    I've seen some 5040UB reviews showing screen door pixelation when super close to the screen compared to other 4K projectors, but honestly every other feature is so great that I might be able to get over it. Between the lens memory, contrast ratio and brightness, input lag time, it's hard to beat.

    I bought a cheap $200 amazon Vankyo 510 projector last week for an outdoor football party and while it did the job I wasn’t really impressed when I set it up in my living room. Now I find my self checking 4K projectors this Epson, BenQ and VeiwSonic. My issue is I will only ever have my projector setup in a temporary fashion and not a permanent install so I’m not sure the lense memory would truly be effective for me and my situation. But I still think I may want to upgrade to a 4K unit. Buy once cry once. Thanks for the video.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. To me, the only time you need to use Lens Memory feature is if you have a 2.35:1 or a 2.40:1 cinescope screen and watch both 16:9 and 2.35:1 content on the screen. If you have a 16:9 screen, you will just have grey bars on top and bottom when watching 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 content.

      Thanks James, In the case of the dark Knight it’s just frustrating LOL. You have to pick one format or the other because the projector cannot switch that quickly. Even with my previous Panasonic projector, it had auto switching but it still would not be super affective it’s just annoying that they switch formats within a movie

    Found that most Netflix/ Amazon is projected in 16:9. This is why I made my 170 inch screen at that ratio. If your screen was 16:9 you never have to use the lens memory at all. Of course, you have the bars at top/bottom with no masking on the new ratio's. The un-masked screen is pitch black, so I don't mind a bit.
    The 5040 is one of the few best bang for buck projectors that can fill a large screen and still remain bright. The only problem I have is the 4k content disks are so dark, I prefer watching the BluRay. If you could test some 4k movies and tell me how you accommodate that, or if there is a way to adjust brightness to un-darken them so much, that would be appreciated.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. Yeah I definitely did not want a 16:9 screen as this is what all TV’s are. I didn’t just want a large TV in the theater room, I wanted that super wide cinescope Screen. Everyone has their own preferences. I have no regrets with my 2.35:1

    • @SethPortland
      @SethPortland 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 5040 projector is only 1080p. It just supports 4k input. You can make do with the 1080p content if the 4k stuff is too dark.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically yes because the grey bars are lines of resolution that do not have content in them and when you zoom in, you are not utilizing the full 4K resolution. Can I see that sacrifice? Nope.

That's how I used to watch Dish/TV on my projector. I dropped my Dish TV and went with over the air TV. I have no HDMI or Video out on my TV so I cannot connect to A/V receiver. I think I read online that I can purchase an older Dish TV receiver that has a SAT IN and an Outside Ant in and just connect my Clear TV antenna to the Dish TV receiver which has an HDMI and/or Video out. That way I can then connect to my AV Receiver then the HDMI from the A/V receiver will go to the projector, is that correct. Thank you so much, I know you must be extremely busy.

    Hey Youthman, love ur videos, and ur passion for home theaters. I have a question for u. I noticed that u have wat appears to be a white screen in ur theater room. I’m in the process of upgrading from a 65” tv, to 125” 2:35.1 screen. My room is totally dark, with no light issues. I was gonna buy a ALR screen that is dark to moderate light, becuz I wanted a light gray screen. It seems like the colors pop more, and the contrast is so much nicer on a gray screen. We also watch 3D movies in our theater. I am purchasing an Epson 5040ub, and to achieve that screen diagonal aspect. My projector will be 13 feet from my screen. Which according to the throw calculator is almost as close as I can get it for that screen size. So my picture will be brighter. Can u plz give me ur thoughts. Thank u for ur time and dedication to home theater enthusiast like urself.

    • @Youthman

      Grey screens tend to provide more contrast in exchange for slightly less brightness. I personally have only had two screens, both being white. The grey screen should be fine for your setup as the Epson 5040UB is plenty bright on it's own.

The only thing that I miss that the Panasonic had was the auto lens shift. It would automatically shift the lens when it detected the 2.35:1 ratio. Yes Sir.. Your set up of a 150" 2.35 : 1 is exactly what I was planning to do because a 120" 16:9 fits it almost perfectly top to bottom. My question is what is the throw distance to make this set up work with this projector and the projector height? Epson tried to tell me that the 5040ub would not project 2.35:1 !....and that I would have to by a 6040 and an optional lens!

