I bought the same set from ukbumpkeys for around 70 quid, if my memory serves me right 🙃. The spoon like pick I couldn't find any use for it and the hook with flat top werent agreeing with me at all so we had to ask Dremel to help us. After a minor makeover it became my go to pick. One of my favourite things about this set is how nice those handles feel in your hand, being thinner then my Sparrows set I still get an amazing feedback from them. Nice vid Ash 👌.
I just pulled the trigger and ordered a set. I have a video in the bag (#32) I think comparing the Genesis set from covert instruments to a chinese set I purchased to to replace my broken rake. Gonna scrap that video and make a new comparison video when the Peterson set arrives. Thanks for sharing.
I have in my possession just 1 Peterson medium hook, I won that in a giveaway at the beginning of last year. I will say that I do love picking with it and I can understand why you mainly seem to use Peterson. This pick set looks really nice and apart from the colour of that one pick I can't really find a fault at all. As always another fantastic review.
I'd say the color variations are annoying to me, but definitely not a deal breaker. Some of the finishing inconsistencies are more bothersome, but as long as I can clean them up quickly enough, I can get over it.. wouldn't expect those issues at their price point however 🤔. I like Peterson picks and have their number 1, 7, gem, and deforest hooks in 0.025”, 0.018”, and 0.015” and a decent number of their rakes in 0.025”. Other than some weird stuff that comes out of Peterson I think their picks are about the best, though I do also have picks from numerous other manufacturers Peterson handles are something that is just unmatched anywhere else.
I've tried most of the main companies, and Peterson is my favorite for sure. It helps that I'm in the States, so they're much cheaper over here. Have you ever tried their lifter pick? Nothing else quite like it, excellent feedback. Really like that American Lock!
I have the Peterson lifter pick, it is very under rated, but can be very handy to lift a short pin to shear that maybe hiding behind a longer pin. Helpful at times to lift a short pin in the number one position as well. Not the easiest to navigate the keyway at times, but can come in very handy. I don't think I have ever seen the lifter pick reviewed.
The differences in color and handle stamping would bother the hell out of me. The deep etch wouldn’t bother me much on rakes for the reasons you’ve stated. But then I’m a bit obsessive compulsive about things like that. The handle colors or stamp location in no way effects the way the pick operates, but it is a little off putting.
I hope you read this. I want you to know that I enjoy your videos, and that I can’t stop watching or searching for more of your videos. I think your videos and your personality are the most enjoyable on TH-cam compared to other lock-picking channels I’ve watched. I was very pleasantly surprised about how wary you were about things that might make irritating sounds in your video because most people don’t seem to express that concern when filming their videos, and I’m very sensitive to sound. Somethings about your personality and how you talk also seems more amiable and enjoyable to me than other channel hosts. I think part of it is that your accent and how you speak is more homely to me compared to the way that presenters in other channels speak. I’m sure that varies between people. I’ve seen many people enjoy LockPickingLawyer’s videos, and say that how he talks and his videos are very enjoyable and relaxing. I don’t mean to insult another person while complimenting someone else, and I only mean to iterate how people have different preferences when I say that how LockPickingLawyer talked always sounded bothersome to me. There seems to be every reason to like your channel.
I can only agree with everything Emily writes so eloquently (and punctuates so flawlessly). High production values and a touch of Bristol accent 👌. I have a small tube of these slim picks but I'm scared to use them. The screw tubes are great, too.

I keep hearing people say that Peterson has good quality picks, and that their product is good, but I’ve never been able to identify why they are favoured among others, and why Peterson charge so expensively. I implore you to tell why they are. Their profiles seem to be not very different from other brands’, their pick handles seem as well as any other, and the side profile of the picks are quite wide, and they don’t seem to have any slimline picks to accommodate more constricted keyways.

