@@Theredheaded.cameraman the call actually sounds good I’m shocked the guy never used it especially considering it was a gift. Kinda rude if you ask me.
You send me some calls and I'll use them. Don't think Jeff's being disrespectful, he just values them so highly, he can't seem to get them dirty. Hell, I think all of us have been in that situation before.
Once you start calling, YOU become the hunted. I've learned the hard way too. The hardest part to calling is knowing WHEN to stop calling. Great content Jeff as always.
JEFF, THE DONT OVER DO IT PART!!! GOLD!!! that exact same thing happens to me!! i get their attention, they mill around, take a few steps in the other direction and i get nervous they are going away. i call again. they snap their head and I think im back in it. just for them to walk away! Rollercoaster! what you said is going to work! it makes so much sense. THANK YOU FOR THE GOLD!!!
And That's exactly why we do it... We get nervous that they will just walk away so we just try to catch their attention... But as someone else had mentioned... Once you call.. you are the hunted. Great advice 👍 I still am upset with myself for screwing up last year
Jeff i have used a Doe bleat mouth blown call for years with great success, timing is everything 11/7 to 11/11 has been the best time for me and used sparingly, and never call when you have a buck moving to you . A grunt call in combination with a bleat may be the killer ssetup if you have a buck in sight.YMMD. I have never snort weezed. I have blind called and had success when set up near the thickest cover...
In eastern Kentucky I still hunt so I cover a ton of ground and call a lot and for some reason a doe will show up when I snort wheeze most of the time and she's usually upset......oddly enough my most successful call while moving around is to stop short of a thicket and actually alert snort multiple times while stomping during the rut idk why but the bucks drop everything and come running I think they suspect I'm a doe getting harassed by a young buck and swoop in to steal her
Totally agree with you.. I get in the stand and sit quietly. My property borders public that really only has hunters during blackpowder and rifle. Every year I hear the guys on public rattling and blowing grunts every 10-20 minutes.... 😂 I have a grunt call just in case a buck walks by heading away from me. I tell everyone don't blind grunt and don't rattle because if he's mature he's just going to circle downwind and bust you and quietly sneak away and you'll never see him all season. Hunt the wind and be quiet and patient, if you scouted good and your in the right place you should have good hunting.
Always great videos. My 1st yr with my own small parcel, 23 acres. After watching many of your videos it's all coming together. Sitting on couch more & picking my days. Trailcams showing much daylight activity.
Jeff alot of great tips on calling. I have not had alot of luck with rattling here in se ohio. I did rattle in a 150” one time 11:00 in the morning. Watched him come in across a bean field 300yds away didnt get a shot but still an awsome experience. I have had alot of luck with grunts and snort weeze. I called in a few bucks that are on my wall
During youth hunt we spooked 4 bucks on the way to the stand so I was thinking our hunt for that morning was ruined so tried to teach him how to grunt. Called like 8 times in 5 mins with some really bad sounds and his 8 point came running into the field. Last mistake he made!
Solid advice! Over calling is very common and will usually educate the buck! Once you get his attention, he knows exactly where you are from an area point of view. Definitely don’t need to call to buck that’s coming!
I used a grunt call to pull in the 9pt I arrowed last year during bow season. It worked great. My first buck with a crossbow. Thank you for sharing so much great knowledge
Best advice. grunt 1-2 times at most. minimalist when hunting! stopped taking so much crap with me and its so much more enjoyable. grunt tube and water if its going to be a longer sit.
Jeff, thank you for the content you add. I always find confidence in your contributions. I love the calm and confident demeanor you use as you present. I almost always walk away from listening to you feeling like I'm going to get my first big buck - and I'm always so hard on myself when I don't see any bucks all season - knowing then I need all season to have at it again. Cheers to you!
Have you tried the extinquisher call? its all calls from a fawn to a dominant buck. Its a great call and sounds very realistic. If it ices up in the cold just move the slider (sound selecter) and it breaks all the ice free
My season starts monday next week on a private farm land in NB, we have some nice weather coming up. Perfect timing for this video and thank you for sharing your expertise and experience!
I love how he shows a reverence to the grunt tubes and calls he was given, by hanging it up as a precious item. It would mean so much to me if someone were to hang a gift like that up.
