I am a huge fan of studio versions because you get to hear the song as the artist intended. Engineering is very underrated in my opinion. ❤️ The channel!

I just counted and I have 40 Tom Petty songs on my playlist. One of the all time Greats. Some of my favorite songs in no particular order: Breakdown, American Girl, You Wreck Me, Running Down a Dream, Wildflowers, I Won't Back Down, You Don't Know How It Feels, Mary Jane's Last Dance, The Waiting, Learning To Fly and so many more.

My first concert, 1981. Was his biggest fan as soon as this album came out. Dig into more if his first three albums, all great. The Wild One, Forever is a hidden gem from the first.

His duet with Stevie Nicks - Stop Draggin' My Heart Around - and almost every song from his 1st solo album Full Moon Fever, especially Runnin' Down a Dream, are musts! But THIS is the quintessential Heartbreakers song.

I have loved Tom Petty since I was a teenager. My husband and I flew our son in from Barcelona to see him on his farewell tour. We were 8 rows back from the stage, amazing. This was the one song my son wanted him to sing but he never did. Regardless, it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, he sounded amazing. R.I.P.

I have been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for many years and I remember when this song came out and I played the heck out of it. This song never gets old to me. I knew you would love this because their sound is huge on drums and keyboards. I think you would also like “Don’t do me Like That”.

Yes, these are great ones, but he did Breakdown already a few days ago. Chod, I mentioned then and will repeat that you really should hear the Breakdown studio version, that live one was really lacking! (I know, he's usually great live too!). Also, "The Waiting".

Tom Petty was a great singer. He was great and the Heartbreakers were a great band. Saw him twice once with the Heartbreakers and then on a solo tour. He was great both times. R.I.P. Tom!

I saw Tom Petty in 2001 in Corvallis Oregon. (shought out OSU). Not a single person was smoking a joint. Second song was Mary Janes Last Dance, by the 3rd note, everyone in the place had one going. The Wallflowers opened. Never heard of them. I was floored when they did One Headlight. Later found out that is Bob Dylan's son Jakobs band. Had no idea. Most unexpectedly great show I ever saw.

Came here from Justin's channel where he explained your situation with Studio Hamburg. I suggest that you contact Fil who has the Wings of Pegasus channel because he went through the same problem with Studio Hamburg and they were resolved successfully. Fil's a good guy. I'm sure he'd be willing to advise you. Best of luck 👍

Back in my radio DJ days, this was an album that you could play any cut on the record and be fine -- every track is outstanding. The comparison to Dylan -- the Heartbreakers have been the backup band for Bob Dylan and also for Johnny Cash - those are some top flight credentials for a backup band!

  • @LesSmith45

In 1979 there were many many great albums that were released that ever single song on the album was great. This is one of those albums. If you are into collecting albums. This one is a MUST for your collection. I can name about 20 albums that came out in 1979 that are must own. Two of the biggest ones is AC/DC Highway to Hell and Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Check out Mudcrutch, Tom Petty's original band before the Heartbreakers and reformed in the mid 2000's. They do a live version of the Byrd's Lover of the Bayou. Tom and the band are in fine form. Mike Campbell is on fire.

So many great tracks off this amazing album and his catalog runs deep. Even The Losers ,Louisiana Rain or Here Comes My Girl are from the Damn The Torpedoes album. Petty also sang with Dylan in The Traveling Wilburys. You might want to give that supergroup another go as well.

Back when this album came out I had the album cover at my work holding ( as a Department lead) all the jobs and parts needed and time to completions. It was my "Petty records holder". A pun I only held to myself. My last Name is Petty but no relations. It might have got me better seats to the 6 concerts I've been to here in the SF bay area. My secret favorite is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ~ Baby's A Rock 'n' Roller.

When I first discovered Tom Petty I was cool to the group until they delivered Refugee and Breakdown at which point point I realized what a glorous tight, tight band they are. The deal was sealed at that point and I've never ventured far away since. With my appreciation growing even greater with every new offering gleaned particularly via live performances.

It was all in the egg shaker that gave the drive. Tom once said in an interview the songs were dragging on this album. But someone had the btight idea to add a shaker to everything in the background and it boosted it right up. I believe it was Jim Gordon.

I am always happier with the studio version with the exceptions of hits recorded live such as Paul McCartney & Wings/Maybe I'm Amazed and Peter Frampton/Do You Feel Like We Do as two examples. Studio versions rule! Very often, live versions are a step down from the perfection of the studio version. Example : Roberta Flack/Killing Me Softly With His Song Live is the worst version of a live performance I've ever heard and is an insult to the original studio version, which was #1 for five weeks on the singles chart. I get a sick feeling in my stomach when a reactor picks a live version to hear for the first time hearing of the song and take it as a personal insult.
