    So whatever we see happening there, happened about 1468 years ago. Amazing.

      If a civilisation was building something like that over a thousand years ago and did not die out, they would by now have moved to colonising other planets in different solar systems. It would also indicate FTL is unlikely as they are not here already.

      Paragjyoti Nath To think we are the only thing in the universe, to believe this universe is extremely large, and it's only for us, that we are the only planet lucky enough for life is self-centered. It's highly unlikely life isn't any where else in the universe, well it's highly likely god doesn't exist.

    • @Nathan-yk5km

      Name what do you mean by active?

    • @Name-di3ku
      @Name-di3ku 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Meaning there are lights that make small movements then return to their previous locations, If you see one of those you can keep track of it and find a stable star to measure the moving star against the non-moving one to compensate for the turning of the earth. The wobbling stars usually move much further faster in non linear paths over hours.
      There are also bursts of small lights that pop into visibility for less than a second and disappear, sometimes large circular bursts of light that appear then disappear.
      There are lights that are still for hours then shoot of, change direction at `impossible` angles then either stop and stay still again or go over the horizon
      There are paired `stars` that move closer and farther from each other throughout the night, if you watch those for hours sometimes they do a strange spiraling motion reminiscent of aircraft dog-fighting, then they might return to position or simply swap position or one will shoot off while fading
      There are other things that may become visible but the descriptions sound too fantastical for you to believe it. Honestly you will not believe me until you have seen these things for yourself. I know I wouldnt have. Light pollution in cities masks a lot of this and they are too dim for my cell to capture
      Go to rural areas often, and watch for hours. It is something most are not willing to do. But if you do I guarantee you will see enough to keep you watching the skies

      I may have missed it, but I don't think he said whether the dimming was uniformly seen over the entire star.
      I don't know if it's POSSIBLE at this time to TELL if it is uniform.
      He DID say that it was an old star, so I wonder if the dimming might be fluctuations in the stars output, POSSIBLY signaling the visible begining of its death cycle.

      @@johnmcmahon4744 That's right, the volume of a star is determined by how much energy is being released from fusion, the greater the energy, the more outwards pressure exerted from the star's core.
      I'm not sure entirely what determines an object's density, but objects of similar mass tend to have similar density and in cosmological terms, the mass of an object largely determines what that object is and what it's composed of.

    2:53 Just to clarify, We have found planets much more massive than Jupiter orbiting around other stars. In fact you can have a planet be about 74 times the mass of Jupiter before it starts to undergo fusion (around 1.4e29kg)! And at that point it's just barely a brown dwarf. Of course Julian is referring to size not mass (which I didn't catch when writing this initially) hence all the comments below correcting me.

    • @Dylan-hy2zj
      @Dylan-hy2zj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Ferko that's 74 times more massive, no where near 74 times the radius. Additionally, a planet a lot more massive than Jupiter wouldn't have a much larger radius as gravity would compress the hydrogen gas and other gasses.

    • @Ethan-hy3ce
      @Ethan-hy3ce 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @solanumtinkr8280
      @solanumtinkr8280 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Something 5 times larger in size than Jupiter in size would mass far far more as in a stars worth more. The radius of Jupiter is 10 times smaller than than the sun and that is a monster of a G class star and freakishly stable. The smallest star is actually smaller than Jupiter, even though it masses 84 times what Jupiter does.
      Jupiter is thought to be about as large as a planet gets before it starts to shrink under the extra mass and by the time it gets back to and exceeds the size of Jupiter (not mass) it is most definitely a star and not a planet.
      So 5 times the size would be a star and 5 times the mass would probably be smaller. So it was either misquoted or someone did not do their homework and made some erroneous assumptions.
      Many straws were grasped at by someone.

    Sorry but the information you gave about Jupiter being almost big enough to become a star is just plain false. The minimum size for sustaining hydrogen fusion is 75-80 times the mass of Jupiter. Under that ~75-80 MJ limit, but above ~13 Jupiter masses are sub-stellar objects known as brown dwarfs, which may be able to sustain some deuterium fusion for a while, but can't manage the proton-proton chain fusion which powers proper stars.

