  • I have enjoyed making all 147 videos But It's time for me to hang it up. I hope that a few of my uploads were helpful or at least entertaining. This video demonstrates some of the problems associated with making lumber from logs and encourages everyone to save a bundle of $ before opening a saw saw mill operation.....

John, I first ran into you when searching on how to make a chain saw mill. The one I made like yours I have used over and over. I have used your various other videos for other projects. I think I speak for at least many hundreds of others in saying thanks for all your efforts and all you have done to educate and inspire all of us. Many thanks John, best wishes and good luck in all your endeavors.

Dear John, This is the first time I had the opportunity to watch your video. It gave me a great pleasure to witness your ingenuity. Take my hat off to you. It also make me sad to see your comment about that you are stopping the videos. Well, take great care and have a lovely retirement. God bless you Sir.

this is brilliant. it doesnt have to be out of desparation.. its perfect for someone like me who wants to build small projects from logs i have milled myself. much more rewarding to see a piece you've made out of a tree vs pre-milled boards from a lumber yard! if you just want to build a rocking chair or jewelry box its not practical to buy a $30000 mill so this is just great!

Thank's for the generous response... I thought I had run out of ideas. My house is on the North slope of Pine Hill and I am surrounded with hundreds of trees. However there is one place that gets plenty of sun so I decided to build a fire wood sun dryer on that spot. Hey wood is a renewable resource.

John Canivan Very interesting, you could make a short video from time to time, it doesn't have to be perfect! Inspired by your videos, I will try to build a solar air heater to keep a summer cabin dry (sometime...). We have a lot of sun during the summer in Finland (not so much during winter, heh). Many thanks for sharing your insights and inspiration! Cheers!

Chainsaws do NOT have a blade! They have a bar and chain. The chain, not the "blade" is what is sharp or dull.

Not bad but I think You are better off with the Chinese knockoff of the Haddon lumbermaker. The one that bolts on a saw. They are like $20. on Amazon. You dont have to lift the log . Your base is kinda rickety. If you can only afford $15 for your Equiptment you wont have a tractor to lift a log with.

There 4 eye bolts and each bolt is 3.36 + tax that $15. just for the eye bolts. the wood is 3.64 for an 8' 2x4 and looks like we need at least 2 of them. This rig is now going to cost you $25. Inflation is eating us up!

On the rip chain vs a regular, I've used both a fair bit (see channel) and I don't think you're missing much. Way more important that it is sharp, as you said. Ok thanks for sharing. Peace, Bongo.

well man, not trying to knock the design at all. but i must point out a serious risk here. and yes, i do have a degree in engineering. this idea in general is a great idea. but... the most burdened point on the device is where the saw is mounted. any and all pressure and/or kickbacks are gonna focus into that point. and the bolts are plenty strong enough. but the few cubic inches of board is a tragedy waiting to happen. i'd recommend adding a steel plate across the top and bottom of the board.
one more simple add on to ensure safe operation, would be to add a row of nails protruding through the board along the side of the log opposite of the clamps. just a small protrusion will ensure excellent gripping and prevent any slippage that could occur when dealing with uncut timbers.
hope my advice helps ya brother :)

They did remodels on houses the average working stiff could afford Nowadays they are for rich yuppies who end up paying $500,000 and up. For a remodel.

Informative and easy to replicate, but DUDE, that was painful to watch..
Please, rehearse your videos, write a script even, talk a bit faster, edit your vids a bit more, (we know how to turn a bolt, don't need to see you do it for 30 seconds or perhaps add a T-bar to the screw eye to speed up the turns), and clamp that rig to your tressels before you hurt yourself..! Geez..
