Very nice job mate. I'm starting mine in a few days and it will be very similar.

Thank you. I used it solid for three months in The Alps over the summer and it was perfect.

Great job, can you tell me the brand of railing (sliders) you used? I am especially looking for sliders screwing into the plywood at the bottom of the van. Thanks.

      Thank you 😊
I bought Vadania Extra Heavy Duty ones from Amazon. You’ll have to mount them to a plywood strip and screw the strip to the base of the van.

Also the base of the tray needs clearance from the floor so you can’t really screw sliders directly to the floor

Great Video, thanks! How did you attached the plywood sides to the plywood base and has that method been strong/holding up well?

      Hi Bruce, thank you 😊
I drilled, screwed, and glued the joints. I also screwed on some angles gussets, and a couple of plates in the corners, just to make it really secure.
It’s been good so far, just over a year and with a lot of use.
If you look closely in the video you can see the gussets and corner angle plates.

Very nice job. I'm just about to start my own build but am struggling getting it from my head to design. I've seen loads would would appreciate a step by step approach and materials list if you have it. Cheers. P.s would love to see it in action. Cheers

Hi, thanks for commenting. I’ll have to a show and tell video of the van soon.
I fabricated the mounting frame myself, most people just use a couple of lengths of plywood.
Mine is bespoke to my bikes, you can figure the length and width out by placing the bikes on the ply and just measuring the footprint.
I used a sheet of 12mm phenolic ply but normal ply is much cheaper (I’d also suggest using 15mm or 18mm.
I bought the sliders off Amazon - fitting them is fairly easy once you see them, they have plenty of holes.

Looks really good mate. Nice work. I'm considering making one myself. How do you plan to fix it to the van floor out of interest? I'm considering mounting a Unaka low profile mount to 8020 so I can move the fork mounts to suit other bikes. I'm planning on creating 2 trays and ideally I'd like to be able to carry 5 bikes in total. Although I suspect that may be very tricky for space.

      Hi, thanks for commenting.
There are holes in the base of the steel frame for 6mm countersunk screws - I’ll screws these into M6x13mm insert screws that are screwed directly into the plywood floor. It should look nice and neat.
Most people use plywood battens and 90° angle brackets, and screw directly into the floor.
Being able to move the forks sounds good.
You could also build a full width single tray to accommodate five bikes.
      Cheers
      Neil

Great job with the rack. Looking to build one myself. What length sliding rails did you use?

    • @chasetherainbow
      @chasetherainbow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, thank you 😊
I used 1200mm rails. I could probably have gone longer than that but they’re fine. Obviously a longer rail would bring the bikes out slightly further.

Good job! Currently making myself one for the van, I assume you went with 18mm phenolic? Struggling to find any for a decent price

I think it was 15mm. Couldn’t get 18mm for love nor money at the time and had to go with what was available.
It’s not cheap stuff that’s for sure. Worth it though 👍
