  • The Scott Road Station was the end of the line. It and the bridge over the Fraser River were still new when this Video was taken.

      I dont think ever
      It basically doubles as the SkyTrains little theme tune and its super iconic. There would be HUGE backlash if the takeoff chime was ever changed and theres no reason to.

      I am glad you are getting some interesting information out of my already historic recording. The reason for me to take the video at that time was a very good friend of mine (the man on crutches, long deceased). He was interested in anything concerning trains and came up from Phoenix, Arizona to see the new technology used on the Sky-Train first hand.

    I was studying at UBC for my Master in Civil Engineering in 1990. There was only one line of the SkyTrain, and it did not serve UBC. I resided at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) Residence on Heather and 12th Street, and the rent was only CDN $230 per room per month. Vancouver was the third expensive city ( in terms of rent rate) in Canada after Toronto and Montreal. The city is now the most expensive in the country. I took the No. 9 or No. 10 bus to UBC. I only used the SkyTrain to go to Metrotown or downtown Vancouver, but that was after a sort bus ride from Broadway and Heather Street to the nearest SkyTrain station (I forget the name). It was more convenient for me to ride my mountain bike from VGH Residence to downtown than to take the SkyTrain. I graduated in May 1992 and returned home to Malaysia.

    Seems the switch east of Columbia station was already in place (now used for Millenium line extension). Any idea why it was there in 1990? Dead end?

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can not be sure, but I believe the switch and dead end was placed for operational reasons during the bridge construction. Note: There is no equivalent switch on the eastbound track. However, an extension plan must have been considered at the time, I noticed that the retaining wall on the right, immediately after the tunnel is set back, possibly to make room for that second switch and the east-bound Millennium extension.

    • @VancouverComposer
      @VancouverComposer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Switch 44 on the inbound was built when the original extension was built to Scott Road station. It was just a spur track that went up and ended flush at a retaining wall supporting a street that used to be directly above where the tunnel portal entrance is today. It was occasionally used for storage of a train but not often. When the millennium line extension was built the west side retaining wall had to be slightly moved snd the track realigned slightly in order to accommodate the actual engineering plan. Hence it's not quite the same as it was. Switch 45 on the outbound track was not built, and it's construction began in May 1999 and along with cutting out the existing guideway slabs, took two months to complete. Single tracking service occurred on the line between Scott Road station and Columbia station for all hours of operation seven days a week for this two months period.

    I heard the Skytrain was known to be quiet as it ran. It was apparently due to the "continuess welded rails" and "articulate axles". Was this true?

    • @Landsend-Railroad
      @Landsend-Railroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are in deed fairly quiet and the rail joints are welded. I do not know if the axles have any effect on the lack of noise. What is missing on the skytrain is the growl of the motors and the gears. Since they use linear motors (aluminum plates between rails and a frequency controlled magnet under the cars) there is no gear noise, but a melodical changing of frequency can be heard when they accelerate.

  • @robertebirch1