I wouldn’t use Peterson over all my other picks as the range isn’t good enough for my needs in the sizes I like BUT the steel is excellent and and the handles are just right. I only asked you those questions because I’ve heard so many people in the community talk about Peterson Picks as if they are generally better than picks sold by other companies. Do you think the steel matters that much? I consider most picks to be consumables, and I doubt the difference between 301 stainless steel, spring steel, government steel, and max yield or high yield steel matters that much. If the pick breaks, you’ll have to replace it all the same, and I doubt that how strong the steel is, makes so great of a difference in how quickly your tool breaks and how much money you spend to replace it if you have picks made with competently durable steel.
For me Peterson picks are great, I love the handles and I find the feedback is good. Quality has been good in my experience, however I did receive 1 pick which felt like it missed all the finishing steps and had rough edges. Some things really turn me off about Peterson - reports about some of the owners beliefs about certain types of people for one; and generally bad attitude about customer service issues, particularly when it comes to shipping issues. When it comes to peterson’s sets, there is a very minimal discount when you buy their sets vs single. Usually if there is a single pick you don’t want from the set, it’s better to buy individual, which is exactly why I would avoid this kit - I don’t care for the rakes at all and I would prioritize a few other profiles over the other hooks that come in this set.

Hi Lock Noob, Agree with everything you say, love the feel and texture of the handles, the "Govt" steel is possibly a misnomer, or a marketing ploy, but the picks last us for years, so the steel is really good - they don't need a full tang - never had one snap at the etching either. Profiles are some of the best in the Industry, like yourself, I like the Gem, the profile is very telling on the tip of the pin. Unlike yourself, I do like the flat tip on the No1 pick - doesn't want to roll off the pin, and can often slide under a picked pin. Seems there can be variations in handles etc. some of my handles have RSA molded in, does that mean Republic of South Africa? All in all, they are great picks.
Regarding the Govt. Steel: BosnianBill has a video about that (video 1130): According to Bill it's 420 stainless. (Given his engineering background, i believe him. 😉) So, yeah: There may be some marketing in it, but it's probably also an actual material spec. of sorts.
@@matt79de Thanks for that, I looked it up. 420 stainless is used apparently for scalpel tips etc. It is very tough and durable, and that is why I guess it lasts so long without snapping or distorting. I believe Bill had a falling out with Peterson - maybe about the price ...?
almost every single one of my Petersons that have broke snap right there by the handle. not sure if the etch has anything to do with it because if have some that you can barely see the etch and they've broke in the same spot. I think it's just a manufacturing defect and they need to add more metal by the handle or have the metal the length of the handle to. I've noticed on the yellowish Orange strike picks if you hold them up to the light the metal only extends to the hole in the handle. So I feel like if they ran the metal all the way through the handle it would stop the snapping by the handle. But none the less they're still great picks just some minor issues.
I would imagine that the one slightly off color (pink) pick is what they consider to be a persons typical “go to” pick and altered the color to make it easy to find quickly in the kit.
I have never had a problem with them breaking at the stamp before. They do sometimes bend a little before the tip. That is really the only reason I have had to replace them. They take hour's of abuse.
I like the Reach profile from other manufacturers but I've been a bit concerned about their potential flimsines in my clumsy heavy hands. The Peterson one seems a little sturdier so I might be tempted to get one as well as buy a few more of their hooks. I never use rakes or similar, kinetic tools and the like, so if I bought these as a set then half of them would never be used. I'd look for individual units to build up my own frankenpick collection. I don't think I have any 18 thousandths Petersons yet, so perhaps it's time.
Those are plastic injected mold handles 13:28. It takes more dye to make it darker. The plastic mixture was simply was low on dye & they came out pink. Why they sold them at 8$ a pick is beyond me. Aussies probably got a deal. If Peterson shipped me that in the USA I wouldn't pay for it. I'm very particular. Those handles are proably nylon. I got chinese knockoffs w/out the name heat stamped.
Considering that the etch goes more than halfway through the pick, I'd have all 5 replaced. I've seen even the rakes snap, due to flexing side to side during simple raking, because we are not machines and can't do perfect zero degree movements.
I wish the offset ball were stronger. even the .025 is too thin and bends easy. if they had a thinker option as well would make it one of the better style picks. I love Peterson tho but I wish the metal went the length of the handle but they're still my go to
i like the size of the handles, but also always annoyed about the handle finish. it happend, that these little plastic pieces at the transition from handle to pick steel fell into a lock. so i had to finish the handle with a box cutter, to remove this imperfection (small piece of plastic). i exspect more quality compared to the price
Pros for Peterson: 1. Their handles are really good 2. They are durable, but this is also due to the shaft size that is significantly larger than others Cons: 1. Their shafts are fairly thick 2. Their QC sucks 3. Awful customer service 4. Pricey Pros Multipick: 1. Thinner profiles 2. Top quality. No unfinished pick, no QC issue, quality is always there. 3. I love their leather cases Cons: 1. They are not cheap but you pay for the quality and the peace of mind. Personally I have the gem in .018 from Peterson as this profile is not available anywhere else. But for the rest, my case is entirely filled with MP picks.

