Got my first tattoo at 16 under my parents supervision, now here I am at 22 looking up "1st tattoo" advice videos since I wasn't as active in the process and etiquette the first time around 😅
Alexandra I've just spent over £5000 on 2 sleeves to cover the tattoos I got when I was between 14 an 18 I'm 42 now and it's not that I didn't like them but tattooing has come on so far I wanted so new stuff so decided to cover the ones on my arms think I might be having my mid life crisis lol.
Definitely great advice, I just got a tattoo in last month and my tattoo artist informed the same information that you guys just spoke about. All important factors for tattoos !
Don't drink the night before getting one either. Especially if it's a big piece. I remember I came hung over as hell to one of the longest sessions in my life.
Thank you for making this video! I am getting my first tattoo next month and I am excited and nervous! I feel a lot better now about the whole process!
I'm getting my first one this coming weekend. I'm so stoked, for about 5 years I have wanted one. Not the time has come, and as it gets closer I get more nervous. Thank you for the work in out question. I was worried about that. I'm les nervous about getting it after watching this.
Alex Skater , thank you for watching and I'm glad it helped. Some last-minute advice I could give, other than my other video gives, is to be relaxed and remember that after the first couple of minutes your bodies paint the fence kicks in and greatly reduces the pain. Good luck with your tattoo and enjoy the experience. Let me know how it goes
I was a first timer getting a treble clef tattoo on my upper arm. And now I have 4 total at present and also I have just recently booked in for my 5th towards the end of march.
Awesome! I have another video on my channel explaining what to do before you go in for your first tattoo. Enjoy getting your first tattoo and I hope you have a great birthday.
Hey guys, great vid! Do you see many middle age people getting their first tattoos? I'm 42 and will be getting my first one in just a few days. Also, the artist that's doing my tattoo does a lot of dot work tattoos along with traditional...I'm intrigued with his dot work style but just don't know anything about it - thoughts?
Is it rude to bring in a self-drawn design? I'm thinking of getting my first tattoo and I wanted to draw at least the crux of the idea myself but I'm not sure of the etiquette :) This is a really helpful video though, thanks!
Not at all. Every piece of reference is helpful. The artist will be able to draw off of your design. Thanks for watching and I'm glad this helped a little. Have fun with your tattoo :)
Renee DeeVee Nah it would kind of make the tattooist life eaiser, you have what you want, all you have to do is show the design and try get your artisit to agree
To compare tattoes to annoying scratches and ciggarette burns is such a spot on comparison. It will rly help ppl imagining what it feels like. I've honestly never heard anyone explain it any better than that ! :) Some ppl just don't care to answer non-tattoed ppls questions, and just telling them "you'll know when u do it" or "it can't be explained" and, sure, ofc no one have the same pain tolerance. But you can always try to explain imo and you did great :)
thank you for your opinion and meant a lot to me a good specially helped me to because I'm getting my tattoo this Thursday I'm super excited and thank you for the whole pain situation I meant a lot and thank you for helping me a new beginner I've always wanted to tattoo to you my whole life finally getting 1 I'm getting a sunflower on my chest a little bit on my collarbone I did my research and it says it's going to hurt but not that bad so I can do this and thank you guys so much for your explaining it to me it meant a lot
Kayla Martin glad we could help. I have a Nother video on my channel that explains what you should do before you go in for your first tattoo. I wish you the best of luck on your first tattoo you'll do great :)
Victoria, depending on the outline weight, tattoos can be gone over a few times in their lifespan. Just chose your artist wisely so you don't have to get a cover up.
Thanks sincerely, I think this is the most concise and informative video on the subject that I've watched, definitely deserves more views. I am confused about one thing though. You talked about how the sun can cause the color of a tattoo to fade. Does that include blacks (like black becoming grayer) or is it more like other colors (reds, blues) fading away? Thanks again
Done 7 hours today had to give up .. big chest piece every think was goin ok TIL they got to my nipples and sternum damn .... I got high tolerance to pain but Wundt do tha again for a million dollars my body went in shock cudnt stop shaking haha , kno the drive back home to Chicago
sabreena ghuman , yes, though the fading isn't as noticeable as a color tattoo. The sun is going to fade your tattoo and depending on how saturated the ink is in the skin, the black Tattoo can turn into a really dark grey.
I work as a restobar and I was telling the bartender that I'm getting my first tattoo and the first thing he said was that I need to be drunk at the appointment to handle the pain as well as taking a lot of painkillers before hand. he also said that that's what everyone did back in the day
3 of my 6 tattoos are on my ribs and I really didn't find them at all painful. I love the tattoo experience and really once you start to relax about 10-15 minutes in its sort of like meditation.
