Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys

- Another set of scenes from the movie Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys. In these scenes, we see how the manager of the Beach Boys , Murry Wilson, who is also the father of Carl, Dennis, and Brian Wilson, insults and degrades the eldest son Brian. The verbal harassment that Brian endured from his father, forced him to move out of the house, and later fire his father during an altercation in the music studio in 1965. Murry Wilson dies in 1973, with neither Brian or Dennis attending the funeral. The abuse that Dennis and Brian Wilson endured during their years of popularity, is said by some to have been one of the catalysts for Brian's mental breakdown and substance abuse later in his career, as well as Dennis' alcohol abuse.
The actor that played Murry in this movie should have won an Emmy.
What I found so appalling is that after all their success they wanted to earn off the royalties. When they informed their father of this news - he replies oh you can't because I sold the rights to it and bought a house. The Beach Boys reply was how did this happened and Murray says oh do you recall that little piece paper I had you sign. Couldn't believe Murray when the producer says you have a genius on your says and he starts to criticize him infront of the other members of the band.
Caroline Wilson
Murray actually forged Brian's signature.
Kevin Dunn was better in "An American Family."
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy yes he did I grew up watch the beach boys an American family
This one, despite its flaws, is better than American Family. I thought Greg Keane was great as Brian. The two Murry Wilsons were both great.
Barbara Ann was recorded in one take (?) in a party session with Dean Torrance and after Murry had been fired.
"Let's get actors who look and sound nothing like The Beach Boys to play The Beach Boys!"
Okay but Mike is pretty damn close
just one thing...DENNIS WILSON NEED TO BE REPRESENTED BETTER!!! .
Dennis was the most rambunctious and rebellious of the Wilson boys. Unfortunately in abusive families, that's the child that gets the worst of the abuse.
I didn't like way Dennis Wilson always put down it's the same with Jim Morrision of the Doors. People tried to put him down too. But Musicians were no fools. It didn't mention in this T.V. movie when Dennis Wilson first Band member to make a Superb Underrated Solo album Pacific Ocean blue. He was no fool.
No wonder Brian got stressed having a control-freak dad like that!
This makes "An American Family" look like Citizen Kane.
Dennis is portrayed too much a stereotype of a California dude, tanned, scraggly haired, surfs, talks back to his father.
Also, does anyone see the similarities between Murray and Joseph Jackson, I always thought there was!
I tend to agree with 'the some' .. that crap from Murry would be enough to drive anyone to the wall .. thank god that Brian managed to pull thru his personal hell. A great pity that poor Dennis wasn't able to beat his demons ...
I kinda don’t like when people call them “demons”, when a lot of it was clearly just his *dad*, not some unseen force.
i love dennis.. he was the REAL beach boy.
I've never seen this, but if they're doing I Get Around, it's early 1964. Barbara Ann was not only late 1965 but it was on the Party album so there should be a big crowd of friends there including Dean Torrence should be there. Murry was long gone before Barbara Ann. If they can't even get the songs right, I doubt it's accuracy. But they did seem to get Murry right.
"No! Not until he changes the way he sings that line! It's too loud!"
Good lord.
...." it's supposed to be that way"
he rivals michael jackson's dad as the most sinister guy in the music biz
exactly good point, I felt the exact same way , maybe a different color outside but the same person on the inside
Do not forget the Dad from the Cowstills💰💰💰💰
he's funnier than joe jackson :P
Dont forget the Colonel.
Murray Wilson, Joe Jackson, and Bud Cowsill were the same sides of the same coin. All 3 never loved their children for them.., they only loved what their children could do for them in terms of fame.. money.. and.. success. So all 3 Dads took all their personal internal issues, their anger, frustration, and jealousy out on their own children because their children had a life they never had and their children were doing things they never did.
When he dropped dead of a heart attack back in 1973 which was the year I graduated from high school it was of no great loss to the world as far as I'm concerned.
I hope the whole movie gets put back up. I really enjoyed it.
thanks, e r n i e
its been reloaded catch it quickly b4 youtube takes it down
5:04 watch out murray might turn green and become the hulk lol
The nightmare father from hell.
Too bad they didn't live on Elm street next to Jason Voorhees.
This is hilarious! The level of truth is at least 1 per cent.
Barbra Ann was actually written in one take with mistakes and overdubbed with party sound effects at the Beach Boys Party! and Murry wasn't even there when they recorded Barbra Ann. Dean Torrence from Jan and Dean sang on Barbra Ann. Jan Berry didn't.
I remember being a few blocks from the Capitol Records building when I was 8 years old.