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are right and wrong. The 5040UB projects a 16:9 native image. So to get a 2.35:1 aspect, you would zoom in the projector to where the grey bars extend above and below the screen as shown in the video. That's the whole point of having the Lens Memory.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James, I’m not familiar with your TV but if you TV zooms in to get rid of the grey bars on top and bottom, the width of your 16:9 screen is not wide enough so it will crop the additional content on the left and right side of the image.
      With my screen, it is much wider than 16:9 so when I zoom in the image, the image completely fills my screen with no cropping and the grey bars on top and bottom are simply above and below my screen and are unseen.

      This is an older video but I likely had this sitting on a platform behind my first row seats to make this tutorial. I don't believe I had installed it in the ceiling yet. The reason for the image spillage is when you are watching a movie that is in a wider aspect ratio than my 2.35:1 screen, the image will extend to the left and the right. Most projectors have digital masking that you can apply to "trim" any bleed over.

    I have a question. I've been doing research on buying a new 75 inch if not larger 4k tv and the prices can easily reach north of 4 grand to get an oled or qled ! I noticed that this projector your reviewing is less than 3 grand and can project 110 inches! My question is ....does the picture quality match that of a tv? Is there lighting issues? Banding,ghosting, flash lighting? And is there any "black" issues?

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have owned 3 projectors over the past 10 years. A mid-tier Projector is not going to have the quality of an OLeD but an OLED isn’t going to be near as immersive as a projection. So you have to pick out what’s more important to you. I had an 82” TV and I never watched it, even when my screen was only 103”. You just can’t replicate that theater experience with a 75” TV.

    • @number1pappy
      @number1pappy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Youthman oh I agree that the picture size of a projector gives you the theater effect that I think everyone wants!! I just got a little excited when I saw the picture quality of your projector and thought that home projectors had come along way! The last time I was even a little serious and looked into home projection (15 years ago)you needed a dedicated dark room and had to have very little light to get a decent picture and that was after spending north of 10 grand and that was for the mid grade ! After sending you the previous question I did a little research and found sadly that yes it has come a long way but,you still need a dark room and there is still an issue with fan noise ! Dont get me wrong I'm not knocking the current projectors. I just dont have a dark room and I would need to run a projector in my living room that has two windows that do have drapes but my living room is open to rest of house and it would just be impractical to darken entire house to watch it! So sadly the technology is not there yet atleast in my price range! I could go as far as 6 grand but even that doesnt get me a projector with enough lumens to run during the day and not be washed out by the ambient light! I'm genuinely bummed!...lol!! Its going to kill me to have to buy a 5 or 6 grand 82 inch tv to get a big picture that at the end of the day really in the grand scope of things is not that bigger than a 75 inch! So I guess I will just stick with my original plan of buying the biggest best tv I can and upgrade my sound system and call it a day! Maybe technology will speed up and make it possible to produce a projector that fits my needs in the next couple years, who knows!...lol!! Thanks for the videos and fir sharing your knowledge! I will most definitely have more questions for you as I upgrade my system over the next few months!

    Does the image degrade when you zoom in using the lens?

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, but at 2.35:1, you are however not using all of the pixels. The only way around that is to purchase a Anamorphic Lens and Sled but often times the lens costs more than your projector. I have no desire to double the cost of my projection. This hobby is expensive enough as it is. Looks fantastic to me.

    Hi Youthman : Can you please confirm if 5040UB can upscale normal 1080p content ? I know Denon Receivers do allow upscaling to 4k, but I wanted to see if Epson does it. To be clear I am talking about a 1080p content -> upscaled to 4k.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the 5040UB will upscale 1080p Content to 4Ke using Pixel Shifting Technology. This is taken directly from their website:
      "Epson PRO-UHD with 4K Enhancement Technology1 - accepts 4K UHD content and upscales non-4K content to deliver amazing lifelike images with resolution that exceeds Full HD"
      Epson 5040UB Projector - amzn.to/2CVrSR4