Always great information on your channel Thanks This video is absolutely spot on. I myself am an Eastern Pennsylvania hunter. In high pressure area. I make as little noise as possible 90% of the time. except pre rut when the bucks are just starting to get that itch I use a suttle bleat And i rattle some horns around Nov 1st for a week or so after that it's quiet besides the squirrels teasing me😂 Tagged out on a beautiful 10pt on the hunters moon this year with a soft doe bleat aimed at a yearling spike that was in the thick stuff 20mins later they both showed up Thanks again
Thank you for this video. I've never used calls before but have been seriously thinking about it. I've had too many deer get close but not close enough for a shot. I had a buck show up the other day casually trot away. It would have been nice to throw a Hail Mary to get him to pause for a second.
I’ve had a little different experience than you. I agree with what you said except about blind calling. I’ve had more luck blind calling than to deer I could see. That being said, I only blind call when I have a barrier downwind OR can completely see my downwind within ear shot. I’ve had a lot of luck with it.
Saturday evening and Sunday morning this weekend southern Illinois temp drop 10* winds die down that Saturday early evening and pick up mid morning Sunday morning again. I’ll have to watch from the cell cameras though. Does on their feet right now as I type though at 1342.
Sadly I can also attest that you do not want to grunt again if he's already there and you've grunted once. They can pinpoint you so well that the last thing you want to do is grunt again when he's in range of you already. I also liked the way you had the antlers on a rope dangled down to the ground to make it more real that the two bucks are on the ground instead of up in a tree! Great idea!
Northern WV i had 9 bucks come in Saturday. 4yards under my stand i had a 2.5 year old chasing a spike. He did the Snort wheeze at the spike. It was awesome
Good some part of WV had lots of movement lol. I’m Marion county this weekend was nice and cold mornings weed up quick and very little movement which was odd it was 32 Saturday morning and 34 Sunday morning. Sunday was better but just little boys and does.
I called my first bow buck in. 2 bucks were cruising the bottoms below the hillside I was on. Grunted twice and snort wheezed once because they were going up the wrong part of the hillside away from me. He turned and booked it right to my stand and gave me a broadside shot at 30 yards!
Early season only do a small quick grunt and listen for a few minutes I use it in early season as a locator here in Washington a lot of times you can get a short little grunt back and you can start slowly stalking in that direction so that you know the vicinity they're in other than that we don't use em it will spook in early season
I have had a ton of success blind calling. I usually only grunt but during the rut i bleat as well. Usually takes 15 minutes until i see something. I dont call but every hour or so, maybe 3 times during my hunts. I usually call in a buck but almost always smaller bucks. I had success doing a slow tending grunt to pull big bucks off of a doe they are with.
I've had a lot of success with the can. Bucks and does, doesn't matter what part of the season. I just grunted in a buck last week. He came running in from about 100 yards. I blind called and shot him at 40 yards.
Calling has been great for me this year. I hunt the thumb in michigan public land but i do it strategically. I hunt off ground in river bottoms and ravines so every move has to be strategic. I scout and hunt sign twice. When i clear my spot to sit and make noise when i make my cover i throw a grunt or 2 or squirrel chirps abd turkey when i hunt scrapes i find i tend grunts and doe bleats together. They come in but i have busted every tine because if the swirly winds down there. Had 1 shooter last light come it to a scrape doing it and i could t settle doen shaking to bad and started coughing when i tried to settle
I had a buck last year way across the field going the other way i blew my call so loud it sounded like a duck. Wouldn't you know it he came my way to 90 yards ,dropped him .4.5 year old 10 pt. Great hunt .
Thank you for sharing these very informative videos man!!! Those deer you are hunting sound like they are about as wild as these Georgia deer are when it comes to calls and stuff!!
Snort wheeze has been a big player for me here in Kansas. I definitely pick my spots but if I have a mature buck chasin does in a field they may not come right away but they will usually come by and check it out! Killed my two best deer snort wheezing and grunting!
I don’t touch my grunt tube until rut. I don’t want to give my positions away. When it’s rut,I rattle periodically in the morning and will do tending grunts. Also I have grunted in bucks before during the rut and post rut.
Hey brother long time subscriber of your channel, im down in western NC back in the mountains and im going several miles back in the woods where there is pretty much zero pressure and some decent bucks, is grunting and snort wheeze going to be ok or just a grunt call? Not really sure about rartling antlers, like you say if they arent aggressive then they run. Thanks for your feedback brother.