I listened to the Beach boys on a transistor radio ( with batteries)
I became a musician 3 years later
I Agree Mike And Brian Did Right Thing So Proud .
I think Murry Wilson had a jealous resentment of his son's talent, compared to his own so-so career. It's obvious in this scene.
I would see something similar with Michael Jacksons father, the only difference, the color of their skin
It's real obvious. Especially when that recording engineer raves about how good a singer Brian is.
i'm so glad i got this for my birthday today on dvd now i no longer have to watch clips on youtube i cant watch it on dvd from start to finish
The guy who played Murray was also great in Heartbreak Ridge.
Someone also wrote Shawshank Redemption.
Is it me, or during the ever-so-accurately-reproduced "Barbara Ann" session does Al Jardine look like he's on Star Trek and is about to die?
That's right. Basically, Brian didn't tour with the group after '64, but stayed home writing songs and working on the albums. Glen Campbell and later Bruce Johnston filled in for Brian on tour beginning in '65.
the guy who played murray in this movie, is he the same guy who played warden norton in the shawshank redemption?
It's the only beach boys where they got Mike Love's hair due right he was kinda bald
I just love the Beach Boys, I grew up listen to them.
me too don't worry baby and little deuce coupe and surfin safari and sail on sailor and catch a wave are my top 5 favorite be a h boys songs
The guy playing Dennis would go on to play Captain Christopher Pike in the new Star Trek films. Bruce Green Greenwood was about the only decent thing in this movie!
I thought Greg Keane as Brian was great. The guy playing Mike needed to lose some weight. Bruce Greenwood was not that good, in my opinion.
Wow, recording Surfin Safari and already Brian was considered better than Coltrane according to Mr. Engineer.
Brian said this film was mostly inaccurate; in poor taste, and 'stunk'.
Yeah the movie really sucked the guy playing Dennis Wilson the drummer Kind a looks like Al Jardine. In one of the films they didn’t even mention David marks which I don’t really understand. And in the scene where the mom and dad go out of town and the Beach boys rent A bunch of musical instruments they have Vox amplifiers. It was supposed to be a 1962 those amplifiers to not come to America until 1965 the whole me the whole movie basically sucked
No that was the miniseries The Beach Boys: An American Family.
"Love and Mercy," "An American Family," and "Summer Dreams." The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. They should make an honest mini-series. No other band in pop music has a more interesting story (when told accurately).
"Love and Mercy" is gross and reeeally inaccurate in a lot of places.
TO BE HONEST, An American Family is a million times better than Love and Mercy.. It focuses on the whole career and success of the Beach Boys, not just Brian's mental and drug issues..... It is the best Beach Boys biopic we have to date!
@@richieluckenbill1590 “Love and Mercy” definitely isn’t a perfect movie and it’s really Brian’s story, but “An American Family” is carried by Kevin Dunn, and it also leaves a lot out of the story and is really Mike Love’s perspective in terms of the band-members. I don’t hate Mike Love like most people but I still believe a much better series could be made. It would probably have to be longer than two episodes though.
@@T.Ramby11 I wouldn't say it's based on Mike Love... It's actually more about Brian's life and how controlling and physically/mentally abusive their dad was. Love and Mercy about gave me a headache while watching it in the theater Lol John Cusack as Brian Wilson.....? I mean, come on. Lol It focused on the personal and negative aspects of Brian's life, things that are not worth making a movie about. I was extremely disappointed. Beach Boys: An American Family focuses on Brian, the musical genius and his importance to the success of the Beach Boys!!!
@@richieluckenbill1590 I’d agree that the 1980s scenes with John Cusack aren’t all that great and that the 1960s scenes with Paul Dano are absolutely the highlights but I wouldn’t say the Landy storyline isn’t worth telling.
As far as American Family goes, I believe Mike Love was the band-member who had the most input and I think he was even an executive producer. I mean we all know Mike Love wasn’t a real surfer, but more importantly, American Family seems to imply the highest moments of the band were their early days with Capitol, putting together the Endless Summer compilation, and when the Beach Boys had major success as a touring band in the 1970s at the end of the movie. I love those moments, but I would have liked to see more of Brian Wilson in the studio during the mid-60s when he recorded The Beach Boys Today! and Pet Sounds. It also seems to suggest the Smile-era and his collaboration with Van Dyke Parks was mainly just one big drug-induced haze.