New subscriber here! Awesome! all the questions in my head has now been answered!! Im getting my first tatt in 2 days! i heard inner biceps hurt really bad
Christina Winkler , The outer arm is really easy to take, it's not really about how painful it is it's more about sitting through a really annoying pain. You will be absolutely fine I promise.
Silly Kitty , behind the ear is quite a weird spot in my opinion. I didn't like getting it tattooed in the few of my friends thought it hurt as well, but for some reason it either tickles or goes numb for girls. For girls behind the ear tattoos don't hurt at all. Thanks for watching and leaving a positive comment.
I watched and researched videos like these for 3 years before I finally got my tattoo at 20. I also got permission from my mom to have my nose pierced when I was 16 and got it done when I was 19. Sometimes getting courage takes time 😂
The day of my first tattoo (a few days ago) i only ate some toast an hour before..... its a good thing the tattoo only took 20 minutes or so. I was also surprised at how little it hurt for me (my pain tolerance is really messed up and a light poke on the arm hurts a lot)
So glad that I found your channel :) getting first tattoo next month..Just had couple of questions 1) inner wrist or outer? Not just from pain point of view but where will it look better? 2) black and white or colored? I'm thinking mixture of both. Is that a good idea I heard that colored tattoos fade quickly. It's confusing :(
Nishita mac , it all depends on who does your tattoo, I've had a super bright color tattoo on my right arm that has stayed bright for over 10 years. To answer both of your questions, it's whatever looks best for you. Either decision you make will look good.
I would love anyone's advice for my question. I would like four hummingbirds in four different styles( fineline, new school, neotraditional, and traditional). Is it better to have them all done by the same artist or to let the artist pick which style they would like to do?
FanofAlmostEvery , it really would depend on if one artist is proficient in those styles. Most artists try to be as well rounded as possible and use references from the Internet in order to mimic for Jane and understanding of a style that they do not know. So it would be best to ask the artist that you choose to do your tattoo. Thanks for watching
I'm wanting to get my first tattoo in the near future, so I was wondering how the process works before you get it done. Once I find a place/artist that I like, should I call, email, or stop by to make an appointment? I just have no idea how to kickstart the process and would like to know the appropriate etiquette :)
Clare Brady , I would call the shop and ask for the artist or try to message them through email or social media to set up a consultation. The artist will give you further instructions from there
got mine yesterday on my wrist it says stay strong & has a cross. went to the shop took about 40 min & the guy told me I did perfect , didn't really hurt
Great video ! I'm 60 years old and never inked. Just wasn't in my "culture" I have a year old scar on my left forearm that I'm thinking of covering with a simple tattoo. Scar is a single curving line about six inches long. I usually heal up without scarring. This one is a long story. My question is, do tattoos do well over pale scars ? Thanks.
oldsagerat , I cover scars all the time. The heal just like the rest of the skin. If you look through my videos, I made one about covering a friends self harm scars. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.
With a first tattoo, from a artist point of view. What would you recommend, getting a small tattoo or going straight into the deep end and getting a big one?
jessica pattinson , stay confident and you be just fine. Getting tattooed in tough spots is a mental game. Just stay relaxed and keep your mind occupied.
Anthony Solano , not really a good idea in my personal opinion. People assume gang affiliation or prison time or that you have killed someone. Basically making you a social outcast. Also it is a bit shaky about the origins of what the teardrop means because it has changed a few times over the last 30 years.
Eric Merritt , stay relaxed and make sure to breathe. I have a video on my channel of a kid getting his first tattoo on his chest and what his reaction was to it.
