The reason why those head sculpts look so different because they’re almost 19 years apart. Ray Park, got older and gained some more weight since the Phantom Menace. They both look incredible
No. The reason they look different is because the DX16 simply does not look like either Ray Park circa 1999, or Darth Maul as how he looked in TPM. It's like they put the make-up and horns on a different actor. Almost everything about the DX16 portraits looks off, the facial features and the eyes. The portrait also looks he's overweight, rather than being slim around the chops which Park certainly was over 20 years ago. It's as if Hot Toys used a cartoon or a cosplayer as a reference point. The DX16 is a fine Darth Maul figure, it's just not a great representation of Ray Park's Darth Maul in the 1999 film. The DX18 sculpt is a night and day improvement. It does an outstanding job of capturing every aspect of Ray Park; all of his features, the look an expression of the eyes, while at the same time showing illustrating his more mature features.
I got mine in the mail today. So glad i decided to buy it. I was on the fence for months. He is amazing. Way better looking and more posable than i was expecting. I feel like pictures and videos just don’t do this guy justice. You gotta handle this one to really appreciate it. Also, in case you haven’t removed the wrist covers yet (if you want to of course) they are not permanently attached. Just a snug fit. Took mine out after 5 minutes. The instructions even show them as separate pieces.
Obviously the The Phantom Menace version of the figure is more iconic, but from an aesthetics perspective, I much prefer this figure. It's not just that Hot Toys, imo, has produced one of their very best head sculpts here, it's also the fantastic work which has been done on the legs and the costume.
Dude! I JUST got mine yesterday. HOLY SHIT I love him. You ain't kidding. He is currently my favorite figure in my collection. It's easy to say that when you get a new figure. But honestly, I just love everything about him.
This Maul is freakin amazing!!!! I'm so glad that I bought it the night before it was wait listed. Theres nothing to be disappointed about with this (Solo) Darth Maul. The outfit, face sculpt and robot legs is the selling point for me. Pure awesomeness. Great review man 💪🏼
@@JedhaPatrol Yes sir! I was on the same boat as you where I was like "meh, looks cool but probably a pass" but having it in hand & watching your review just sold me on it. Today I got Mando in his OG armor so cant wait to have him in person. After that plan on getting Beskar Mando.
I like the detailed explanation of the paint applications in this video. These details are what separate Hot Toys figures from the rest. I would love to see actual videos from Hot Toys detailing the production process on these figures.
I agree with everything you mentioned and we need a Hot Toys "How it's made" episode. The painting process has to have some automation because pairs of the same figure and accessories are nearly identical.
The details shown in this review have put me over the fence, I will likely pick up this figure now. My favorite saber is Luke's green ROTJ. This may be coincidence but it seems student's are the same color as there master's. And what's your favorite saber, don't think you mentioned it. Great review once again.
Another great unboxing & review. This loot at the figure has tipped the scales for me & I am using this as my Clone Wars Maul as JP suggested. I will use the link provided as well. Thanks
Great review of the figure! This will be my 1st Maul and DX figure so I’m excited to see it in person. 🙌🏽 I also preordered the Clone Wars Maul too. Hopefully I can see your review on that one once you get it in hand. Thank you again for sharing! 👍🏽
Wasnt sure on TCW Maul because of those elbows. Another bummer is that it uses the Solo head from what I have seen which is just annoying considering there is like 15+ year difference between the incarnations. Hope you like it anyways, but its a pass for me.
I actually think the Sideshow 1/6 Phantom Menace Maul is a better Ray Park sculpt than the Hot Toys, but the HT has better paint apps. The Solo Maul definitely nails his older look!
Hi , I just brought DX 18 . Can I ask about the hand or wrist join ? I realized that is very hard to change or put back the hand . Is it happen to you as well ?
I do love hot toys but the fact posing can damage them is so off putting, I mostly collect black series and I know plastic ages but they are posable... What's the worst damage you've ever seen from posing hot toys? Not neccaserilly yours I know you look after your figures very well! :)
It really depends on the type of costume and materials used. Darth Maul is using mostly fabric cloth, so I don't think posing him or leaving him in a pose will cause any issues. I think most Star Wars figures are ok for posing. Unless they have a rubber body suit like First Order troopers The most restrictive figures to pose are usually Super Heroes with these complex, intricate costumes. Like Spider-man (ironically) because they have a full body suit made of vinyl/screen print material and if you leave them in a pose for a long time, like a month it can wrinkles or creases at the elbow or knees and sometimes crack (also depends on the enviornment if theres a lot of humidity) But if you just pose them to take a picture and put them back in a neutral stance, its really not an issue. (Scarlet Spider dose not have this problem cause its basically a cotton suit) And any figure that has the rubber seamless arms. Thanos/Thor. Those can crack if you leave the arm bent too long. If I have those I just never bend the arm at all.
