  • Cold smoker with an old refrigerator.
    My good friend Mark taught me how to cold smoke cheese. I couldn't believe how easy is was.
    You can smoke in almost any thing, So I used my grill and it was awesome. But because I live in Oklahoma and the last couple of winters have been warmer than usual, Sometimes seeing 80* I was limited on when I could smoke.
    When the smoker tube is smoking it gets warm and heats up the area and if your not carful, will melt your cheese.
    I wrestled around with several ideas with using a refrigerator, So it started my search for a candidate with out spending to much money.
    My good friends ode and Diane gave me there old refrigerator and so the project started.
    With lots of ideas in my head the project was a go. I hope you enjoy the video.

    Man what a cool idea to use a working fridge to cold smoke, I've seen a bunch of hot smomers out of old fridges but this is a great idea.

      Thanks, I originally thought about putting a hot box inside. But then I started watching people build smoker boxes out side and run a stove pipe to them for hot smoking, and it got me thinking.

    I have a wood chip cold smoke generator. Was about to adapt it to fit my propane smoker to be able to cold smoke cheese and tuna. Ever can fresh tuna at home? Cold smoke it before you can it and you will be amazed at the flavor😮. Anyway here I am looking up refrigerator ideas. I wasn’t thinking of using a working refrigerator. But now I’m intrigued…..
    FYI, making this comment before I saw what smoke your using… but pellets are ok, bomb digidy cold smoke is from real wood chips. Sometimes I mix those flavors and add a few wood pellets to my propane smoker wood chips….. because I’m a mad scientist like that🙂🙃
    Masterbuilt slow smoker is electric and runs on chips

      like the sound of the tuna, frig already broke and haven't smoked for a while, thanks for ideas. its nice to have a mad scientist in my back pocket.

    I was thinking of adapting a mini fridge for cold smoking. That way, I don't have to worry about meats being in danger zone temps for extended periods if i didn’t plan to cure them. I also thought, instead of cutting hole to funnel smoke in, why not just put smoke tubes or sawdust trays in the refrigerator? You can add a fan in the bottom like a DIY dry aging cabinet if you need a little air flow. You would only need a hole in the top to let the smoke out.

    Awesome video greatly appreciate it got into smoking meat about a year ago and now wanna try doing cold smoked salmon but here in phx az gets to hot for a wooden cold smoker thank you for the idea!

    Could've made a curing chamber if you had an old fridge. A cold smoke house can be made from wood scraps

    Are you still using this after a couple of year? for the hole at the top, Id find some piping, even pvcc to fit tthat hole and slide the pipe down to around 4inches off the bottom of the fridge.. And add shelving too.. anyways, with the pipe going to the bottom, you'd retain more cool temp for less cost.. and get a better smoke distribution inside as it would fill with smoke completely, and vent from the pressure of the firdge cooling.. :) Nice work..

    Make cold smoked salmon for lox and cold smoked haddock. Use oak. 👌👌

    chimney should have been opposite side of the smoke inlet.

    hello thank you for this video. im thinking to build simething simmilar..please i have a question. in my country is very hot here and i want to cold smoke sime cheasse ans sausage and salami and much more..i read thet the idieal temp for it is 40-55 f (7-15 celsius) a bit under is olso good. now to my questions.
    1.is the smoke not hurt the fridge compresor? i meen its nit choke the fridge engien and the fridge stop working?
    2. what is the tempeture inside the fridge u succsed to get while smoking?

      It's probably not good for it because my refrigerator broke 😕 I'm trying something new. I'll do another video in future to show my idea

    Not sure if this a silly question or not. But is the fridge turned on and running, or is just used as a cabinet to contain the smoke?

      Yes the fridge is on to keep cheese from melting from heat from smoke. usually you can only smoke cheese in winter.

    I have a non working fridge. I'm getting ready to try to smoke my bacon that is curing right now. It's pretty cold outside. Wondering if it would be safe to use. Hoping the ventilation hole will let the cold in

      I tried to do that with cheese but the insulation makes the heat build-up. You need many holes because it tried to melt my cheese.

    Is it safe to leave the plastic inside the fridge, I would be afraid of it contaminating the meat. Where is that smoker tube from.

      smoker tube from amazon. and the fridge is cold and smoke is not hot. should not affect it.

      I tried to keep it around 60* , it went down to 40* once. It worked good for quite a while before it died. It was a old fridge. Thanks for watching