Great video guys.. I'm getting my first tattoo I had bought a 2 hour session and today my partner got me another 2 hour session, I want to get a horror character either Michael myers, freedy or chucky haven't quite decided which one . Would 4 hours be too much for a first tattoo for both the person and artist or would it be grand,
Kriss M , I can make a video about that, but it may not be exactly what people want to hear. Honestly, think to yourself and look at your artwork like in my good enough for someone to teach me and what makes me so special that they should teach me. You want an amazing art portfolio and you need to hang around a shop for a while earning the shops trust. Some people if not most work for the shop for free for a few years or pay for their apprenticeship. It could be anywhere from $2000-$15,000 to learn how to tattoo
Kriss M , I love this industry more than anything. I completely understand how hard it is to get into the industry the proper and correct way. If someone can further the progression or being positive impact to this industry, I think that they should get all the help in the world to become a tattoo artist. The reason it is so hard and a lot of things are kept secretive, is because there are a lot of people trying to make money off of the popularity of tattooing. A lot of these people are not artists and have no respect for the industry which creates a lot of issues for the future of tattooing and the long Jevity of our careers. My best advice to you is to sit down and think about if this lifestyle is for you and is it something that you will excel at. I've seen many artist between five and 10 years of tattooing quit because they cannot keep up with the changing artistic demands of the public. After putting together a bad ass portfolio, which by the way you need to look up as many good artists as you can on Instagram and use them for inspiration, talk to a tattoo artist and ask them what life is like as a tattoo artist. Unless you are extremely talented artistically and get into an amazing shop and I also have amazing social media skills for networking, life as a tattoo artist can be quite difficult and job stability is nonexistent. You have to really be able to be a good business person and be on top of your hustle 24/7. It also takes many years to become skilled with how to tattoo and the instruments you use to do tattoos and it also takes many years to build up a clientele base to support a living. I hope that this puts some things in perspective helps you in whatever decision that you make. I am always around to answer the questions that you may have and I may even make a detailed video.
Kriss M , oh and this last thing is extremely important. The majority of the information on TH-cam is wrong or extremely outdated. There are also a lot of videos that tell you all the wrong ways of tattooing on purpose. In order to be the best apprentice you can, you need to not know anything about how Tattoo's work. You need to be fresh Clay to be molded by your teacher. People lose their apprenticeships or get denied when they think they know a thing or two because it is difficult to teach people who think they already know what's up.
is it ok to ask your artist if you can do the tattoo in sessions?? getting a big piece on my ribs next month and ill probably only be able to sit through the line work lol
Dylan Zona , you can always ask to do sessions. Let the artist know that you would like to do the outline first and see how you feel. It won't be a problem at all. Thanks for watching
I'm getting my first tattoo done in a couple of days on the right side of my upper chest, is that a tender place to get one done in your opinion? What are some ways to keep your mind off the pain? Love the video its really helpful
Hunter Collins, to most people that spot stings pretty bad. As far as the scale of pain goes for spots, this one is low on the list. The best thing to do is try to stay in a good mood and daydream. If you're in a bad mood the tattoo hurt and if you stay in a good mood it will be tolerable. Thanks for watching
I know I'm quite late to the party but yeah. I have several tattoo designs in mind that I want done, however they will all be quite expensive as well as a bit extensive. Do artists tend to frown upon doing a tattoo in stages? For example on my lower back (not quite low enough to be a tramp stamp ugh) I want a black rose that will have thorned vines coming out from each side, on my right the vine will twist to form the word Father and on the left Mother. I was thinking of having it done in three stages; first the rose, then one vine, then the other.
MaLinda Stevens , I definitely wouldn't try to add on to tattoos. You can break it up into stages if you want to do it that way. Do the outline first and then the shading and then the color. Get the entire design drawn out and outlined. But be warned that doing a tattoo in stages can end up being more expensive because the artist has to use a brand-new set up every time they tattoo you and that usually carries a minimum price. So if you were to get outline and shading for $160 for that session, getting the outline would cost $100 and to go back again for the shading could cost another $100. Unless the tattoo is really big or really detailed, it's best to try and get as much done as possible in one session.
Hey guys, really good video. From a tattoo artists perspective, do you think getting a tattoo at 15 is to young? I've been wanting to get a small semi colon tattoo for about a year now, and I have permission from my mum. I have thought about it a lot, and I'm set on getting it. Have a good day/night.
Ÿoutube Åddict, I honestly think that 15 Is Way too young to be getting tattooed. However, I am a big supporter of the semicolon and I know the impact it could make on someone's life. I would definitely say to put it somewhere on your ankle or legs, but if you must put it somewhere visible, make sure that it is something small or able to cover easily. Thanks for watching and leaving a positive comment
Matty Massacre thanks for replying! I'll definitely take your thoughts in to consideration. If I do decide to get it, I'll get it somewhere not very visible. Also I live in NSW Australia, and people under 18 are able to get a tattoo with the permission of the parents. But who knows, we'll see how things turn out. Thank you again!
Jay rockersocks , The arm is extremely low on the pain scale. The pain of the tattoo is not really what you should be worried about, the worst part about getting tattooed is the amount of time you have to sit getting the uncomfortable pain that is a tattoo. Tattoos really don't hurt that bad at all, it just gets irritated and becomes an annoying pain.
Ugly Freedom , because the majority of the arm is extremely easy to take. Also the majority of people asking about the arm are talking about the upper arm.
