From the vantage point of 2024, watching this great documentary shows that Matt Johnson is a great writer and musician, a keen political observer and also a prophet: Beaten Generation, Global Eyes, and his comment about the danger of corporations.
Exactly!! I just saw him on his current tour and was so struck by how relevant his lyrics are. Like, "when I looked into my face, it wasn't myself I'd see, but who I tried to be" (which is so relevant now, with social media). And, yes to all on the political reflections. I believe it was meant to be that he had such a long hiatus, writing lyrics but not finishing them, until exactly NOW, this time in history. We needed this new album in this particular time in history.
I thank the Lord I found Matt... he's kept me sane, it's good to know other's are out there that are the same... I'd love to spend time with him... I've got tickets to his ensouled concerts... I pray he stays healthy, safe and blessed... always and amen.

Matt’s a complete one-off, always producing quality music & thought provoking lyrics which are often prophetic. I’ll never forget the MindBomb album which was released in 1989 when UK pop music hit an all-time low with omnipresent Stock-Aitken-Waterman type crap polluting the airwaves. I was already into decent Indie stuff back then but he opened my mind to many things at a time when I was studying GCSE’s & A-Levels, but he taught me so much more 💙

I bought this album, Naked Self, in the year 2000 when I was a sweet naïve 26 year old wide eyed and very hopeful young man. Its music and lyrics got me through leaving the parents' house within a year, getting married, having two kids and then getting divorced in 2009. It got me through the loneliness, the sadness, the despair, the euphoria of plentiful casual intercourse followed by the pit of emptiness which ensues. It got me through the horrible changes to this world that came about since 9/11. It's 2024, I'm 51 and Naked Self still gets me through whatever might happen or not. If I'm still around in 2054, I am quite sure I will still be listening to this record getting me through the last leg of the race. Thank you for creating Naked Self, Matt. I say it with the most sincere sense of gratitude. Thank you.

Great documentary of a great artist.Amazing to hear Matt say he feels he has yet to achieve his potential,when he has written songs like Perfect,Lonely Planet ,.Good Morning Beautiful,Heartland etc etc.Was listening to Mindbomb yesterday,amazing how he predicted World events of today 35 years ago with such accuracy.Never heard any other artist with such hard hitting lyrics,allied to instantly catchy rhythms.
Used to listen to The The albums while I was living as a young lad in bedsitter land SE London Lewisham. New Cross Gate Catford lonely times but looking back good times too helped along by great Matt Johnson music as especially the lyrics.
