im buying this for my FJ just because of your review i will be doing the trail when i get back from overseas, and your videos about the GTT are extremely helpful in my planning, hope to see you all out there sometime
I've been using a regular ole blue tarp with bungees and para cord and clips to do basically the same thing, however i would tie out out to nearby trees, which was a bit problematic at times to find the suitable camp site with the right trees! I've just received one of these and cant wait to try it out!
I bought that same tarp after spending an evening in the rain using a much smaller tarp. It gives a nice big area behind my 4Runner while still having the hatch open. Many set up options.
Thanks for watching Steve1 yes, plenty of room to move around and options to fend off wind and rain. p.s. Just a reminder: Our t-shirt fundraiser for TreadLightly ends October 19th. Like that for my 4runner also. Did you try to make the tarp tent a stand alone, like in an emergency when rushing to the store for beer? Are there grommets for poles on the strap end? Thanks.
2:24 when you're tying to the wheels or whatever. Look at that rear door. What if you could just open that door, toss in a strap with a buckle on it, but also some 'bung' a bulge that wouldn't pull through the door weatherstripping. Now you've just tied one part of the front edge in 2 seconds. Then on the other side: same thing. You're either done. Or inside you can clip the two straps together so you can open the doors without losing your tarp. And you're tarp is some useful distance away from that rear door, liftgate. You've also got extra fabric so if you open a lift gate later you won't have a problem. Just thinking out loud. And I think I'll do this to my tarp.
I use this tarp as well. It is great. Have you seen the REDCAMP waterproof car awning shelter? It has sides that can come down to ground level. Also there is a KELTY backroads shelter that looks pretty good.
I have used the heck out of mine. Has held up awesome. Thank you for the pole reference. Going to order some now. I agree the included poles are to heavy
My question with this kind of set up is. So after you are done sleeping and cooking for the night, you want to take your car out to explore, buy something etc. Do you have to take the whole thing down again? Is it still useful if the car is suddenly taken off the picture? Could you easily attach it to a tree or leave part of it on the floor and would it still work if another person were to need it?
Thanks for the video! Interesting tarp set up, that's the first time I've seen one of them. I will be checking these out to see if it would work well for us.
The only thing I don't like about tarps is having a spider web of guy lines stretched all over camp. With an awning you sacrifice some coverage and lose the different configuration options, but the convenience is hard to beat.
@@WanderlostOverland Just kidding with you friend. Hope it gave you a chuckle. I got one of these coming for my old Land Rover based on your review. Thanks so much. Happy Easter!
@@lonecamper1806 it just doesn’t. You connect it it the rack and then through your rims or bumper on the side and it’s pretty snug. We still use ours today and love it!
thanks for the review. How well would this work with a soft top Jeep? Does it really need to use the roof rack straps or will the side straps provide enough tension across the rear of the vehicle?
You can close it but the tarp does slope down when you do. We've since put a grommet in the center of the tarp near where the hatch holds it up. We can insert a pole there to keep the tarp up and tight when the hatch is closed.
Do you have a problem with the back door opening completely when you pull the slumberjack tight? I used it once and in order to keep the tarp from flapping in the wind. When I tightened all guide lines. The back door would not full open. I guess if I were to leave it loose, it would not be a big deal. Did you have any problems at first, at all? Thanks for the video.
We had the same problem at first. After a few times setting it up we developed a system that would keep the door all open and the tarp fairly tight. Thanks for watching!
I've been looking for poles and saw the Green Elephant poles on Amazon. I've been hesitant to get them as I had a different brand previously where the twist action wasn't working properly. Looks like you recommend them?
Bowline knot instructions is the real bonus here ;)
You guys are truly the best - funny, honest , and enjoyable to watch. Even got one of my daughters watching you now. Thanks for your channel
Awesome! Thank you!
You guys are funny!! Gotta get more of the two of you going back and forth !!

@@jotsingh8917 I can’t remember for sure, but I think I have set it up free standing when I first got it.
In my humble opinion....excellent review Sir. Outland On.
Thanks!!!

Thanks for the review. I didn’t know this existed. Looks like a great budget option for a lot of people. Looks like a bit of a hassle to set up though
Well explained video , very helpful thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!