I plan on getting my first tattoo fairly soon on my inner forearm, and was planning on getting a trumpet, and I wanted to try and get it modeled after the one I currently own, so would it be helpful to the artist to give them some photos of my trumpet for a reference or should just let them do there own thing?
Tankeh100 , definitely take a few pictures with good lighting at the angles in which you would like the design done. Most artists will print out the picture and use that as their stencil. Also give your artist the make and specific model of the instrument so that they can look it up for a reference. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting
Abi Stone , pain is different for everyone, but a lot of my clients have said that the side boob and rib area is a bit more painful than other spots. I have found that the sternum or under boob area has hurt my clients the worst. Tattoo pain can be manageable if you just remember to breathe and stay relaxed. If you want to get something done, don't worry about the pain and get it done.
I really want to get a rib tattoo (first tattoo) but everyone has different opinions on pain:( I'd really appreciate some advice on pain scale and sizing !
Johnson Finley , this is a very good question. It is very uncommon for anyone to use iodine to dilute their ink. Tattoo pigment does not have any iodine at all. Depending on what country you get tattooed, you can ask if they use iodine.
I'm soon planning on getting a tattoo of Slayer, my favorite band. Would a tattoo artist accept it if I brought a picture of their logo in? Sorry if this question sounds stupid, I just want to know. Oh, and I subscribed. :)
Got my first tattoo at 16 under my parents supervision, now here I am at 22 looking up "1st tattoo" advice videos since I wasn't as active in the process and etiquette the first time around 😅
do you regret it?
Victoria Nope, still love it!

Matty Massacre It was way easier than I expected. Barely hurt at all until the white at the end Photos on my Instagram xrtbxmx
I'm getting my first one this coming weekend. I'm so stoked, for about 5 years I have wanted one. Not the time has come, and as it gets closer I get more nervous. Thank you for the work in out question. I was worried about that. I'm les nervous about getting it after watching this.

I love a good refresher on advice, I have 15+ tattoos but love hearing what tattoo artists feel and think
Woah wtf.... I started watching these videos because I'm getting a tattoo this weekend and it actually happens to be at yalls location.
I have been getting tattoos since I was 35 (I am now almost 55) and I found this helpful and interesting. I wish I had this advise when I started.
Ive got a sleeve, inner arm, and full chest all in color but for some reason I find these videos entertaining.
Thanks for sharing guys. I can't wait to get back in the shop.
I was a first timer getting a treble clef tattoo on my upper arm. And now I have 4 total at present and also I have just recently booked in for my 5th towards the end of march.

Not at all. Every piece of reference is helpful. The artist will be able to draw off of your design. Thanks for watching and I'm glad this helped a little. Have fun with your tattoo :)
Thanks for the reply! And okay cool that makes sense :)
Renee DeeVee Nah it would kind of make the tattooist life eaiser, you have what you want, all you have to do is show the design and try get your artisit to agree
Renee DeeVee It's definitely not considered rude. My older sister has a tattoo of a tree that she drew herself
Omg no! Lots of people do that!
super helpful video. it made me less nervous! thanks guys

how many times can you retattoo a tattoo if it fades?
Victoria, depending on the outline weight, tattoos can be gone over a few times in their lifespan. Just chose your artist wisely so you don't have to get a cover up.
I feel much more comfortable about it hearing it from you guys too.
Im supposed to be getting a matching one with my mom on my 18th bday in 3 weeks!!! Im really excited. Thank you for this informative video 💕

Very helpful guys,thx.
nice video. informative 🖒
You're actually in my area. Are there any artist at your shop that do/specialize with neo-traditional tattoos?
Cat Jade, definitely a style that I love doing. We have a few artists that do a lot of that style as well.
Matty Massacre Awesome. I might come by this weekend. Looking to get my first piece soon.
You can check out my instagram by searching Matty Mässäcre.
Out of curiosity what is the normal shop minimum/ deposit?
Hours shop minimum is $60 and a deposit can be $60-$100 depending on the consultation.
Everything was well said here. Thank you

what is your thought on tear drop tattoos?
Anthony Solano , not really a good idea in my personal opinion. People assume gang affiliation or prison time or that you have killed someone. Basically making you a social outcast. Also it is a bit shaky about the origins of what the teardrop means because it has changed a few times over the last 30 years.
Hey getting my first tattoo soon on my chest, any tips?
Eric Merritt , stay relaxed and make sure to breathe. I have a video on my channel of a kid getting his first tattoo on his chest and what his reaction was to it.
