How To Get a Cow To Take a Calf

  • We had a second calf heifer that didn't want to let her calf nurse. We don't take no for an answer! It is a very frustrating process but it definitely worth it! It's so much trouble to bottle feed a calf until it's weaned and the Mom's milk is to a lot better for the baby! We have used these techniques with our Brahman herd as well with great success! Hope these tips are helpful!

    The vet said that Calf Claim is for a cow that doesn't want her calf. Orphan-No-More is for a cow that wants a different calf.

      It’s so good to hear someone is actually watching and getting some good out of our videos! It happens sometimes when they’ve had a hard birth and it believe it’s also in the genes somewhere down the line. That’s why we’re not going to keep her. Thank you so much for your feedback!

    6.10 you should have the calfs body along side the cow, at 90% just setting the calf up for a broken leg. Otherwise great job getting the team up and going.

    Wow that was super intense! We just moved to 10 acres and everybody around us has cows and the babies keep getting out and I don't know what to do I'm looking to see if you've made a video on that. My neighbor says they're afraid of people but the cabs are bigger than me I'm only 115 pounds and I am no match for even the babies but I don't want them to get it by somebody coming around the corner and all the hurt is stressed out but they've also got two donkeys and the last time I tried to get out and help the donkey was coming towards the fence with his head snaked in his ears back so I got back in the car luckily the baby remembered how he got out and put himself back in but this other one didn't know how but a girl luckily with her mom and jumped out of the car and shoot him back to the pastor I don't know how to do any of that but I want to help so bad I just don't know enough about house to have any I sure would love to learn everything I could about them

    I am no expert; but, what I have done on a difficult cow and calf is milk the cow and bottle feed the calf. The next day the cow almost ate my son up and he looked at me and stated, "Daddy I think she loves him now."

    Do you have any tips for a young heifer that doesn't have milk? She nurtured her calf, but has no milk, so we're bottle feeding. Is there a trick for getting milk to come in?

    • @doublelcattlefarming
      @doublelcattlefarming  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The most important thing is to make sure the calf keeps nursing all day. The more it nurses…, usually the more milk the heifer will make. Feed bottles as needed .., probably 1/2 a bottle 2 to 3 times a day. In a few days to 2 weeks. The calf should be getting enough milk and not want bottles any more.

      Headgate and oxytocin. You will need to keep the 2 together in a pen. Warm water for washing the tits. That gets her to relax and let down milk

    That baby should have been given colostrum within the first 12 hours of being born, or at least the replacer. Has it?

    • @doublelcattlefarming
      @doublelcattlefarming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well u can’t just ask them nicely “ please don’t kick the starving calf”
      Hitting the cow scares it or aggravates it way more that it hurts it. We are not trying to hurt it just teach it.
      It doesn’t take but a few licks for them to learn.
      If we don’t do this the cow will kick and hurt the baby.

      It makes us sad too. We make about 50 percent more on bulls than beef steers. So it hurts our income. We treat our animals very good. But food is their purpose on this planet.

      @@doublelcattlefarming With that kind of margin why wouldn't you have all of them bulls rather than beef? There's plenty of other farmers making beef. If it upsets you you don't *need* to do it unless there's another reason

    What in the wold are you doing hitting that heifer with a wooden stick! That is totally unacceptable and unnecessary. I grew up on a farm with cattle, and we would never have popped a cow like that.