    • @alekisighl7599
      @alekisighl7599 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the reason, Asher, is if you think about it, the distance between the Earth and Sun is a very long way. It's a hundred million miles or so. And therefore, the distance between the Earth's surface and the top of Everest at 29,000 feet is a tiny fraction of the total distance to the Sun: in the grand scheme of things, it's a trivial change in the actual distance. So that isn't why the temperature changes and therefore also why it isn't hotter.
      The reason it's actually colder is because, as you go up in the atmosphere, the Earth's atmosphere feels less pressure the higher up you go. So as the gas in the atmosphere rises it feels less pressure, which makes it expand(Charles' law). When the gas expands it does some work. And and if it's doing work, it must be losing some energy; and if it loses energy, its temperature must drop because we define temperature as the average energy of the particles. Therefore, if the energy of the particles is lower, the temperature must be lower.
      That's why, at altitude, the temperature appears to fall. In space, outside the earth's atmosphere, if you're facing the Sun, you can actually fry. That's why space suits are specially designed in order to keep people from getting too hot in the sunny bits but also prevent them from becoming too cold in the non-sunny bits.

      Even if a planet is 50times more massive than Jupiter it would get denser it wouldn't be 5x bigger. It can get a bit bigger than jupiter, not five times.

    • @coonjamalay

      Red dwarfs can be 100 times the mass of jupter but still tiny compared to Jupiter's size

    • @VitruviusXXV
      @VitruviusXXV 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coonjamalay I realize this. The more massive, the greater the compression. So a planet much more massive than Jupiter will be of similar volume. On the other hand, a planet with not much more mass or even slightly less mass can have a volume greater than Jupiter's. Anyway, my first comment made no reference about size to mass ratio. It was only about the threshold necessary for nuclear fusion to occur. Around 80 Jovian masses.

    It's probably just the star's fusion in it's core. Unstable stars (stars are unstable like this near their birth and death) light levels vary because the fusion in it's core will cause outer layers of the star to fly out (causing it to be colder and less bright), but then the gravity from the star with pull those layers back in, and the impact causes the star to condense (making it hotter and brighter). This star looks fairly blue, which means that it is nearer to the end of it's life. So, it would probably be safe to say that these light patterns are probably just the star's fusion causing it to change in temperature which causes it's light levels to change. Also, it is worth noting that this fusion is unpredictable both in frequency and strength, so that would explain why it happens at seemingly random times. Another note, the bigger the explosion, the less bright the star will become and the longer it will stay like this... So, no aliens yet.

      Shovon Sarkar ever sense the Drake equation was shown to the public, things have gotten more complicated as our knowledge of the universe has expanded, and while the Drake equation still has a good point there have been more variables discovered that could prevent life from forming. Now there are only a few earth like planets that could harbor life, an example of a variable that could prevent complex life from forming is because the planet might not have a bigger planet like Jupiter around to pull asteroids away from it by using gravitational forces, making it so asteroid collisions with the planet aren’t that common and prevent apocalypses type events. The same goes for any other earth like planet, they need a big planet with a large enough gravitational force close by to prevent extinction level events to take place, this may have a small effect but add more variables that we’ve discovered and the numbers for planets that can harbor life, much less complex life that could build mega structures are very very small and unlikely.

    Is it possible that the star has burned its hydrogen quicker than its helium, causing the two to interact in an inconsistent manner, with the bright periods actually being the odd moments, rather than the dim ones? Like as the hydrogen continues to deplete, the star gradually and slowly fades, and the bright periods are high activity, rather than there being something blocking the light during dips? Maybe our limited observation is the real issue, and the element of time is the real reason we're missing the actually consistent pattern of brightening and dimming? Genuinely asking, I'm not the most familiar with the chemistry of stars.

    • @saxonsoldier67
      @saxonsoldier67 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There exists a possibility that you are on to something regarding the fusion of Hydrogen and Helium. However, after having viewed many stars, we have never seen anything like Tabby's Star. There are an infinite number of possibilities at this point due to the distance and relatively short amount of observation. All evidence would suggest that this is some unique physical phenomena, including your suggestion. You could literally write a doctoral thesis on Tabby's Star at this point. No one could prove you wrong until we observe this star for a few more decades with modern instruments. The 16% change in light values since the 1890's is suspect due to the relative inaccuracies of analog instruments.