@@sebastiand152 The Peterson handles are significantly larger so that may help. Personally, I noticed that my hand’s fatigue was more related to my posture than the pick. When my elbow rests on the arm from my office chair, I can pick for hours. However, when I am on basic chair with my elbow unsupported, I can get tired very quickly.
I've been looking for an 18thou set. Maybe this one is a possibility. I thought that the Peterson Gem pick was quite a bit more shallow than the one you have here. Maybe there's different sizes of that profile.
As far as Peterson picks are concerned: I do like them, but i cannot say that i love them. In my opinion they are good, but overrated. (Not sure if they are overpriced.) I tend to go with BosnianBills' advice: Buy the picks you want, not sets. Because sets will give you picks you don't like, but have to pay a lot for. I do have a nice selection of the hook ilk (including gems) in 15 and 18 thousands and i'm happy with them. I agree, that, as a european, you shouldn't worry about the 25 thousands guys at all. Can't speak to any breaking issues, haven't broken a single pick (yet). Imo the fact that sucks most about Peterson picks is obtaining them. Kind of odd that they don't have a shop set up in Europe. 🙄 Ash: Thanks for the shopping tips. Got mine from the netherlands so far, but i will definitely check out the Aussies for the next buy...

when i bought some peterson picks in an 18thou set of 4 hooks, the inconsistency in the handles did annoy me. but what annoyed me was that the gem and h1 had no finishing on the pick itself at all and had really sharp edges. I dont expect a perfect hand sanded mirror shine but the last thing i expected, especially on picks that cost so much, is sharp edges. the steel is really stong i find that they have good weight, balance and are comfortable but with how sharp they were, really left a sour taste with that pricetag.
It's personal preference. If I buy a set, they need to look like a set. Obviously the set you have is not from the same lot. It perceived as something throw together without much thought. Or it was a lot of thought going into it that this was done on purpose to get rid of old inventories. The logo and color differences really gets me. Aside from the off color one, the one with logo in the middle has color variation. Those color differences could be from material aging. Looks like they mix and match different lots of same style + mixing styles.
@@LockNoob in one video he read a letter from Petersons asking him to review a set of picks and when he was done please send them back. In another video he reviewed a set of picks that seemed to make no sense as a set and seemed to be cheaper bought separately. For the giveaway he gave not only the set he reviewed but every Peterson pick that he had.
What I don't get about the euro sets made in America (and Canada I guess) is the amount of rakes they put in them. Except for a couple of really cheap padlocks I don't think I own a single rakable lock. The only use I have for a rake is to lazily get a false set. And I noticed that you too demonstrated the "euro rakes" on American locks. A better selection in hooks would be so much better than a full array of rakes in almost every set. It just makes me buy single picks. As for the deep etching of the part number: I actually broke pick right there a few days ago (0.015 hook). But to be fair, it was several years old and had seen a lot of use so I don't think it's a huge problem.
i'm from Austria and i've raked my apartment door lock (not a padlock) with a city rake. so i disagree that they are useless i don't own this set, but i really like the look of it. it's probably too expensive for me tho, i'm not a locksmith, or a thief, so i don't make any money off this hobby xD ;)
@@kapa1611 I'm not saying rakes are universally useless in Europe, but ever "euro set" comes with an abundance of rakes and a minimum of hooks. But what you need as a lock sporter (especially in Europe) is an abundance of hooks and a few rakes since most of us is not content with just raking easy locks. So if you buy one set you're pretty much set with rakes, so buying further sets make little sense. Not sure I'm expressing my self very well here, but to sum up: I would like to see more well balanced sets without rakes. Oh, and PS: You should change your apartment lock :-)
@@LockNoob Yeah, I didn't really mean to attack rakes as a tool. They are great for their use and I do have a fair number myself. My point was just that the various sets generally contain a number of rakes, often the same ones whereas the hooks tend to vary. Personally I would like to see more sets with a better selection for SPP instead of yet another selection of common rakes, if you see what I mean.