I also don’t think it does Dennis Wilson a lot of justice. Dennis was a better drummer and singer than he gets credit for, especially for someone who had no training. Not only that, he was definitely the best songwriter in the group after Brian. He wrote a lot more than just Forever. It doesn’t do Carl Wilson a lot of justice either, who helped to keep the band afloat while Brian was struggling. I definitely get your points though, I just think a much better movie or mini-series could be made.
Yeah, "Mike Love" is pretty close! In fairness, the real Mike looked a bit more mature due to his early baldness, kinda like their uncle ;P
I'd watch this movie anyway, even if it gets the facts wrong. It's curious.
If you want worse biopic about a band from this period, I would reccomend "Daydream Believers: The Monkees Story"
Lol! I was just watching Family and you're absolutely right! Except this version of Murray is much creepier but I love Kevin Dunn.
"I got the Burgers, I got the Fries, I got the COKE!!!" - 'Summer Dreams'

When Michael died, an article was written about how Murry and Joseph were very much the same and how Brian and Michael's upbringing were very similar!
I need to see this one. I have seen An American Band a few times I DVR it when it comes on VH1. They use the real music. This one has cover music.
2:43 Oh for Christ's sake. Here, they're posing for a photo in 1962. Despite what the "Mike" character said, Dennis DID play drums on the Beach Boys records; Hal Blaine didn't really start to drum on most of the Beach Boys' records until like 1965-ish, and even then, on some tracks, the boys (including Dennis) still played the instruments. Hell, on 'That's Not Me' from the Pet Sounds album, which is pretty heavy with Wrecking Crew musicians, that track is played instrumentally by Brian on organ, Carl on guitar and Dennis on drums.
It wasn't until 1964 that Brian starting using the Wrecking Crew (in which Hal would always be the drummer for Brian's songs).
I'm very familiar with the Wrecking Crew. Did all of the Beach boys play on the albums before 64?
Pet sounds lp ..maybe?
Uh....what instrument did Mike Love ever play....
@@georgepenton808 A little sax.
The actor deserved an Emmy but the real father DID NOT deserve Father of the Year by a long shot.
@spacepatrolman They recorded it with a lot of other people in the studio. Some of the party atmosphere was faked, but any real fan would know that there were other session musicians present for the recording of Party. Even the rehearsals were more of a party than this. The point is, this movie sucks in every way imaginable.
Al and carl’s guitars are mixed up
Although I have never met the guy personally Dennis seemed like he would have been a nice guy to hang out with. REST IN PEACE, DENNY.
I think An American Family was better, but it too was inaccurate to the beach boys story. what I did like about summer dreams was that instead of them ending with Brian still being ill, they ended on a more triumphant note. Minus Dennis of course.
Carl's skinny, Brian's...nothing like Brian, and Dennis looks like he has fetal alcohol syndrome
John Stamos thinks it probably all happened this way, doesn't he?
What's better, Summer dreams or an American family as far as films of the band go?
Does anyone know the name and or artist of the song that is playing in the bar when Denis picks up that girl and she throws the drink in his face? It kinda sounds like a Jimmy Buffet tune? but not sure.
Brian had NOTHING TO DO with Manson.
Yeah--that's a good way to ensure talent and creativity. Just yell and scream at them. And if that doesn't work, whack 'em on the side of the head with a 2 x 4.
wow he's worse than my dad
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
Dennis loved and adored Brian, and he never made fun of him! This is deeply disturbing that they made a "movie" out of so much lies! It's completely inaccurate! Dennis didn't talk or act that way. "Barbara Ann" wasn't recorded like that! It was live, and had Dean Torrence from Jan&Dean helping out on vocals. Brian didn't act or talk like that and didn't fire Murry because he shook his head. Don't believe this nonsense. And the acting is horrible and they look/sound NOTHING like the Beach Boys!
I agree. Dennis was a bit wild, but in a lovable way. His heart was big
Yeah that engineer sure is Chuck Britz. *rolls eyes*
We lived only 3 blocks from the Wilson family when we lived in Inglewood. My babysitter knew them personally.
Been looking for a copy of this movie for a while. Does anyone know if its available on DVD or on the net somewhere? Please inbox me!
No that was a miniseries which came out in 2000!
you can get it on amazon, thats where i'm getting it for my birthday
wait a min! wat beach boy mini series? wat was it called!
How about this: a movie with Donald Trump as Murry, Barrack Obama as Brian, and Bill Clinton as Dennis!
And here I thought Barabara Ann was from the Party Album. Guess it was really from some studio album after all.
I think you have Brian mixed up with someone else. Not only did Brian sing on pretty much every Beach Boys hit but he wrote most of them too! Lol Brian was pretty much the driving force of The Beach Boys.
