      I totally agree, they swung at the pitch and missed IMO. Flex, plastic ,creaking and less functional don’t belong at that price point. There are wheels out there built with better materials and more functionality for less money.

    Good review. But the wheel is an absolute no-go. Too less functionality and features for the price. No thumb rotaries (they are for most essential), no illumination (is nice to have) etc. If you compare to other wheels it should not cost more than 300 to 400 €/$. And this is already the upper end...

    How this wheel fits into the VRS lineup is as important as the wheel specific competition. I and many others go for the VRS stuff because it's quality at a reasonable price with small concesions in functionality/aesthetics (wheelbase is an undressed MIG motor). People were waiting for a wheel to make the VRS a complete, competitive package, which it isn't. I think they lost sight of the market and got a bit carried away.

  • @Shake_nBake805
    @Shake_nBake805 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    It's a bare bones design that fits with the M.O. of VRS but watching this review just affirms my initial thought of this wheel being way overpriced. I feel like they could get away with $500 maybe $600 for what they're offering and that's mainly due to the higher build/design quality.

    Here in Australia the value doesn't stack up against The new Moza wheel with the usb hub or even the Simagic GT4 usb version which is under $500 of the cost of the VRS.

    @johnathanmoyer2375 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The VRS wheel might have been a good price 4 years ago when it's closest competition would have been the F64 from Ascher, but the market has been completely upended to the point where even wheels with 7+ encoders AND a screen are a touch sell for a grand.

    • @ChrisPBacon9

      Yep. They can tout higher build quality all they want but if a competitor's wheel has more functionality, is sturdy enough, feels good in the hands, and is made of high quality materials, then is the "higher" build quality actually worth it? Wouldnt be to me

    Thanks for the review Will! I'm only driving in VR so would like to know which of all these wheels are good to use in VR, can the buttons easily be found if you can't see them, enough functionality available on the wheel for VR because you can't use a button box with loads of buttons, or maybe a wheel with less buttons is better if you have a small stream deck or button box on the left and/ or right side of your wheel attached to the rig, et cetera. Looking forward to the GRID steering wheel review!

    Hey, great review as always.
    I've been wanting to buy the vrs wheelbase to upgrade from my csl dd. Now, i have a cube f-pro and a grid ddu5 dash, which i would like to use with it. My question is, do you have any measurement of the length of the whole VRS qr, from the front face of the wheelbase, back to the point where the qr mounts to the wheel (while attached)? From my rough estimation, the shaft is 80mm and the qr is 40mm, so does that mean that the whole assembly is 120mm?
    Also, does the vrs qr have more play than the xero play?

    There seems to be nothing between the "entry level" fanatec direct drive stuff (like that R2R bundle) and this type of really expensive stuff. It's frustrating as someone who'd like to get back into SIM racing but ideally not have to spend £4k to get a good setup.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The stuff on this price level is much higher quality than Fanatec’s stuff (other than the M4 wheel) in terms of the materials used, etc. whether you need that quality or not is entirely subjective.

    • @kel-2399
      @kel-2399 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's where asetek is trying to get in - it's a bit more than the fanatec, but is a decent step up. Then you can upgrade everything as needed.
      Their la prima bundle starts at €1134 with pedals or €882 without them.
      Moza have some options in that 4-800 price range aswell, as do fanatec, but you can't upgrade them (fanatec you can go from 5-8nm), you'll have to buy a whole new base/pedals if you want to upgrade.
      It is worth noting with asetek, they have said they will provide an upgrade path in the future, but as yet they haven't shown anything off, so no one knows hot expensive or how easy it will be, or when it will be available and if so how long they will support that upgrade path for

    • @jeffrdrama7984
      @jeffrdrama7984 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep that's what I meant. I understand why some products are more expensive - better quality etc, but there is no actual "mid range". You either go cheaper and end up with a Fanatec bundle or have to go all in. The higher end wheelbases alone can cost more than some of the lower end wheels+base+pedal setups. It's hard to justify right now as I'm not sure I'll be able to find time to SIM race, but annoying as I know one day I'll be wanting to upgrade.

    • @dbzcollector9963
      @dbzcollector9963 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffrdrama7984your kinda just contradicting yourself there bud… you say you won’t even be able to find the time to play but you’ll wanna upgrade one day? That seems like a huge waist if you don’t have the time. It’s not like a super expensive setup is gonna make you any better or faster, and it definitely won’t help you find time to play lol. For your use case fanatec would be more than enough for the casual sim racer, Moza offers some decent low,mid, and high range setups but the problem is it’s pc only. If your on console tho your most likely playing GT7 or some forza game in which case fanatec is more than enough for those arcade racers. It’s only when you start getting into competitive stuff like iracing and ACC leagues that a more expensive setup would make more sense.

    Not the best time to release something so simple looking and overpriced when Moza just released a killer wheel for almost a quarter of the price. I just realized, instead of measuring the weight of the wheels, maybe you should be measuring the moment of inertia of them! If you can find a way to measure that. Then, you could match that with the torque of the wheelbase to find the rotational acceleration of the whole setup. I don't know how you would measure the moment of inertia though.

    We really need someone to make a high quality QR that allows for full data and power transmission, and if it's wireless, make a standardized bluetooth protocol. This is the biggest problem I see with a lot of simracing gear, everything is either wired or only for a specific wheelbase.
    And not to forget, an open software system. So no Moza PitHouse for your base, VRS Software for the pedals, Fanatec software for the H shifter, and etc etc. Just annoying stuff that can be fixed if everyone liked each other a bit

      As far as I can tell, the Asetek Simsports QR is designed to be compatible with any USB wheel, idk about Bluetooth. They also have support for most 3rd party wheel manufacturers. They just went into full production for it, so it should be available soon. I'm waiting on that before I make the jump the DD.

    • @sheep7255
      @sheep7255 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quinnseitz1377 Most ecosystems are closed if you don't want to use wired. That's what the comment is about, being able to use any wheel with any wheelbase, and not having to worry about a cable. All wheelbases are compatible with usb wheels as long as you have a way to attach it to the wheelbase. My problem is that it's always a different QR, that can't provide power and transfer data wirelessly or not when going from a wheel from another manufacturer, to the one made by the same manufacturer's wheelbase. Take Asetek, they make probably the best wheelbase, and they make wheels, but you can't easily transition into another wheel from say moza. If you wanna use your moza wheel, you first gotta get the Asetek QR, and then you need to connect the wheel by USB, and only the butterfly style wheels have that.

    This is insanity. How can VRS justify charging $1349 for this (and that is on bloody sale its normally $1557)?!?! Their 20nm wheelbase is the same price as this wheel when the wheel is on sale.
    This wheel:
    1. Looks terrible (subjective of course)
    2. Lacks the most import functional element of a formula style wheel (thumb encoders)
    3. Lacks any screen/dash equivalent
    4. Made of LESS premium materials than much cheaper wheels
    There are more elements, but In my mind, this fits in the same price bracket as the Fanatec Formula V2.5. Pretty much nothing above $600 aud
    The price here is almost hilariously bad. From a company that held the price to performance crown for pedals and DD wheelbase, it's a crying shame.