Peterson color-code their pick handles to the thicknesses of the steel blades, I don't know why they choose specific colours of course but you can tell from the HANDLE colour (pink/lilac, blue, black, or red) what gauge the pick will be
Why doesn't Peterson stamp the part number on the handle plastic, that would be a lot easier than etching the metal (and resolve any potential metal weaknesses caused by their etching)? For the price, those tag ends of plastic by where the shaft leaves the handle is rather poor quality control (a utility knife would take care of those easily, but at that price, is it reasonable for me to expect that that plastic should not be there?). And the mismatching of handle stamping styles, and that one pinkish handle, was quite jarring for something marketed AS A SET - but if I was following Bosnian Bill's advice and buying only the picks I needed/wanted and not sets, I wouldn't care about mismatched handle stamping design and colors so much / at all. One question - for me to begin exploring legal lockpicking (starting with basic Master Locks to really get a little confidence, especially as I can get those easily and cheaply enough here in Minneapolis), would anyone recommend any other of these Peterson picks besides the Gem? (I don't want to buy a cheapie Amazon beginners' set, because if the quality turns out to be awful, I will not give legal lockpicking a go, I am afraid, because if the picks don't work well in my hands, I will get frustrated - good quality, yes, but a budget too.)
Standard hook/ short hook and possibly a deforester would be the top 3 picks of choice. You might be surprised but the tension tool in many cases is MORE important than the pick. TOK and BOK tensioners in different thicknesses and styles can make the biggest impact in how long it may take you to open a lock
The tag ends of plastic bother me too, in my opinion they look like the manufacturer does not care about the final appearance of his products. The different logo stamps and the random shades of violent&pink add to that impression.
I am not surprised, given Lock Noob, BosnianBill, and LPL's occasional struggles picking the best sized and styled tensioner for a particular keyway. Again, no cheapie Amazon tension tools for me. Thanks!

The Peterson 7 in .018 is in my opinion the best all around hook. It is the first pick I try in any lock!

Regarding the Govt. Steel: BosnianBill has a video about that (video 1130): According to Bill it's 420 stainless. (Given his engineering background, i believe him. 😉) So, yeah: There may be some marketing in it, but it's probably also an actual material spec. of sorts.
@@matt79de Thanks for that, I looked it up. 420 stainless is used apparently for scalpel tips etc. It is very tough and durable, and that is why I guess it lasts so long without snapping or distorting. I believe Bill had a falling out with Peterson - maybe about the price ...?
almost every single one of my Petersons that have broke snap right there by the handle. not sure if the etch has anything to do with it because if have some that you can barely see the etch and they've broke in the same spot. I think it's just a manufacturing defect and they need to add more metal by the handle or have the metal the length of the handle to. I've noticed on the yellowish Orange strike picks if you hold them up to the light the metal only extends to the hole in the handle. So I feel like if they ran the metal all the way through the handle it would stop the snapping by the handle. But none the less they're still great picks just some minor issues.

I would imagine that the one slightly off color (pink) pick is what they consider to be a persons typical “go to” pick and altered the color to make it easy to find quickly in the kit.

I have never had a problem with them breaking at the stamp before. They do sometimes bend a little before the tip. That is really the only reason I have had to replace them. They take hour's of abuse.