I called a buck in last year that came to the bottom of my tree an hour later after he looked at me and then seemed to ignore me. I did one contact grunt and then a tending grunt. He walked out of sight and showed up out of nowhere. They will come back and check if they don't find a doe to chase. My dad used to take a vacuum cleaner hose and zip tie it to the ladder of his stand, one end would be up by him, and the other end would be on the ground and he would blow his grunt into it and it would make the sound near to the ground. I watched that old man call in several bucks that way.
Chase phase is starting here where I live. I used estrous bleat, buck circled downwind and crept up on me. Busted! He blew and I knew it was over. Nope, he did the head jerk a couple times, bent down and nibbled on grass. I then quietly pulled my bow off hook. He then walked directly to and under my stand. I waited for him to walk by and quitely stood up ... 15 yard shot. He's at the processors as of this morning. I've bow hunted and called for many years, I made the mistake of staying on my duff and not watching downwind.
Actually this video is a punch in my face. I have 5 nice bucks, 4 were shot being silent in stand. 1 being shot within 30 minutes of getting off my quad and waking 50 yards to my stand. But no grunting or calling. In fact second big buck was shot because my son wouldn’t listen and was 150 yards away calling and calling. Deer came walking quietly to me and died. lol. I lost my way and called both years last two years…and struggled until rifle season to drop a nice buck. In my defense had a total knee replacement and the pain before and long recovery threw me off everywhere. Not to late to adjust this year only been out twide
The Primos doe can call is wrong according to a deer biologist, it's a lot shorter than that & Primos corrected the call & made a new one! The original was a fawn in distress call !!
I have to check on that one...but the one I like the most is the Tru Talker. Hunt r specialties makes a Tru Talker OG version...although mine broke in the first minute out of the box
Anyone help me with this do you have a crosswind up in the stand when calling so he’s comfortable coming downwind of you or even in rut keep your downwind super safe thanks!
Ohio you didn’t mention! But I understand why, your from Shitagian! Ohio has some of the best hunting grounds for whitetail. Between Iowa and Ohio they are the best hunting states
Almost blew it on a nice 10 a few years back. Threw a hail mary grunt at him 150 yards away. He started headin away from me but made a 20 yard loop and came straight in to 20 yards in front of me lookin right at the base of the tree then stood there for several minutes before he turned and gave me a chance to get on him with my bow. Now i'm always gettin ready as soon as i have a chance even if it doesnt look like hes comin in.
I'd say that almost 100% of the time when I have a buck during peak rut, the doe in heat bleat makes them come my way. Also, 100% of the time, they circle down wind. Most of the time, they are close enough to get a shot before they smell me.
Ya know, i used to be fantastic at paintball in thick bush courses, and the reason i could evade detection was because i only took one shot per interaction. First shot is an attention getter (if you miss), but a double-tap gives away your exact location
I messed up exactly like this last year... Biggest most beautiful 8 point buck... I over called. He was definitely aware of my calls and headed along the woods line scraping and slowly walking ears back... I called again .... Aggressively ...That was a huge mistake... He turned towards me head on.. putting his head up and down trying to make me out .. then said screw this..... he left ....Live and learn but still kick my own butt for making that Mistake
Ive got a serious problem going on. For the past 5 seasons i just cant seem to see a buck over a spike. 2018 was the last season i harvested a buck, since i cant seem to even see one except on t cam. I harvested bucks year after year, then all of sudden im in this drought. Im not doing anything different, same spots, techniques, scent control. Neighbors all continue to get them, hunters in my group also. Only thing i can think is maybe my stress level being up, can deer and other animals feel that, do i give off a bad aura?
Made that mistake this year. Tried blind calling this year. Buck circled around me and grunted back and ran off. Never heard it at all until the grunt..
Jeff ive been peddling your channel and info to all my hunting buddies. You and i hunted Allegheny at the same time one year when we talked on here. Im looking to pivot in my carrer. You hiring?
Just an opinion and 40 years hunting whitetail in NB Canada, you call they leave fast and anyone I know says the same. Gave up calling years ago. Keep a grunt call to stop a deer, maybe turn one in my direction, but that rarely works here. To me it’s the same as going to China and trying to talk mandarin after taking a couple weeks of language training. Any Chinese person will know you don’t fit in or sound right. Deer are the same, you can mimic, but they’ll always know you’re not a deer. I think people call mainly because they’re bored, have a hard time sitting and doing nothing. My advice, find deer, set up, be quiet and let them do what they do, let them be the ones to communicate. The more natural their home is, the more comfortable they’ll be to keep doing what they do.
