    Wet and wash oak & cherry pallet boards, that smoke will take so much flavor into those boards and meat.

    Nice work. So well thought out. Thanks for showing the placement of your temp probe just below the top grate. Also thanks for explainig the lower adjustable vent to modulate the air flow if need be. I will use this info for the pellet fed Ugly Drum Smoker I am building.

    some commercial fridges are all stainless steel inside and out and would also make great smokers with huge capacity with already built in racks.

    What about using a regular kitchen oven with smoking chips/pellets in the bottom? I have an old one that I want try it with. The top part of the stove is no good, so I'm thinking of drilling a couple small holes in the top and use it as an electric smoker. The oven has a heating element in the top & bottom. If put a metal tray with chips/pellets directly onto the bottom element that would create the smoke and top element would do most of the cooking. 🤔

    what did you do to cut the square hole for pellet auger, noticed you also taped it to seal the gap, did you use a jig saw or Sawzall did you cut both at once or individually.
    I just got my 1950 fridge, replaced bottom pan (rust) new insulation going in this weekend and ready to start drilling and ordering pellet hopper from you.
    Thanks

    will the insulation around the fridge hold up to the heat?

    • @DennisCorrea
      @DennisCorrea  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best fridge to use is a old one from around the 50s also make sure it is metal lined. If the insulation is made from fiber glass that is the best. If you are not sure if the insulation will hold up I would put a piece of it in a 400 degree oven and watch and see what it dose. If it melts you should not use it. I know you do not BBQ at 400 degrees but to be safe that's what I recommend.

    • @Hellraiser4268

    It appears that the original fridge racks were chromed and not stainless. Am I wrong, and/or is it ok to use the chromed racks bring the operating temps are fairly low. I know you can't cook over open flame on a chromed rack. Asking to be sure I understand correctly. Thanks and a great build!

    What thickness of gasket did you use? I converted an old refrigerator almost exactly like this one but I still need some heat gasket for the door. As of right now, I have almost a 3/4" gap that needs to be sealed. Did you have to adjust the door on the hinges at all to make it close more? At the very least, I thought about doing what you did by putting it on the door and the fridge itself to create that seal. I was thinking about going with a 1/2" thick rope gasket. Any recommendations? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    • @DennisCorrea
      @DennisCorrea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could try putting a 1/4" shim under the gasket to bring it out a little. I kinda like having a little gap to help with the air flow and temperature maintenance some of these refrigerator build are to well insulated and need the extra air flow. if anyone has any questions and would like to call me call 847-336-1329 and I would be happy to help you. • @DennisCorrea
      @DennisCorrea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always check your brand of refrigerator for any undesirable insulation. Also check for material that may gas off at high temps like foam or plastic. As the bulider you will have to make that decision for your particular applacation.

    Why would cold smoking be bad with the fridge running... being able to smoke for a day or two?

    • @DennisCorrea
      @DennisCorrea  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding of cold smoking is. When cold smoking you want to have good air flow and you want to keep the moisture very low. In a cold sealed fridge you would have high moisture and no air flow.
      I hope this helps.

    The drip edge that you used around the edges where you replaced the plastic pieces...was it galvanized? Seems about all I can find at Home Depot or Lowes is galvanized and I didn't figure galvanized was a great choice for the smoker. Maybe it doesn't get hot enough. Just curious. I can't seem to find anything except galvanized.

    • @DennisCorrea
      @DennisCorrea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used aluminum flashing and aluminium siding comers.to cover any openings I also used some aluminium tape. I don't think you will be getting it hot enough to be a problem.

      As long as the insulation is not a foam type or anything that is flammable, you can use the insulation that the refrigerator originally came with. In this case, it's fiberglass insulation which is not flammable and is safe to use with these custom smoker builds.