I like the Reach profile from other manufacturers but I've been a bit concerned about their potential flimsines in my clumsy heavy hands. The Peterson one seems a little sturdier so I might be tempted to get one as well as buy a few more of their hooks. I never use rakes or similar, kinetic tools and the like, so if I bought these as a set then half of them would never be used. I'd look for individual units to build up my own frankenpick collection. I don't think I have any 18 thousandths Petersons yet, so perhaps it's time.
Those are plastic injected mold handles 13:28. It takes more dye to make it darker. The plastic mixture was simply was low on dye & they came out pink. Why they sold them at 8$ a pick is beyond me. Aussies probably got a deal. If Peterson shipped me that in the USA I wouldn't pay for it. I'm very particular. Those handles are proably nylon. I got chinese knockoffs w/out the name heat stamped.
Considering that the etch goes more than halfway through the pick, I'd have all 5 replaced. I've seen even the rakes snap, due to flexing side to side during simple raking, because we are not machines and can't do perfect zero degree movements.

I wish the offset ball were stronger. even the .025 is too thin and bends easy. if they had a thinker option as well would make it one of the better style picks. I love Peterson tho but I wish the metal went the length of the handle but they're still my go to

i like the size of the handles, but also always annoyed about the handle finish. it happend, that these little plastic pieces at the transition from handle to pick steel fell into a lock. so i had to finish the handle with a box cutter, to remove this imperfection (small piece of plastic). i exspect more quality compared to the price

Pros for Peterson:
1. Their handles are really good
2. They are durable, but this is also due to the shaft size that is significantly larger than others
Cons:
1. Their shafts are fairly thick
2. Their QC sucks
3. Awful customer service
4. Pricey
Pros Multipick:
1. Thinner profiles
2. Top quality. No unfinished pick, no QC issue, quality is always there.
3. I love their leather cases
Cons:
1. They are not cheap but you pay for the quality and the peace of mind.
Personally I have the gem in .018 from Peterson as this profile is not available anywhere else. But for the rest, my case is entirely filled with MP picks.

I have a lot of Multipick and after some picking time, I struggle with the handle. Perhaps, I will buy some most common Peterson pick to relax my hand a little. Or does shrinking tube or something else would help?
@@sebastiand152 The Peterson handles are significantly larger so that may help. Personally, I noticed that my hand’s fatigue was more related to my posture than the pick. When my elbow rests on the arm from my office chair, I can pick for hours. However, when I am on basic chair with my elbow unsupported, I can get tired very quickly.

I've been looking for an 18thou set. Maybe this one is a possibility. I thought that the Peterson Gem pick was quite a bit more shallow than the one you have here. Maybe there's different sizes of that profile.

As far as Peterson picks are concerned: I do like them, but i cannot say that i love them. In my opinion they are good, but overrated. (Not sure if they are overpriced.) I tend to go with BosnianBills' advice: Buy the picks you want, not sets. Because sets will give you picks you don't like, but have to pay a lot for. I do have a nice selection of the hook ilk (including gems) in 15 and 18 thousands and i'm happy with them. I agree, that, as a european, you shouldn't worry about the 25 thousands guys at all. Can't speak to any breaking issues, haven't broken a single pick (yet). Imo the fact that sucks most about Peterson picks is obtaining them. Kind of odd that they don't have a shop set up in Europe. 🙄

The point i wanted to make is, that, especially with Petersons, knowing what you want and only getting what you want can/will save you a lot of money.
The Hook 7 in .018 is my friend to the end
when i bought some peterson picks in an 18thou set of 4 hooks, the inconsistency in the handles did annoy me. but what annoyed me was that the gem and h1 had no finishing on the pick itself at all and had really sharp edges. I dont expect a perfect hand sanded mirror shine but the last thing i expected, especially on picks that cost so much, is sharp edges. the steel is really stong i find that they have good weight, balance and are comfortable but with how sharp they were, really left a sour taste with that pricetag.
I had the same experiences- one of my picks just felt like it came off the cutting line and missed all the finishing process… weird QC.
I do wish the QC was more consistent

It's personal preference. If I buy a set, they need to look like a set. Obviously the set you have is not from the same lot. It perceived as something throw together without much thought. Or it was a lot of thought going into it that this was done on purpose to get rid of old inventories. The logo and color differences really gets me. Aside from the off color one, the one with logo in the middle has color variation. Those color differences could be from material aging. Looks like they mix and match different lots of same style + mixing styles.
I should be more bothered than I am.., sad to say but I’m just used to them having QC issues

In another video he reviewed a set of picks that seemed to make no sense as a set and seemed to be cheaper bought separately. For the giveaway he gave not only the set he reviewed but every Peterson pick that he had.

