Key point for a great mileage is higher the gear, lesser the RPM better the mileage. At 100kmph if RPM is at 1500rpm you can fetch really great mileage.
Also if you have noticed most of the diesel cars have max 6000RPM while petrol needs 8000RPM. so cruising at 100kmph at top gear, since diesel requires lesser RPM than petrol fetches better mileage.
So even a GLS 400d with 2500kg of weight, with a big 3L 6 cylinder diesel engine with 700nm of torque can fetch 11-12kmpl easily at 100kph because it has freaking 9 gears and at 9th gear at 100RPM is as low as 1200-1300RPM.