Perhaps you're thinking of Al Jardine who was only on Surfin and then left the group. However he returned later on I think on their 5th album.
who the hell wrote the script?
I never saw this version of The Beach Boys' story on television. Fine performance by that actor as Muarry Wilson. Playing the dear old dad of the Wilsons and Mike Love as a bully and a prick they were stuck with as their producer.
Their dad was a complete asshole.
The only prick around here is you, lurvy.
you can get it on amazon i'm getting it from there for my birthday
:-) THANKS For This!!
5:04 that face could make a good TH-camPoop clip or animated gif
I think this is the VH1 version there was another version done by NBC or CBS Im not sure thats alot better, it showed Dennis Wilson torching his corvette on the Beach..Epic
Dennis had every right to do what he did. I wouldn't put up with that shit
This movie is a scam, but it's entertaining.
Skews me what happened to David marks he was a member of the Beach boys from 1962 until 1963 he’s not even mentioned in this movie. The real Brian Wilson said this movie was a piece of garbage and I have to agree with him
The dad fired him.
I didnt realise Mike Love was 40 years old in 1964.
Didn’t he always look old for his age?
@@joewhitehead3But he was too heavy here.
well? Wheres the rest of it??
and didn't Jan and Dean sing on BA?
Wonder if any of those buttons still exist. And how much they'd be worth now.
I know this movie was considered terrible, but I always like it.
1:10 whats warden norton from shawshank redemption doing in there?
Their father is Warden Norton, no wonder they went through hell!
Maybe R Lee Emery would of been better. L🤣😂L.
Was this the tv movie produced by Mike Love and John Stamos?
nobody posted the whole movie on youtube yet?
Wait so you're trying to say that Brian didn't sing on any albums after 64? That's just entirely inaccurate. I'm just about positive Brian sang on every record and 99% of the songs. Brian was known to have a session bassist that would do recording and around 65 he stopped touring all together but Brian definately sang on the albums. On "Caroline No" he was the only person to sing on the track.
This movie is so bad and inaccurate.
How so? How old are you?
Chad Roberts Accuracy wise, they should be singing Help me Rhonda, which was recorded a year after Get Around; the demo tapes captured the dismissal of Murray, who was a sloshing drunk by that time, and the boys were MEN, not the whiny crybaby's portrayed here...loving the BB's knows no age. ''I'm a genius too.''
ZenZill Did you grow up in the 60's?
Chad Roberts I bet I was shakin', rattlin', and rollin' before you were in diapers kiddo.
ZenZill Actually, by the time of that famous Murry & Brian argument during the 'Help Me Rhonda' vocal session in 1965, Murry was no longer their manager, having been dismissed back in April 1964.
GENIOS LOS BEACH ¡¡¡
Wendy Kaplan from H5 6:00
poor brian!
this is so funny
Bruce Greenwood ❤
This doesn't look that bad except for the poor physical resemblance between the actors and the real people.
this isn't a good movie about the beach boys. American Family is better
Yeah, it just seemed weird that this movie seemed to focus on Dennis the most... and also featured songs that weren't theirs. While "American Family" is indeed better, it still gives short shrift to the group's post- _Pet Sounds_ music and treats _Smile_ like a joke.
not entirely accurate but murry WAS a DOOSH!
So good to get rid of Murray cheers let's get going and do what we want to do
Ya, I know their story to. I wasn't ruling them out.
What was Murray’s problem anyway?
Brian Wilson should fired Murray in the first place. Beach Boys do better without Murray, Dennis knows Brian how he sings his music
I Really wanna find this movie
It is a shame that abuse amongst males is still largely ignored. They make all kinds of documentaries about women and there problems, yet this is the only thing I have seen about an abusive father towards his sons. Males are more likely to be abused then women, but it is seldomly reported or taken seriously in males, and women wonder why we keep our feelings to outselves, sometimes it takes seeing the ugliness to prove a point, while I know it is a movie, I am sure it wasn't all made up.
I would never work with my Dad
@spacepatrolman I agree. I didn't say it was inaccurate in every way imaginable, I said it SUCKS in every way imaginable.
can't find this great movie online...had it on tape long ago...help,anyone!?!?!?
Ask Rhonda!
This is so goddamned awful, I can't stop watching it. It's like studying a crime scene.
...that old man is supposed to be the manager and not a song or voice critic... instead of marketing the band, he is stupid enough to sit around and act as a voice coach...
Which movie was more accurate about the life of the Beach Boys?
Love and Mercy was the most accurate, Summer Dreams #2, American Family a distant third.