    • @SethPortland
      @SethPortland 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The projector is native 1080p. It will upscale, but the result will be a blurrier image due to how the projector displays 4k content. It will be sharper if you do not upscale using this particular projector.
      The projector accepts a 4k signal and performs special processing to achieve "4k", even though it is only 1080p. It does this by taking a 4k image and dropping every other pixel. You can picture a checkerboard in your mind. The projector will then produce 2 1080p images out of this checkerboard. The un-dropped pixels from the even lines will go to one 1080p image, and the odd lines will go to the other 1080p image.
      When it projects to the screen, it will output the first 1080p image, shift the screen diagonally by half a pixel, and then "overlaps" the second image. It does this "shifting" very quickly to perform the illusion of 4k. It actually has about half of the 4k image data. Better than 1080p, but not 4k.
      It's kind of its own thing because it's hard to classify 2 offset 1080p images. This technology is also how the projector can support 3D content. That is e-shift technology. Each manufacturer has their own term for it.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A few reasons for that:
      1) My Nikon D7100 records in 1080p. The D500 is $2200. I’m taking donations for a 4K camera if you want to contribute 😂
      2) the free version of Davinci Resolve exports in 1080p. I could upgrade to edit with Premiere Pro but that would be $50/month.
      3) Editing in 4K requires much more resources, hard drive space and takes longer to export videos.
      I just don’t see the value in my videos being shot in 4K.

    Hello Youthman,
    I recently bought an EPSON 5040 Ub 4K projector and tried the same steps you had done, but I was not successful. When I tried changing the zoom, I could not alter the width without also changing the length, making me believe that I couldn’t get the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I am just setting the lens up without playing a movie, so maybe that has something to do with it? I really like the look of a 2.35:1 screen and the EPSON manual itself says you cannot project to this aspect ratio so I was excited to see this video but now I am worried! Please help!

      To setup 2.35:1, play a 2.35:1 movie and simply hit pause on a part of the movie that is easy to see all 4 edges of the screen. Then make your adjustments in the Epson until it fills the entire width and height of your screen

    Been thinking about upgrading and purchasing the same projector. My last projector (2000) was a Sim2 HT300 which was a 720p. Love the Epson, but dang way too big, 23 pounds too. I didn't see the audio in and out on the back?

      The 5040UB certainly isn’t a small projector. O thought my previous Panasonic AE4000u was large until the 5040 arrived.

      @@Jrbrass If your receiver doesn't have HDMI, I would highly recommend upgrading it. You can even pick up a quality used receiver for less than a few hundred and would likely be a huge upgrade over the one you have now.
      Then you can run all of your sources (Bluray, Cable TV, AppleTV, etc) into the receiver, and then use the HDMI Out to go to the projector. I don't see any need to run audio to your projector. Hope that helps.

      Thank you, will definitely look into getting a A/V receiver with HDMI inputs. I do have a question through. Looking for a new projector, for mine only goes to 720p. Other than watching movies, I would also like to watch regular TV through my projector as well. I know everything is through the receiver, but noticed on my Hisense F42K20E TV, it has 3 HDMI ports. However, I do not see any HDMI out? I do see an Digital Audio Out, but don't see anything in sorts of a Video Out that I can run through the A/V receiver then to the projector. Am I missing something? Thank you so much!

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A newer receiver will allow you to use it as a central hub. Plug your Blu-ray player, cable box, AppleTV, PS4 or Xbox) into the Receiver, then one HDMI to your projector. Then you simply switch between those sources on the receiver which sends the appropriate image to the projector and the appropriate sound to your speakers.

      Hi James, it depends on if you are going with a 16:9 or 2.35:1 screen. Take a look at this calculator - www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-Home_Cinema_5040UB-projection-calculator-pro.htm

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mount the projector at 18', you should be able to throw a 135" image. I'm not sure how accurate the calculator is though because my screen is about 4' off the front wall and my room is 19' deep so that makes my screen around 15' from the screen to my back wall and my projector lens is mounted just outside the wall where we cut a rectangle in the wall for the lens to shoot through. So I'm throwing a 150" diagonal image on a 2.35:1 screen at probably 16'.

    • @jr62inhometheater98

      You are correct. This is what I call the “poor man’s anamorphic setup”. Because the grey bars are pixels in the 1080p that are not being used, with 2.35:1 content you aren’t using the entire 1080p Resolution.
      The only way to use all of the native resolution for 2:35:1 comets to is to use an anamorphic lens (which often cost as much if not more than the projector itself), Then you have to purchase a sled that allows you to move the anamorphic lens in front of the projector lens When you were watching 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 content. And then you had to figure out how old that sled work? You either have to manually move the sled every time the content changes, or you need a motorized sled what’s that cost even more money.
      So as you can see, unless you have very deep pockets using lens memory With modern day projectors is a great and affordable alternative