What I don't get about the euro sets made in America (and Canada I guess) is the amount of rakes they put in them. Except for a couple of really cheap padlocks I don't think I own a single rakable lock. The only use I have for a rake is to lazily get a false set. And I noticed that you too demonstrated the "euro rakes" on American locks. A better selection in hooks would be so much better than a full array of rakes in almost every set. It just makes me buy single picks.
As for the deep etching of the part number: I actually broke pick right there a few days ago (0.015 hook). But to be fair, it was several years old and had seen a lot of use so I don't think it's a huge problem.
i'm from Austria and i've raked my apartment door lock (not a padlock) with a city rake. so i disagree that they are useless
i don't own this set, but i really like the look of it. it's probably too expensive for me tho, i'm not a locksmith, or a thief, so i don't make any money off this hobby xD ;)
@@kapa1611 I'm not saying rakes are universally useless in Europe, but ever "euro set" comes with an abundance of rakes and a minimum of hooks. But what you need as a lock sporter (especially in Europe) is an abundance of hooks and a few rakes since most of us is not content with just raking easy locks.
So if you buy one set you're pretty much set with rakes, so buying further sets make little sense.
Not sure I'm expressing my self very well here, but to sum up: I would like to see more well balanced sets without rakes.
Oh, and PS: You should change your apartment lock :-)
I own plenty of rakeable locks, and more I can rake to a false set, so I personally like a mix, BUT, you have to have more hooks as SPP is the best!
@@LockNoob Yeah, I didn't really mean to attack rakes as a tool. They are great for their use and I do have a fair number myself. My point was just that the various sets generally contain a number of rakes, often the same ones whereas the hooks tend to vary. Personally I would like to see more sets with a better selection for SPP instead of yet another selection of common rakes, if you see what I mean.

Peterson color-code their pick handles to the thicknesses of the steel blades, I don't know why they choose specific colours of course but you can tell from the HANDLE colour (pink/lilac, blue, black, or red) what gauge the pick will be

Why doesn't Peterson stamp the part number on the handle plastic, that would be a lot easier than etching the metal (and resolve any potential metal weaknesses caused by their etching)?
For the price, those tag ends of plastic by where the shaft leaves the handle is rather poor quality control (a utility knife would take care of those easily, but at that price, is it reasonable for me to expect that that plastic should not be there?). And the mismatching of handle stamping styles, and that one pinkish handle, was quite jarring for something marketed AS A SET - but if I was following Bosnian Bill's advice and buying only the picks I needed/wanted and not sets, I wouldn't care about mismatched handle stamping design and colors so much / at all.
One question - for me to begin exploring legal lockpicking (starting with basic Master Locks to really get a little confidence, especially as I can get those easily and cheaply enough here in Minneapolis), would anyone recommend any other of these Peterson picks besides the Gem? (I don't want to buy a cheapie Amazon beginners' set, because if the quality turns out to be awful, I will not give legal lockpicking a go, I am afraid, because if the picks don't work well in my hands, I will get frustrated - good quality, yes, but a budget too.)
Standard hook/ short hook and possibly a deforester would be the top 3 picks of choice.
You might be surprised but the tension tool in many cases is MORE important than the pick. TOK and BOK tensioners in different thicknesses and styles can make the biggest impact in how long it may take you to open a lock
The tag ends of plastic bother me too, in my opinion they look like the manufacturer does not care about the final appearance of his products. The different logo stamps and the random shades of violent&pink add to that impression.
I am not surprised, given Lock Noob, BosnianBill, and LPL's occasional struggles picking the best sized and styled tensioner for a particular keyway. Again, no cheapie Amazon tension tools for me. Thanks!
