more than a little leery going for cakewalk again with that experience in the rear-view mirror. Choices, choices..

@@ProducingInTheBox I appreciate the suggestion! I like a lot of what I see on Studio one and the workflow seems more akin to what I'd like to use, but of course the real 'test' is how it feels in actual use. I will probably end up with the base application of the few DAWs I'm currently considering (SO, cakewalk if they ever /actually/ move on to release a new version, Live and Cubase) and see which one feels most intuitive to use.
I'm a self-taught piano based geezer so loops while fun to play with aren't the 'natural state' for me, but I like a lot of the other flexibility and logic that Live offers, so it's mostly Live vs the rest - at this time. SO (from another video) appears to offer a more intuitive workflow to me but I need to see more of its integration with other tools (HW and SW), particularly my main workstation which I know has very good integration with Live. That bit should be fun, hopefully I don't get lost while testing out stuff :P
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, SO was not really in the contest previously but after this and subsequent researching it's become a contender to look at for me.

The ability to basically have 4 pattern banks for each instrument is so crazy and honestly i'd be down for it. too bad caustic 3 was canceled, the absolute insanity that would be a buffed caustic would be crazy. but at it's current state as a phone daw with no vst support and limited effects per rack makes it SO SO SO limiting.

Most of the big-selling DAWs cost hundreds of dollars yet I don't hear anyone screaming "SCANDAL" about them! Never mind that Cakewalk by Bandlab was essentially the flagship DAW called Sonar back in 2017, was made free to its users the very next year (about six years now! - while continually being improved and developed) and yet some people feel cheated somehow because Bandlab has finally decided to charge for their services! Finally, there are two versions of Cakewalk (which seems to confuse a lot of people): - the browser version is the cut-down one, similar to Garageband; the desktop version is the flagship, and as of this writing, has been free since 2018!
