I like the version and theme they used from 1985 to 2000

That theme was "Cool Hand Luke: The Tar Sequence", which it was composed by Lalo Schifrin. It gives me so much nostalgia!

I never realised 'till now that the standard openner had a second "thump" before the main bridge started (Under "This is National...". I've looked at other state recordings and no one else seems to have it.. Was it a Melb only thing???? It wasn't on the older and "special" opennings... (8 Sep 1988 seems to be the first one here)

1986 - those were the days when even Collingwood and Richmond are bankrupt. Fortunately the Eagles saved the league.

Can an Australian please educate this American? Why was it called “National” Nine news if each state capital produces its own “national”newscast? Did the Melbourne edition air news stories regarding the affairs of other states?

The question I’d be more inclined to ask is why did every channel have the exact same stories and viewpoints? Who decided what was worthy of being included in the “news” and what position to take?

Unfortunately Australia was and still is very whitewashed on TV. I don’t watch commercial TV much so I don’t know how much better we are now.
