+TheSoulTwins being on tv, selling millions of records, + being able to record quality albums with really good musicians, is a degree of success. 99.99% of musicians dont get there.
Yeah, that's what made him so interesting--he was never the typical "pop star", and didn't seem interested in playing the music biz games that would have made him way more famous, especially in the U.S. He was more interested in making good music and cool observations of life that being some huge MTV star or whatever. Thank goodness he wasn't, lol.
It wasn't too intelligent what he said about Lou Reid just playing to pay the rent, or all that pretentious crap about not appearing on his own albums in the future, or all that other pretentious crap about having 83 musicians, 5 producers, 14 butt plug attendants blah blah blah on his latest album. I clicked on this video to rekindle some fond memories of Matt Johnson's music and quickly found myself thinking he was a prick
"Infected" is one of the few albums i can listen to and enjoy every song. His other albums contain occasional gems for me, but with this he captured lightning in a bottle.
Having just seen The The in Chicago a week ago, I am happy to see that Matt Johnson isn’t worried about being seen as “past it”... an absolutely fantastic show.
Cool to see this----I loved Infected back in the day after I saw his film for all the songs, and played it to death because it was just that damn good---still a classic, as far as I'm concerned, and his masterpiece--only Soul Mining or maybe Dusk comes close. He's still like this---check out the Inertia Variations, his new film.
Infected, top-five album of all time. It is a masterpiece of a veiled horror show underneath well-disguised upbeat jazzy contemporary music and beats. Thick with irony the album musically is beautifully orchestrated my Matt Johnson, his voice is top-shelf and his lyrics, oh his lyrics, the songs are like mini- cinema pieces.
I've been into the the from the start ish,1982!!.for years I thought that I was the only one who liked it!¡!!!.that changed when I passed a house blasting out infected and a big smile appeared!!⚘️⚘️⚘️⚘️🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💯💯
Interesting to see this in 2024 now that Matt is about as old as Lou Reed probably was around the time of this interview! And Matt is back on stage -- and definitely inspired!!
butternutcrunch matt voiced my (beaten generation) s frustration. infected was the soundtrack to an 80s dystopian life. In place and time Britain was sold out, beaten and brain washed. the Thatcher culture rolled over us like an implacable bull dozer. however, you can't let the bastards drag you down and the the made that plain
am i the only one who was recommended this after watching a bunch of interviews with the director matt johnson ? (blackberry, nirvanna the band the show, the dirties)
Smart dude then Smart dude now Matt would luv to meet ya mate .. quick mind finger on the pulse . I like killing joke for the same reasons I like the the Sociopolitical- concerned citizen thing And the anger and frustrations
God I remember watching this interview when it was first aired back in '86. I remember thinking, it was boring as shite, just like the Rock Arena show in general. LOL.
@@alondathomas293 I guess as he's watching it again his point is he now looks at this interview differently? I hope as how can you call listening to matt Johnson "boring" anything but imo.
Ahhh...the days of popular and successful intelligent musicians...
Mmmm...intelligent - yes definitely. Successful, is a totally different story. (tragically)

Very articulate and intelligent guy, love all his albums.
Lyrically, in a class of his own. Massive inspiration.
Not nearly as great as Lou Reid though

A very clever man + a genius for songwritting
a true British great ❤️
Prophetic/ poet/ musician who should be listened to in schools all around the world starting with "The Beaten Generation".
I love how he foreshadows that later song, around 17:00...
being Australian, I have this on video...I love Matt... : )
So ahead of his time
30 years later .... nothing changed .... and still so right
So deep and mesmerizing. Seriously. And only 25 years old. Damn. Lots going on in his mind. Now I see where the title 'Mind Bomb' came from.

back when Matt still had a nice head of hair.
He kinda has a similar talking voice to Nik Kershaw so it’s crazy to hear how different his singing voice is - cool!
Genius.saw the Gulf War and anti Thatcher riots coming.
Brilliant music even mention fake new s
Israel is the 51st State of the USA now. Is that Basia Bonkowski interviewing Matt? It doesn’t sound like Susanne Dowling.
