  • When I failed the battery of the UPS, I wanted to check the veracity of different videos that you can restore the battery and thus to repair the UPS. In the end I managed to make UPS and even do better than the UPS was new, but in a totally different way.

    Safety Tip... To anyone who is going to make this... Car batteries, gas-off when being charged... Hydrogen. Hindenburg...
    I've done this mod but I drilled a hole in the wall and ran the battery... OUTSIDE ! Your insurance company wont like you burning down your house. Use the shortest cable length you can and make sure you use big cables. To avoid voltage drop.
    Also, I'd suggest drilling a 6.5mm (1/4") hole through the battery post (Perpendicular to the post... put another way, from one side to the other) but do this outside... again, hydrogen is very flammable ! Try to cover the battery to stop debris ... and secure the terminals with a nut, bolt and star washer. The home made clamps Victor used are cheap and fast to make, but he is good with his hands... If you do it this way , youare at risk of arcing if bumped. Boom, you are dead.
    Spaciba +Victor V. ! Nice video, sir. Your English is good and you are obviously smart, educated or both.

      You have not right to say that what I do is dangerous. When the battery is not under load for a long time, then there is no explosive gas and no danger of explosion.

      +Victor V.
      I think you misunderstood what I said and meant.
      I never said what you do is dangerous. No, No, No...
      We have a responsibility to protect others from danger.
      You and I know about this, but less skilled people will not know of the dangers.
      I am a qualified Electronic technician... and a Mechanical Fitter.
      I suggested different connections to the battery, because of the risk of a spark... at the source of venting Hydrogen!!!
      Also because most people, wont have a piece of steel bar at home and wont get a good connection, which would require the exact curve to match the diameter of the battery pole. This would mean the electrical load at point of contact to the battery post would be at the edge of the steel bar and one point of the curve... and that is if the curve is not twisted (Spiral) when made.
      Victor, I have every right to comment, especially if I am an expert and sir... I am an expert.
      Firstly I said "Spaciba +Victor V. ! Nice video, sir.
      Your English is good and you are obviously smart, educated or both."
      Then I said
      "Victor u... is good with his hands..."
      I am 100% correct about Hydrogen.
      All wet-cell, lead-acid car batteries produce Hydrogen when being charged. Hydrogen is the gas that both burns easily and can explode when ignited.
      I hope you feel more comfortable with my suggestions, understanding why I have added my tips to your video comment.
      At least one person is happy with my suggestions... Look !

    Do you expect that the UPS will be able to charge that ~70Ah battery ? It's designed to charge batteries which fit the UPS. Charge current is set to the battery size it fits. This way it will charge that ~70Ah battery for weeks if not longer. Good for one time use.

    • @DoitselfInfo
      @DoitselfInfo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that it is necessary to install a fully charged battery. A fully charged battery consumes a small current.

    • @axonis2306
      @axonis2306 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, of course it can charge a larger battery. Where did you see it's 70ah ?

    • @GabrielKozsar
      @GabrielKozsar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's like 50Ah guessing from the size of it. Google a online calculator for the charge time. Theoreticaly ,say 50Ah charged by 1A will charge for 60h (with 20% efficiency loss). Depends also how the UPS's charging circuit is designed.

      There are several tips for doing a pro job
      do not attempt to do this until you know what you are doing - the acid can burn your skin
      check the voltage first - there may be a kaput cell which would be a waste of time trying to fix.
      Check your battery fluid.
      attempt to fully charge the battery.
      (I discovered about these on rapid renew roadmap site )

    You just added distilled water in some other videos they say to add Epsom salt in water.
    And is that true that distilled water starts boiling when you charge the batteries coz they are made to have gel instead of water?
    (They leak and damage the UPS)
    And is that also true that distilled water becomes sulfuric acid after some time in the batteries?

    • @davidbolha
      @davidbolha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hellow Hi,
      Epsom salt is added to "wet cell" typed SLA rechargeable batteries. That would be your car battery.🙄
      This is an AGM type of VRLA battery. Here you only add distilled water into each cell. To my experience it is best to under than to overfill.🤔
      True. 😉

  • @jeep146
    @jeep146 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For most batterys regular distilled water will work. Tap water is never a good idea as it often has a lot of impurities. A low cell lets say in a car battery while starting or charging can cause an explosion. I had one blow the top off of one and acid went everywhere. Wear eye protection if you don't want to be blinded.

    • @DoitselfInfo
      @DoitselfInfo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope that you are not talking about me. I use distilled water and the battery may explode if you charge the battery and allow a spark when removing the conductor.