I think "Don't Over-Call" is dependant on your spot....I live in Maine, I hunt 105 acres, I see a minimum of 5-6 deer each night, sometimes up to 20. I have yet to Over-Call my heard. At times they might not act interested, but I've never scared one away....But like I said, this too, could be spot-dependant
Well how many big bucks have you shot. Not sure how you know that you’ve never over called. Does a big buck come out and in range every night that you call? I doubt it
When a buck is coming in to a grunt and your bow hunting, don’t make the mistake of drawing your bow to soon, because he may stop and stand there for a really long time
My husband and I sent the calls to you. They are made custom by Bubeck Custom Calls in Northern Pennsylvania.

Do you have a certain grunt call that you find sounds the most realistic? Like the call in the video?
The Primos doe can call is wrong according to a deer biologist, it's a lot shorter than that & Primos corrected the call & made a new one! The original was a fawn in distress call !!
Nov 15th-17th we are peaking in TN Typically
great information. thanks!
You are very welcome!
I call a good amount during and pre rut. I only call in thick cover on a knoll. Somewhere they have to come in range to see.
Where do you get that buck grunt call?
I have to check on that one...but the one I like the most is the Tru Talker. Hunt r specialties makes a Tru Talker OG version...although mine broke in the first minute out of the box
Jeff im from wausau Wisconsin and wondering what you charge for a cancelation i follow up and wondering if u can help me i only have 19 acres
Great video
Top notch advice
Used a rattle bag for years with Zero success. Finally got some real horns and what a difference! But like you said , less is more.
Are you saying Jeff’s wrong ? Obviously you don’t know what you’re doing lmao.
And any more than a double tap you better soon be on the move !
Great video 😊
Thank you very much!
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I hopefull next Saturday the 2nd will be good here in PA 🙌
In Texas they are aggressive (not antler tickles), sometimes killing the other
They do that everywhere for sure! Some places they just don't respond favorably to hunters the vast majority of the time
I messed up exactly like this last year...
It was 5 yrs ago since the last time I grunted at a buck, I'm fully convinced he's still running....
I have the exterminator and it has a pretty good sound, and I like my can
I know a lot of folks like that one, but man that plasticky sound...
Fred said it best, sit down, shut up and look
I don’t hardly call at all. Sometimes rattles and short sneeze at a buck from a distance
You are probably wearing sitka. They can sense the beta in You
Made that mistake this year. Tried blind calling this year. Buck circled around me and grunted back and ran off. Never heard it at all until the grunt..
What grunt call is that?
Jeff ive been peddling your channel and info to all my hunting buddies. You and i hunted Allegheny at the same time one year when we talked on here. Im looking to pivot in my carrer. You hiring?
I just broke the golden rule this morning with a small 8 point😂🤦♀️
Really good points! I've sate 17 times this season so far...zero calls used at this point, and 1 monster on the ground so far.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 beauty 👍
.. is this 100% true? ..
Big day tomorrow!
Nice
Thank you!
AGREED
Wish I knew this about 2 weeks ago I called got his attention and I hit it again and he spooked about cried he was a giant
Oh no! Dang, well we hunt Rd are in a constant state of learning...hope you still get him!
@ hope so man good luck yourself here from Pennsylvania
I tried rattling last year. I did it while sitting against a tree on Halloween. Buck busted out of some saplings in front of me and almost gored me
I think "Don't Over-Call" is dependant on your spot....I live in Maine, I hunt 105 acres, I see a minimum of 5-6 deer each night, sometimes up to 20. I have yet to Over-Call my heard. At times they might not act interested, but I've never scared one away....But like I said, this too, could be spot-dependant
Well how many big bucks have you shot. Not sure how you know that you’ve never over called. Does a big buck come out and in range every night that you call? I doubt it
@tjr4483 Been hunting my whole life buddy, with Great success. I'm entitled to my opinion and you can suck a dick hahaha!
When a buck is coming in to a grunt and your bow hunting, don’t make the mistake of drawing your bow to soon, because he may stop and stand there for a really long time