@@Centrocal Yeah Marvel heroes are just a no no for the most part, the only Spider-Man I'm interested in is the Iron-Spider because he isn't a whole suit. And spot on, Star Wars figures are usually fine I have Dooku and he's great! Others though like Vader are not that posable sadly. Anyways I agree with the OP too, alot of the Spider-Man figures are so off putting you basically have to have him standing straight which is no fun.
@@Centrocalinteresting hindsight . I was planning on getting the last batman begins from hot toys in 1/6. Since the suit is all ruber , should I be worried?
I have pre ordered clone wars maul, and i am debating what to get first phantom menace dx17, which i found for a insane price or dx18 for a fair price.🤔
@Jedahpatrol great detailed review , I made the decision to purchase today was fairly easy based on you already have your phantom menace Darth Maul and your opinion on the clone wars one. I honestly had to make a tough decision but it was easy after watching your vid , was choosing on another iron man (midas) and this Darth Maul Dx 18 Solo to be honest it looks stunning in pics, on your video etc..., I can't wait to get it in hand thank you for your detailed review it helped , plus don't get me wrong the midas is amazing but for more bang for the buck Darth DX18 is the way to go thanks bro for being honest in your reviews on the Darth Maul and Midas really help me out.
Hi Jedha! I received my Maul and he’s awesome! Question, is there any reason he’s noticeably smaller than like my Vader-Jango- and Boba fett got toys figures? I know he’s like 12 inch and the others are around 14 inch but is that movie accurate like size wise between characters is maul naturally smaller than the other guys in film?
Great review man. The poses, the angle, the lights, looks awsome. Btw I have a question for anyone who possesses the fig: is it safe to put it on the bench? I mean I just got mine and it's kinda hard to put it in a sitting position, I feel like I'm gonna break it.
Debating on canceling or even possibly swapping (i hear sideshow occasionally does this?) my preorder of the clone wars Maul to this one. It would be my first Hot Toys even though I have Beskar Mando on preorder as well. Thoughts? This guy looks badass...
@@JedhaPatrol I may just do that. I thought my first one would be Mando but I think I am gonna make the leap. Is it too soon to go buy myself a detolf for one figure or do these things tend to multiply fast? lol
I was wondering if the figure was going to be wretched, honestly. The bad press it was initially getting, which was then exacerbated when the Clone Wars Maul was announced, had me on the fence. Several TH-cam Channels were suggesting the Solo Maul was RIP after the Clone Wars version was revealed. From monitoring Sideshow's Best Seller positions since this was released in HK, I can tell you this figure is the total opposite of RIP as some anticipated. I just received mine last week, and let me say this is without question my "favorite" Star Wars Hot Toys figure, and I have over twenty of them. My guess is that this will go on Waitlist soon and fetch a fairly high aftermarket price in the near future.
I got mine in yesterday and I totally agree. This Maul beats out the Phantom Menace Maul. I was able to remove those sleeves in the gauntlets, they came out pretty easy
I noticed with The Phantom Menace Darth Maul under the right lighting is red paint applications it's spot-on to how they are in the movie. Try shining a flashlight on them if the parrot next to a picture you'll see what I'm talking about. I definitely prefer both heads to The Phantom Menace Maul and that of the solo. But then again I'm a huge fan of The Phantom Menace and I am not a fan of really anything Disney especially solo it was better than the Disney Trilogy though that is just utter shit!!! for me the only part of the movie solo I liked was Darth Maul's cameo and hot toys definitely nailed it again with Darth Maul it's a great figure. But I definitely prefer the original one the costume everything I like it much better.
What's not to understand you display it right next to the character dude it's not rocket science... This guy almost sounds offended that they gave them so much stuff...
Now we need a Maul with the spider legs to complete the set.
The reason why those head sculpts look so different because they’re almost 19 years apart. Ray Park, got older and gained some more weight since the Phantom Menace. They both look incredible

Best lightsaber- Count Dooku, it has such an elegant nature about it .
Favorite saber is 100% the Darksaber. After the Obi-Wan’s ROTS one. Yes I have been an avid clone wars fan since it dropped as well as rebels.