Great to hear!
Great idea being as you work/cook off the back of the vehicle and not the side.
thanks for the share only question you said comes with steaks didn't see a barbecue
David Ellenbaum 🤣 okay, how about tent peg or spike? He didn’t make steaks 🥩, but he cooked up some fantastic brats on that trip!

Thanks for watching! Yup, we get a lot of good use out of this tarp.
Just purchased this hoping to use it after the corona virus madness ends lol. Thanks for the review
Thanks for sharing. This can be rigged with any tarp and dual pole setup.
@2:33 - Its a caped crusader!!!!
4:07 How were you able to extend the Green Elephant all the way pass 7-feet? The silver version has a maximum height of 4'11"

OVRLXND An awning was a little outside of our budget right now, but they are nice.
Unless you have sides on your awning… you only get good coverage at high noon.
With a tarp you can configure it to your needs.
Great video. Thanks. Can one person set this up without too much trouble?
I have several times. Kinda a pain until you figure out what works for you.
Gil Draper Mark sets it up by himself, while I am setting up the tent.
This works on our Honda Civic
Good video, thanks for sharing ✌
Thanks for watching!
No hammer in that rig?
Of course we have a hammer, or two. Why get one out when there's plenty of big rooks just laying about?
@@WanderlostOverland Just kidding with you friend. Hope it gave you a chuckle. I got one of these coming for my old Land Rover based on your review. Thanks so much. Happy Easter!
Could you use 4 poles with this tarp and pull rear of vehicle under tarp? That way it’s free standing so vehicle can be driven?
Sure, we do that very thing sometimes.
@@WanderlostOverland Excellent! Thank you for the reply! 🙏😄
how do you prevent rain water from getting in under the roof edge?

Hey Guys, so I would love an update on the tarp, how's it holding up and whether you still use it? Thanks Wes.
Holding up great! We use it all the time.
May I humbly recommend theraband captured self-tensioning guylines? I’ve been using them for years on my backpacking tarps, and they’re easy to make.
Great tip!
thanks for the review. How well would this work with a soft top Jeep? Does it really need to use the roof rack straps or will the side straps provide enough tension across the rear of the vehicle?
It should work on a soft top.
My tarp didn't come with the straps to attach to the wheels. Any recommendations are appreciated.
Bungees, paracord, or maybe get nylon webbed strap with some buckles and sew on yourself.
Could you just do this with a regular tarp and two poles and line? And just attach it to the roof rack with some carabiners?
Probably.
Are you able to close the hatch/trunk once it's set up? or will it fall apart?
You can close it but the tarp does slope down when you do. We've since put a grommet in the center of the tarp near where the hatch holds it up. We can insert a pole there to keep the tarp up and tight when the hatch is closed.
use an A frame setup and it won't catch any rain

Any update on this?
Still working great and no rips!
I bought one of these and the instructions warn that the straps can scratch your vehicle’s paint. Have you guys experienced this?
Nope, no scratches here. They may be due to sand and grit being on the strap and the webbing moving in the wind.
Can you open and close the back hatch with it setup?
Yes but when the hatch is down it does loosen up where you have to readjust the tiedowns.
I've been looking for poles and saw the Green Elephant poles on Amazon. I've been hesitant to get them as I had a different brand previously where the twist action wasn't working properly. Looks like you recommend them?
They lock very securely. Yes, recommended.
How well would this work on an fj? Does the rear hatch need hold up the tarp, and would i even be able to open the rear door?
Jake Waddoups it works with a swing out door too. Mark tried it out last night and posted pic to fb.
Where did you get those additional poles that telescope out? Do you have a link?
We got them off Amazon. Just do a search for Green Elephant poles and they'll pop right up.
Would the roadhouse tarp and screen work with an fj ? I use your diy awning design for the side of my cruiser i want something for the back.
Yup, it'll work with a up-swing hatch or a to-the-side door.
How can i get extra tarp poles? My buddy ran mine over
Universal ones from Amazon or an outdoor store.
are you still using this tarp? long term review?
We use it all the time! No rips, very little stretching when it's wet.
@@WanderlostOverland Thanks
Damn sir you remind me of Earl Bassett!
Hmmm, I can see it a little -Merri