    • @jeep146
      @jeep146 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really anybody working around batterys. I worked around batterys for years never had a problem. One day I started a generator which had four full size batterys. I heard a click then boom just like a shot gun going off. If I had been near it I would of had acid all over me. When I worked on aircraft I found one overheating, I had gloves it was still hot as a frying pan and ran down the stairs with it. It wasn't the charger the battery just went bad. I urge everyone to respect these little electrical bombs.

    I have tried this on 5 sealed lead acid batteries so far and it hasn't been effective. All of the electrolyte is contained in the blotters between the plates. The electrolyte is purposely slightly underfilled by design to prevent leakage in the event the battery case becomes cracked.
    When refilling the water level, pure distilled water can only be used. I distill my own since the water marketed as distilled at stores can have an additive (like a small amount of salt or fluoride).
    Adding the correct amount of water is the most difficult part of this operation. Unfortunately, you can't see how much water the blotter needs by appearance. You want to only fill the blotter without having any standing water on top of the plates. When you charge the battery after the refilling operation, electrolyte (water and acid) will flow out of the blotter and rise above the plates (which is undesirable). So, if you added the correct amount of water, the blotter will only appear moist during charging, any more or less is undesirable.

    The plates in these batteries are thin. By design, they should get dry before the plates fail in some way. Doing these "repairs" can extend the life if the battery a little longer, not like new.

  • @GabrielKozsar
    @GabrielKozsar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is one "little" problem. By adding distilled water to the battery
    you won't help it, only if the battery was boiled to oblivion (improper charging) and off gased the water. Because the "sulfuric acid" is on the plates
    sulfated, you end up with battery filled with water or more diluted
    electrolyte. You have to get the plates clean of sulfation ,if it's heavily sulfated, to get back the capacity. You can measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte which tells you.....
    I have done it. ;) cheers

    • @DoitselfInfo
      @DoitselfInfo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some masters recommend to refill distilled water + electrolyte, 50x50 %. The electrolyte degrades with time usually.

    • @axonis2306
      @axonis2306 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't measure the specific battery in an AGM electrolyte because you can't draw liquid.

    • @GabrielKozsar
      @GabrielKozsar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Victor
      masters ??? lol. distilled water is ok , if it evaporated = the battery was overboiled...adding H20 is not enough if the battery suphated.. You must DE-sulphate the plates by special charging process ! It's called equalization charge. Adding +electrolyte (acid) into a sulphated battery is a temporary short fix until the battery sulphates even more and the cells are killed by too high impedance. The electrolyte does not degrade by any means , only the water can escape when it's boiling by pushing current which is not absorbed. Acid remains in the cell, on the plates, or in the electrolyte.
      (wikipedia) In the discharged state both the positive and negative plates become lead(II) sulfate (PbSO
      4), and the electrolyte loses much of its dissolved sulfuric acid and becomes primarily water.
      +Axonis

      Boiled water will have a bad effect on the battery. You can use boiled water if you cannot find distilled water.

    • @freddyzdead1
      @freddyzdead1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, that would be even worse than tap water. Boiling it just concentrates whatever minerals it has dissolved in it. Rain water would be a lot better.

      I have 12 volt 8.2 AH ups battery. I have refilled with distilled water (1x sulfuric acid : 3x water). I used 16 volt dc transformer to charge the battery. After few hours, When i test the volt , it shows 14+ volts in my battery. but when i connect my battery , it is unable to provide backup and my computer shuts off immediately. It seems to me that the battery AH capacity is damaged. Please suggest me in this regard that what can i do now. thanks in advance

    • @DoitselfInfo
      @DoitselfInfo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can restore the battery if the plates is not destroyed.

    • @ledzep3971
      @ledzep3971 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Measure the voltage with a 5A load. If the voltage drops significantly, either electrolyte mixture is incorrect or damaged plates. You can purchase an electrolyte tester quite economically.Probably plates are damaged, it may come back if recycled a few times.
      Better off getting a new marine battery.

    This will not work. You have de pressurised the battery by taking those vent caps off. For the £10 or so these cost don't waste your time

    • @matthewhughes4062
      @matthewhughes4062 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DovahkiinYT the electrolyte is not what holds the electrical charge. It is the lead plate that holds the charge. And by design these batteries which are Valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) do require the correct pressure internally to operate correctly. Also the amount of water that he has added to the cells would dilute the electrolyte too much. They only require a small amount of electrolyte in these which would have been absorbed by the lead plate during recharge It will all be pushed back out of the positive plate and mixed with the water he has added bringing the electrolyte specific gravity well below the 1300 it's supposed to be.

      de-pressurized? no.. those rubber boots are meant to let pressure escape.. this happens when the battery gets hot. they are rubber so they can keep the liquid from spilling out.

      Everywhere in the world! In South Africa is for free! You can collect at the Petrol Stations!
      In other Country’s may be cost small money! If you don’t have - wait for the first rain and collect at least 5 litters!