Matty Massacre OK thanks man, I'll check it out now
Great video guys.. I'm getting my first tattoo I had bought a 2 hour session and today my partner got me another 2 hour session, I want to get a horror character either Michael myers, freedy or chucky haven't quite decided which one . Would 4 hours be too much for a first tattoo for both the person and artist or would it be grand,
i know coming in drunk isnt allowed, but how do u feel about someone coming in high?
Seeing a lot of tips for people getting their first tattoo but you got any tips for someone wanting to start tattooing?
Kriss M , I can make a video about that, but it may not be exactly what people want to hear. Honestly, think to yourself and look at your artwork like in my good enough for someone to teach me and what makes me so special that they should teach me. You want an amazing art portfolio and you need to hang around a shop for a while earning the shops trust. Some people if not most work for the shop for free for a few years or pay for their apprenticeship. It could be anywhere from $2000-$15,000 to learn how to tattoo
Matty Massacre thank you for replying it means a lot
Is it great to have thigh tattoo for first tattoo?
¡Gracias!
Where are you guys located ?
Kevin Porras, The original Texas body art in Houston Texas
what is the best place for a tattoo
How bad do fingers hurt and is it bad to get a wedding ring tattooed
Unless the tattoo is really big or really detailed, it's best to try and get as much done as possible in one session.
where is your shop located in texas?
jaylen wise , Houston texas
I'm getting my first tattoo on Saturday! Does it hurt bad on the arm what's the pain like for that area?
Jay rockersocks , The arm is extremely low on the pain scale. The pain of the tattoo is not really what you should be worried about, the worst part about getting tattooed is the amount of time you have to sit getting the uncomfortable pain that is a tattoo. Tattoos really don't hurt that bad at all, it just gets irritated and becomes an annoying pain.
Matty Massacre thanks guys so much for that reply!
Where on the arm are you talking about? Seriously, how can you even pretend to answer that question like that...
Ugly Freedom , because the majority of the arm is extremely easy to take. Also the majority of people asking about the arm are talking about the upper arm.
Sweet video thanks guys
What kind of clothes do you suggest to wear when getting a rib tattoo?
Matty did my first tattoo
any advice on getting a tattoo on the thigh as your first tattoo ? which season is best to get it in?
I plan on getting my first tattoo fairly soon on my inner forearm, and was planning on getting a trumpet, and I wanted to try and get it modeled after the one I currently own, so would it be helpful to the artist to give them some photos of my trumpet for a reference or should just let them do there own thing?
Tankeh100 , definitely take a few pictures with good lighting at the angles in which you would like the design done. Most artists will print out the picture and use that as their stencil. Also give your artist the make and specific model of the instrument so that they can look it up for a reference. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting
Is the sideboob/ rib cage area fairly painful or not the worst?
Abi Stone , pain is different for everyone, but a lot of my clients have said that the side boob and rib area is a bit more painful than other spots. I have found that the sternum or under boob area has hurt my clients the worst. Tattoo pain can be manageable if you just remember to breathe and stay relaxed. If you want to get something done, don't worry about the pain and get it done.
Y'all are so cute!!
Would recommend a head tattoo for a first tattoo? How’s the pain rate on the head???
OSSNANOBOT 2212441 , some day it’s not that bad. I have another video tattooing my friends head and he said it was nothing.
I really want to get a rib tattoo (first tattoo) but everyone has different opinions on pain:( I'd really appreciate some advice on pain scale and sizing !
I’m planning on getting my first tattoo on my wrist, a small date and a small hook. Is that a painful area?
Max Mulville , everyone thinks pain differently, but that area is not that painful at all
Is the collarbone very painful? I plan to get my first one there very soon.
Hey, I have an iodine allergy. Is this something I should mention to my artist?
Johnson Finley , this is a very good question. It is very uncommon for anyone to use iodine to dilute their ink. Tattoo pigment does not have any iodine at all. Depending on what country you get tattooed, you can ask if they use iodine.
Is there anything actually effective you know of to help manage the pain? Such as a numbing cream or spray? Or are those a no no?
Hey man thinking about getting my first tattoo here pretty soon but I am wanting it on my side/ribs. Any tips?
How bad is the pain when you are getting a tattoo on your forearm
I'm soon planning on getting a tattoo of Slayer, my favorite band. Would a tattoo artist accept it if I brought a picture of their logo in? Sorry if this question sounds stupid, I just want to know. Oh, and I subscribed. :)
I plan on getting a tattoo these coming weeks near my elbow is there a lot of pain or?
If you get a tattoo on your arm and your job is washing dishes how do you manage. What should you do?
I'm thinking about getting a throat tattoo but not until next year because i want to be sure I want it, on a scale rating how bad?
